Library Research Fellowship Program, 2012-2013

Thanks to generous funding from the Elios Society, the University Library at California State University, Sacramento is pleased to inaugurate a three-year Library Research Fellowship Program to support the use of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection by fellows for scholarly research in Hellenic studies while in residence in Sacramento. The Program provides a limited number of fellowships ranging from $500 to $4,000 to help offset transportation and living expenses incurred during the tenure of the awards and is open to external researchers anywhere in the world at the doctoral through senior scholar levels (including independent scholars) working in fields encompassed by the Collection’s strengths who reside outside a 150 mile radius of Sacramento. The term of fellowships can vary between one week and three months, depending on the nature of the research, and for the first year will be tenable from July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013. The fellowship application deadline is March 13, 2012. No late applications will be considered.

Comprising the holdings of the former Speros Basil Vryonis Center for the Study of Hellenism, the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection, currently numbering some 75,000 volumes, was donated to Sacramento State in December 2002 and named in honor of its benefactor and alumnus Angelo Tsakopoulos. With its focus on the Hellenic world, the Collection contains early through contemporary materials across the social sciences and humanities relating to Greece, its neighboring countries and the surrounding region, with particular strengths in post-Classical Hellenism. There is a broad representation of languages in the Collection, with a rich assortment of primary source materials. Since 2009 the Collection has experienced dramatic growth with the gift acquisition of the libraries of the late Pyrrhus J. Ruches and the late Dr. Steve A. Demakopoulos, which together are adding over 5,000 volumes to our holdings in the areas of Greek language, folklore, history, literature, music, and anthropology. The Web Director will be responsible for providing end-users with access to our vast collection.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

Supervise all assigned subordinate staff, usually through other supervisors. Recruit, screen, hire and train staff. Assess need for technical/professional growth and recommend development opportunities. Evaluate employee performance, provide guidance and feedback. Counsel/discipline as needed.
Set departmental goals/objectives and communicate to staff. Assess or define priorities to achieve performance objectives.
Manage Web development project teams within budget and project schedule.
Provide leadership, direction, and technical expertise to design, develop, maintain, and evaluate libraries' web/mobile presence for services, content, & interfaces.
Define and refine processes and procedures for Web site maintenance.
Serve as the library representative on university Web Council and task forces.
Advise management regarding information systems requirements. Facilitate planning and direct the design, installation, modification and operations of department information systems.
Evaluate vendor proposals for purchases of hardware, software and technical services to assure adherence to specifications. Analyze project(s) feasibility.
Prepare long and short range plans for web applications selection, systems development, systems maintenance, production activities and support resources, coordinating area efforts with university-wide efforts.
Develop project specifications. Plan and coordinate project schedules & activities. Direct coding, testing, installation, debugging and documentation of systems developments and/or enhancements.
Plan/implement necessary controls and procedures to protect systems and data from modification, disclosure or destruction.
Ensure web-related information systems products meet standards and user requirements.
Test web-related software and hardware and monitors and resolves problems.
Oversee development and maintenance of web systems, programming and operations documentation.
Development of training materials and programs for department staff/users.
Stay informed of new developments in field and technology changes. Make recommendations to management regarding web/web technology changes.
Develop/implement security related procedures. Coordinate security activities with University Public Safety Department. Promote and maintain standards for security. Ensure dissemination of security related information to staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree
Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education
Minimum Experience: 5 years
Minimum Field of Expertise: Directly relevant experience administering comparable information systems to be able to provide technical direction to systems development and support staff. Supervisory and budget experience.

Qualifications

Required:

* At least three years of experience cataloging library materials.

* Knowledge of national standards, such as AACR2 (revised), USMARC, LCSH, LC Classification, MARCIVE, CONSER and RDA.

* In depth experience with the cataloging module and OPAC from Innovative Interfaces, Inc. (III) library system or similar ILS cataloging and OPAC modules.

* Ability to coordinate with vendors to acquire cataloging records meeting appropriate standards.

* Familiarity with workflow and metrics assessment.

* Strong leadership skills and the ability to work both independently and collegially in a demanding and rapidly changing environment.

* Well-developed analytical, organizational and communications skills (oral, written, and interpersonal).

Preferred

* Experience with RDA formatted records and the developing RDA standard.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Book Sales Manager is responsible for overseeing all activities of the operations of the bookrooms and other locations for the acquisition and sale of books and other materials by FOPAL. This includes managing the activities of the functions listed below, most of which are performed by well over 100 experienced volunteers. The Manager is responsible for allocating resources, enforcing policies, resolving conflicts, expediting procedures, communicating among all concerned and assuring a smooth operation. The Manager reports to the FOPAL Board and will be asked to attend those monthly meetings as requested and to provide needed information. Part to full time.

RESPONSIBILIITES

1) Staffing

a) Recruit, train and communicate with volunteers staffing a wide variety of positions.

i) Recruit and oversee a staff of volunteer managers with responsibility for functions such as donations and sorting, main room sections, bargain room, children’s room, training, communication, monthly and special sales oversight, permanent stores, communications and publicity, operations including transport and storage of books

ii) Identify and train volunteers to sort, price and shelve books for the sale. Give volunteers experience in different jobs so they can move into other areas.

iii) Provide meaningful and enjoyable jobs for high school students

iv) Manage day labor hired occasionally for big jobs.

v) Implement and maintain policies for hours, volunteer purchases, etc.

b) Manage internet and high value sales team, which consists of one paid employee and several volunteers. This team sells books on Amazon, eBay, at Pacific Book Auctions, and through other outlets.

2) Manage book flow.

a) Provide for movement of book boxes from sorting room to main room sections and to other sale rooms.

b) Coordinate workers who pickup from individual donors and from library branches.

c) Plan for large donations, e.g. schedule staff, packing, transport, and storage for large donations.

d) Plan for movement of books in and out of warehouse storage.

3) Site Efficiency

a) Decide how each room is utilized for maximum efficiency and ease of customer flow. Resolve competing needs for particular space.

b) Maintain system of phone answering and message taking

c) Oversee acquisition of office supplies, snacks and water for volunteers

d) Make sure adequate equipment is acquired and maintained with the Board set budget

e) Keep aisles, office, and other work areas clean and clear.

f) Coordinate building maintenance issues and recycling.

g) Work with Cubberley management and Library Director’s office as needed on facility issues.

4) Monthly Book Sale (second weekend each month)

a) Ensure adequate volunteer coverage for each sale and automate sign-up procedure

b) Help decide on monthly specials

c) Set policies for sale functions such as ticket line, number of books to be purchased in early hours, dealing with troublesome customers, gift certificates, member sales, etc.

d) Attend and oversee sale

e) Implement proper material, cash handling and financial record procedures so as to provide audit trail in accordance with Board policy

5) Permanent stores in Downtown and Mitchell Library branches.

a) Staffing, inventory, handling cash, merchandising (e.g. displays, signage), etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills, teamwork orientation, and ability to motivate wide range of people.
A minimum of two years prior management or staff supervision experience. Prior experience in volunteer management highly desirable
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated writing
Demonstrated ability to execute operational strategies and manage projects in a volunteer organization.
Strong organizational and administrative skills. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team and with all levels of staff, Board, membership and volunteers.
Office software proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Database experience also a plus.

THE POSITION: Reporting to the Corte Madera Branch Manager, the Library Circulation Supervisor will oversee the operation of the library circulation desk and supervise a team consisting of a Library Assistant II, a Library Assistant I, Library Branch Aides, and several volunteers. Primary responsibility for the Library Circulation Supervisor will be overall management of the branch’s library collection including books, magazines, displays, and online collection and assisting patrons with complex questions. The Los Rios Community College District is seeking a pool of qualified applicants for possible temporary part-time teaching assignments. These positions are filled on an as needed basis and are on-going recruitments. Assignments may include day, evening and weekend courses.

Responsibilities:
The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: maintaining thorough and up-to-date knowledge in his/her regular field; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Have a master's degree from an accredited institution in library science, library and information science; OR, hold a California Community College Instructor's Credential in Library Science; OR, the equivalent. Oversee and manage the digitization of several archival collections

Provide reference and consultation services to the student, faculty, and visiting scholar patrons of the department; conducting library instruction for classes interpreting and helping students to appreciate the unique and rare resources of the department
Assume responsibility for outreach and the marketing of department services to the campus and outside communities
Work closely with subject librarians and other members of the University community as appropriate
Serve a rotation at the central reference desk approximately 6 hours per week including some nights and weekends
Engage in library and university governance and scholarship, including research and publication
Oversee the work of staff and student assistants assigned to the department

About the Position:

The Sacramento Public Library is seeking candidates to establish an Eligibility List which will be used to staff part time openings that may occur in the next 12 months.
