YOU’RE INVITED TO APPLY: The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Library are announcing a recruitment for a Library Desk Supervisor to oversee the operation of the Novato branch’s circulation desk. The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future vacancies that may occur in this and other library branches. Eligible lists remain active for a minimum of six (6) months.

TENTATIVE EXAM SCHEDULE: Depending on the number of qualified candidates, a supplemental application screening, oral examination, or combination may be used to determine which candidates’ names will be placed on the eligible list.

ORAL EXAMINATION: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2010
(Tentative Hiring Interview Date by Library Department: Thursday, February 25, 2010)

DUTIES: Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
• Supervises and assists assigned staff in performing various library activities involved in operating the circulation desk services.
• Uses computer system to charge and discharge library materials, register patrons, process reserves and interlibrary loan requests, collect fines and fees.
• Hires, trains, instructs, schedules, reviews and evaluates the work of subordinate personnel.
• Organizes the workload of circulation services.
• Explains library circulation policies and services to the public; resolves complex patron issues.
• Participates in branch supervisory team.
• Attends standing committees and meetings as required.
• Oversees the collection of moneys and deposits in bank.
• Keeps various library records and statistics.
• Prepares reports as required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Equivalent to four years of progressively responsible library technical support experience including one year of lead or supervisory experience OR eighteen (18) semester units of college coursework in Library Technology AND two years of library experience including one year of lead or supervisory experience. Public library experience is preferred.

Knowledge of: Basic library tools, methods and procedures; library circulation policies and procedures which serve the community; customer relations techniques; methods of indexing and filing; basic supervisory techniques and practices; library computer applications and other standard computer applications, including word processing.

Skill in: Organizing work assignments; recognizing priorities; scheduling staff; establishing and maintaining tactful oral communications; promoting library programs and meeting the needs of library patrons; using basic library tools and equipment; collecting, searching, processing and interpreting library data; performing detailed tasks with accuracy; maintaining accurate financial records; interpreting and applying rules and standards; training subordinates; using library automation and standard computers; reading and working with bibliographic records; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of employment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Will be required to work evenings and weekends.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE: Bilingual Spanish skills.
