The University of California, Irvine Libraries seeks strategic leadership for the position of Assistant/Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Research Resources.  Reporting to the University Librarian, the AUL plays a critical role in fostering local and collaborative strategies to shape a robust and sustainable environment for scholarly content.   We are seeking an innovative, creative, flexible, and knowledgeable leader to join an enthusiastic staff in shaping the development of next-generation technical services, the integration of print and digital resources into high quality 21st century collections, and the development of services to support the efforts of faculty and students to contribute digital content to the broader scholarly community.  The AUL will serve as the chief architect of the integration of separate Collections and Technical Services divisions into a single Research Resources division with enhanced capabilities to support the full life cycle of knowledge resources and scholarly communication in furtherance of the mission and academic programs of the University.
The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  The University has an excellent benefits program including leave policies, retirement system, and insurance plans which equal approximately 40% of salary.

Provides excellent customer service when dealing with the public. Provides professional Librarian service to the public by answering research and reference questions; Assists with homework questions for children (primarily eighth grade and under); plans, prepares, and implements story times; evaluates assigned sections of the children’s materials collection for the selection of new purchases and replacements and de-selection of outdated materials; provides reader’s advisory services for children, parents, and teachers. Provides professional and administrative assistance to the Director of Library Services in planning, organizing and directing services and programs for the Solano County Library.
·         Works closely with the Director to form policies, set goals and respond to the needs of both the staff and the public. 
·         Accountable for ensuring effective program planning, systems and quality of operations for library services and staff in addition to directing day-to-day library operations.
·         Assists the Director in the recruitment, selection, development and evaluation of staff.
·         Represents the department to other departments, elected officials, advisory boards and commissions, and community agencies. 
·         Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive community or staff inquiries and complaints. 
·         Exempt from civil service, “at will” and serves at the pleasure of the appointing authority and reports to the Director of Library Services.

The ideal candidate is an innovative strategist with outstanding interpersonal skills, professional commitment and integrity, with the ability to set priorities and communicate effectively with varied audiences. Must be an effective leader who has the ability to develop, identify, motivate and properly direct professional and managerial staff in fulfillment of a strategic plan that is community focused, staff inspired and outreach oriented.
QUALIFICATIONS
Four years of supervisory/administrative experience of library programs and services and supervision of professional and technical staff.  Extensive education, training or additional experience in public administration including budget, planning, evaluation and implementation of services. MLS or MLIS required.

The Content Acquisition and Resource Sharing (CARS) program is responsible for providing access to needed information resources through purchasing, resource sharing, and licensed resources. CARS uses the appropriate tools to locate and/or request resources as efficiently as possible and on the best possible terms. The Program also provides collection and financial analysis for the Library's collections budget.

Program activities include:
  1. Acquiring and licensing print and electronic content.
  2. Receiving, paying for, and managing cataloging records for all vendor-provided shelf-ready and DDA materials, regardless of language.
  3. Providing, maintaining and troubleshooting electronic access to content for the University campus (includes UCSD Health System).
  4. Actively participating in responding to questions regarding electronic resource access problems.
  5. Participating in UC wide collaborative acquisition programs.
