Sacramento Country Day School is a private, independent, pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, coeducational, college preparatory school. The Matthews Library serves students in grades six through twelve. We are currently hiring a new library assistant. Library Technical Assistant
Position Information:
·        Grades six through twelve library
·        Part Time (30 hours/week; 5 days/week)
·        10-month position (mid-August to mid-June)
·        Hourly rate of pay commensurate with experience plus benefits

Qualifications:
·        Coursework in library science and/or experience working in library/media center.
·        Prefer cataloging knowledge (MARC, RDA).
·        Ability to communicate and successfully supervise middle and high school students (this will require a sense of humor and an appreciation for the age group).
·        Ability to perform clerical work, including word processing, with accuracy.
·        Proficiency with Microsoft Office, e-mail, Internet searching, social media, and technology in general.
·        Knowledge of Apple iOS devices, Mac OS, and Google Chrome helpful.
·        Ability to troubleshoot devices using both your own knowledge and Internet searching.
·        Demonstrated work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.
·        Ability to pursue work in an organized manner despite multiple interruptions.
·        Creativity as important as accuracy and attention to detail.

Duties & Responsibilities:
·        Cataloging using MARC and RDA formatting (Follett Destiny software).
·        Student supervision and assistance.
·        Assist in teaching lessons and assessing student work.
·        Help coordinate special events and displays.
·        Maintain library website.
·        Clerical work.
·        Inventory and perform tech support on iPads, Chromebooks, laptops, and audiovisual equipment.
·        Process materials.
·        Shelf maintenance.
·        Other duties as assigned.

BASIC FUNCTION:
Perform routine, complex duties in support of Library/Textbook Services; process and catalogue library, textbook, and instructional materials; pack textbook orders for sites, organize instructional materials on warehouse shelves, complete and file required paperwork; work with a team to ensure that sites receive library and instructional materials in a timely fashion.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below [E]. Perform a variety of tasks in connection with the district’s automated circulation/inventory systems for libraries and textbook management, such as Athena and Destiny; provide technical assistance, support, and training for automation systems, as assigned. E
Catalog and process library materials for all K-6 and K-8 schools; assist at site libraries as directed for inventory, reorganization, shifting collections, general clean-up, etc. E
Catalog and process all core textbooks for K-12 schools; organize curriculum materials for shipment to school sites (envelope, box, and/or palletize), complete order process, and contact school sites for changes. E
Manage the daily operation of the Professional Library at the Serna Center as assigned; assist with processing and cataloging new library materials as they arrive from publishers. E
Be able to perform all daily functions of a typical school library or textbook room: check in and out materials, shelve library materials/books, enter patrons into the automation system, conduct an automated inventory, etc. E
Work with school improvement initiatives that close student achievement gaps between racial, ethnic, and economic groups by working with all of the diverse communities. E
Operate a computer and related software to input, query, output, update, and access a variety of records and information; generate reports, records, lists, and summaries from computer database; operate standard office equipment; move and set-up computer equipment; manage moderate to heavy library and textbook materials. E

TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination or equivalent to graduation from high school, and three years library experience, including work in book acquisition, cataloging, reference, computer operations, or have completed certification in Library and Information Technology.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver’s license; provide personal automobile and proof of insurance. Overall scores in computer software testing program preferred as follows:

Serves as the lead person of the entire library/media center operation and may be responsible for a unit (technical services, public services, media services). Incumbents have a thorough understanding of the entire library/media center operation and have sufficient knowledge of all units to provide assistance, training, and /or backup in any unit. Serves as the lead for three or more regular staff in the library/media center operation; oversees lower level staff and/or students working in the library/media center operation. Incumbents work under the general supervision of the assigned manager/supervisor.
 
GENERAL: 
● Serves as lead person for library/media center operations. 

● Serves as liaison with other district libraries to develop and coordinate policies and procedures for assigned unit of work. 

● May be directly responsible for a unit (technical services, public services, media services) prepares financial, statistical and information reports. 

● Maintains inventory of department supplies and prepares requisitions for purchases; performs general typing and word processing duties. 

● Maintains files of correspondence, memoranda and records. 

● Assists in interviewing, training and overseeing student workers and lower level staff. 

● Establishes and maintains relationships with outside vendors/suppliers/book jobbers. 

● Performs related duties as required. 


TECHNICAL SERVICES: 

● Supervises the ordering and receiving of book and non-book materials. 

● Manages the book and non-book materials budgets including fund appropriations, encumbrances and expenditures. 

● Oversees the maintenance of the bibliographic/item records in the library's online catalog. 

● Pre-catalogs materials for review by librarians. 

● Searches for, edits, and retrieves catalog records using bibliographic utility (OCLC) for use in the library's online database. 

● Maintains bindery records. 

● Oversees the receiving and check-in of periodicals. 

● Orders and maintains periodical subscriptions. 

● Oversees inventory of the library collection. 

● Performs related duties as required. 


PUBLIC SERVICES: 

● Oversees the circulation operations of the library including patron registration, material check-in and charge out, overdue notice production, and fine collection. 

● Sets up and maintains the reserve materials collection. 

● Processes holds on student records. 

● Oversees re-shelving of library materials. 

● Performs tasks necessary to open and/or close the library facilities. 

● Resolves patron complaints or refers them to appropriate staff member.

MEDIA SERVICES: 

● Oversees the ordering, scheduling, receiving, circulation, and return of staff media requests. 

● Assists in classification and cataloging of media materials.

Sacramento - UC Davis Med Center Library - Library Assistant III (half-time) - Access Services Night and Weekend Assistant

Under general supervision, responsible for overseeing Access Services related functions including interpreting and enforcing unit, department, and library policy/procedure; opening and/or closing building; overall building and collection security; oversees Public Service Desk; may schedule, train and supervise student assistants. Position is responsible for representing the University Library to patrons on evenings, weekends and holidays.

Physical Demands:
Read print and computer screens. Lift material weighing 15 or more pounds and pass material across counters up to 40" in height. Move, load, and unload book trucks weighing up to 600 pounds. Shelve and retrieve material from stacks 5"-84" in height for extended periods of time.

Work Environment:
This Night & Weekend Assistant position works primarily at Blaisdell Medical Library (BML) in Sacramento. This position may be required to work at any of the University Library facilities as needed. Description of the primary location will vary depending upon whichever facility is the primary location of work.

Must be available to work a variable schedule and over 50% time to meet business needs. Hours worked are subject to change and vary by facility. Hours worked include, but not limited to, holidays, finals, intersession, and summer sessions.

Must substitute for Night and Weekend staff for planned and unplanned absences. Must be available for staff meetings during daytime hours.

Frequent interaction with patrons and staff; communicate in person, by telephone, and electronically.

Minimum Qualifications:
Library operations and practices work experience in an academic library public service setting (Facilities/Security, Circulation, Reference, Personnel, Stacks Maintenance, Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Services).

Interpersonal and communication skills to successfully interact with a diverse patron and staff population; to effectively explain complex policies; and to remain calm and exercise tact and compassion when dealing with difficult individuals.

Experience functioning as a work leader including training, directing, evaluating, and motivating others.

Organizational skills to work independently and follow established processes and priorities; and flexibility to manage rapid priority changes and adjust workflow to meet deadlines.

Analytical skills to determine solutions while maintaining compliance with established policies/guidelines. Problem resolution and policy exception granting/refusal experience.

Experience responding to emergencies and unusual situations, applying good judgment with appropriate incident management and/or referral.

Experience operating automated library systems, catalogs, and other library-related databases. Bibliographic skills.
