The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill three Librarian II (Selective Certification - Children's Services) vacancies in the Oakland Public Library.
General Position:Under general direction, incumbents perform a variety of professional duties in the operation of City of Oakland library services, including specialized and general reference, readers advisory, material selection and program planning; and to provide lead direction to assigned staff.


Selective Certification:

The current vacancy is located in the Oakland Public Library. The position is responsible for providing children's services; library research and orientation classes; reader's advisory; manage a collection of children's books and materials; develop children's programs and activities; and serve as lead resource for system-wide children's services work groups.The eligible list established from this recruitment will only be used to fill positions selectively certified in Children's Services.

Although no current vacancies require a specific language, the eligible list may be used to fill future vacancies that may require bilingual skills.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
General Librarian II Positions:
  • Conduct reference interview with patrons to determine inquiry needs; provide reference and reading guidance to children and adults, including the location, selection and use of materials; address special research needs.
  • Conduct training and supervise subordinate staff; write performance evaluations.
  • Manage materials budget.
  • Read and evaluate professional reviews of books, magazines, video cassettes or other materials for additions to library collection.

  • Monitor facilities and equipment maintenance and safety.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
For Selectively Certified Positions in Children's Services:
  • Conduct story times for children within the 0-5 age group.
  • Conduct library and research orientation to visiting K-6 classes.
  • Provide reader's advisory for children.
  • Manage a collection of books and other materials for children ages 0-14.
  • Participate in outreach to neighborhood schools and other groups that serve children.
  • Develop programs and activities to engage children ages 0-12 and their caregivers.
  • Serve as a lead resource for system-wide children's services work groups, and mentor for new children's services librarians.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION:
General Librarian II Positions:
Education:
A Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association accredited graduate program. 
Experience:
One year of experience comparable to the Librarian I position in the City of Oakland.


For Selectively Certified Positions in Children's Services:


Education:
A Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association accredited graduate program,  and the successful completion of two (2) MLIS courses with the word "children" or "youth" in the course title, or otherwise indicating academics in children's services to users ages 0-14 years. Job training and/or special courses in library needs of the community, specialized areas of library services or technical areas are desirable. One year full-time work experience in children's services in a library, classroom, day/summer camp, daycare, preschool, or similar work environment may be substituted for the two (2) MLIS courses.

NOTE
Applicants currently attending an accredited MLS/MLIS graduate program may submit an application up to three months prior to receiving their accredited MLS/MLIS degree. Candidates who are three months or less away from receiving their award of degree MUST submit proof of enrollment and verification of the  anticipated graduation date (from the graduate program) to be considered. 
The MLS/MLIS degree must be completed and verified prior to the candidate being placed on the eligible list and appointed to a Librarian II position. Experience:

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Stage III: The third stage may consist of an oral examination that may be preceded by a brief written exercise (weighted 100%) that will test the knowledge, skills and abilities listed in the qualifications section.The ranked eligible list may be developed directly from the supplemental screening OR the results of Stage III. Candidates must earn a scale score of 70 in this examination process to be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration.

POSITION SUMMARY:

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
New Materials Library
• Assist students and faculty using the collection
