LIBRARIAN (ADJUNCT/PART-TIME) KM

DESCRIPTION:

EXAMPLES OF FUNCTIONS AND TASKS:

Reference/Information Referral 

    Perform daily operations of the Reference Department, including desk coverage, statistical tracking, in-person and online reference services; and user studies;  

    Provide consultation to users regarding the availability of intra-and interlibrary loan services;  

    Share evening/weekend reference desk duty,as necessary;  

    Assume leadership role in LRC;  

    Liaison with instructional faculty;  

    Assist in the design and development of services;  

    Assist library users in the use of library technologies, including use of Microsoft Office, LibCal Reservation system, printing services and wireless network, etc . 

Collection Development/Maintenance 

    Coordinate the selection and organization of appropriate research materials to support a diverse, interdisciplinary reference and general collection in assigned selection areas;  

    Oversee the organization, maintenance, and appropriateness of library holdings, ensuring that collections adequately support varying modes of instruction, learning styles, and curricular trends;  

    Assume a leadership role in the management of subscriptions (i.e., approval plans, standing orders, vendor contracts, acquisition processes, etc.);  

    Assist with the development of collection goals, policies and programs; analyze appropriate trade and professional publications for selection purposes;  

    Assist with formulating and maintaining tracking systems for planning and development purposes. 

    Collaborate with other District librarians and instructional faculty in the development of collection goals, policies and programs; 

    Participate in investigation and costing of LRC equipment needs and selection of print and non-print materials;  

Instruction 

    Coordinate the development and delivery of general and specialized library instruction sessions;  

    Prepare course-related modules to support research needs of students;  

    Develop online library guides, tutorials,handouts, and other research aids for Library users;  

    Maintain current awareness of new sources and how to integrate them into research processes;  

    Prepare lecture and lesson plans for both customized and generalized subject presentations;  

    Design assessment tools to maximize instructional effectiveness;  

    Create activities/exercises designed to assist students in skill and knowledge development;  

    Orient library users to the use of the library and LRC facilities as well as resources and research methodology; 

    Design and deliver structured presentations related to the use of electronic technologies, the development of search strategies, and the basic and advanced elements of the research process.  

User Services/Liaison 

    Provide system and service support in all general circulation activities including interlibrary loans and reserves;  

    Develop, promote and coordinate support for the service mission of the LRC;  

    Assist with review and assessment of public service functions and with achieving appropriate staff training levels;  

    Provide training of staff to assess user needs and interests; provide guidance to staff regarding operational processes and procedures;  

    Assist at circulation desk, as necessary; collaborate with staff in the areas of problem resolution and the assessment of user needs and interests;  

    Maintain currency regarding trends and developments as they relate to the delivery and function of effective circulation services 

Professional Development 

    Monitor current literature, listservs and other professional publications for professional development as well as acquisition purposes;  

     Attend and report on appropriate meetings, conferences, sessions and training workshops related to library developments and trends;  

    Develop and maintain collegial contacts both inside and outside of the campus structure.  

 

Training/Program Development 

    Develop individualized training workshops for staff designed to met various learning styles, skill levels, and prior knowledge levels;  

    Design and present staff workshops regarding systems, programming and services; provide staff orientations related to service techniques and user consultation;  

    Develop, construct materials for, and seek alternative funding sources (e.g., grant proposals, entrepreneurial enterprises, etc.);  

    Research and compile reports related to present and future Library/ LRC goals, including needs assessment, user surveys, service questionnaires, and unit planning guides.  

Shared Governance Activities 

    Attend and participate in library/LRC meetings, periodic divisional and campus meetings and activities, including collaborative activities, as feasible and appropriate; respond in writing for requests for information (for example, employment process position questionnaires, unit planning guides, environmental impact reports, etc);  

    Represent LRC by serving on campus-wide committees; 

    Serve on employee selection committees, as requested;  

    Serve as a functional member of one or more committees and/or task forces; attend Board of Trustees and/or College Council meetings, as necessary, and read shared governance body minutes, Board of Trustees reports, etc., to maintain knowledge of campus activities;  

    Read and respond to information polls distributed by the Academic senate and other shared governance bodies and those distributed in connection with peer and administrator performance reviews.  

Ancillary Student Services 

    Provide students and peers with a positive role model in terms of character and citizenship;  

    Participate in graduation and outstanding student award ceremonies;   

    Provide students with letters of recommendation, as requested;  

    Advise and encourage students relative to library science.

DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision of a manager, performs oversight of the technical support for all information delivery systems critical to daily library processes, services and operations by providing high level support of library technologies, ensuring interoperability of an array of systems, and interfaces, by acting as liaison between users, the District’s IIT Department, and external companies. Further responsibilities include ensuring data integrity, generating statistical data, collection maintenance, para-professional cataloging and physical processing of materials.

Incumbent(s) of the Library Technical and Technology Specialist classification must be able to perform all functions and tasks contained within the classification and may be assigned to perform occasional reference functions such as assisting patrons with reference questions in the absence of LRC/Library Reference/Collections Librarian(s) and/or to perform occasional supervision of student and/or other temporary help, as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF FUNCTIONS AND TASKS:

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

    Assist in planning and implementing long range library systems requirements, needs, and goals, as well as final selections of software and delivery systems.

    Analyze current library systems functions, processes, and information retrieval platforms/use as well as other data and trends to determine library needs and collection allocation.

    Research and perform standard updates and procedures necessary for the operation of a variety of information delivery systems in the library.

    Support the integration of new technologies and methodologies, and determine their compatibility with other District Systems.

    Triage library related technology issues, consult with IIT staff to find and implement solutions. Report technical, software maintenance, and security concerns/problems to outside vendors as well as generate IIT work orders to address library systems' issues.

    Design, modify and run database queries to extract statistical information from library databases to prepare reports for the library staff, District Planning Office, the State of California and the Dean of the LRC to assist in the securing of continued funding for the library, to assist in staff scheduling, and collection development and deselection processes.

    Catalogs/re-catalogs, and classifies/re-classifies print and non-print materials including electronic data, books, videotapes, DVDs, CD-ROMS, computer software, prints, CDs and any other materials requested. This entails editing, proofreading, and updating MARC records and importing them into our databases while maintaining strict AACR2R and RDA standards and District library standards.

    Coordinates and participates in managing collection space, materials deselection processes, and shifting as well as collection inventories. Oversee typical shelf maintenance procedures performed by college employees. Maintain proper collection directional signage. 

    Performs complex name and subject heading authority file work to meet Library of Congress, OCLC and District quality standards.

    Trains, coordinates, supervises, and evaluates work performed by student and/or other temporary help assigned to perform general cataloging and stack maintenance assignments. 

    Provides circulation, reference and directional assistance for students and staff as needed; checks out, checks in, renews, reserves, requests and locals all forms of library materials for students, staff, and the general public; provides orientation and reference services for library patrons; provides assistance in the use of reference research databases; provides general assistance to library patrons including explaining campus and library policies and procedures.

    As assigned, performs special projects related to area of assignment. 

    Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Examples of ways to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Education/Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized coursework or on-the-job training in library science and computer sciences.

    Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible cataloging library experience.

    License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a deep class with the Senior Library Technician classification in which incumbents shall be assigned to any level, provided they possess the required education, experience and/or certification for the class to which they are to be assigned. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

 

  • Oversee a variety of daily activities for the library; open and close the library; monitor the library security system; secure book drops, money trays and computer terminals. Perform library cash transactions including collecting fines for overdue and lost materials and giving refunds; balance the daily cash report.
  • Assist to develop and implement library policies and procedures and federal copyright laws; apply, implement, interpret and explain library policies and procedures to patrons.
  • Maintain confidential patron records.
  • Monitor database collection of all print, media and digital collections for the District; resolve discrepancies and regulate the electronic removal of bibliographic records from the automated database and withdrawal of obsolete and damaged library materials.
  • Direct the circulation of library materials; assist with annual electronic collection inventories; discharge library materials and assist with the preparation and distribution of notices for overdue library materials and unresolved library charges.
  • Input data into District student account files to ensure accurate assessment and collection of library charges and fines; maintain patron accounts; issue library and/or Student ID cards; update status and patron information

Description

Beginning Fall 2023, one full-time tenure-track faculty position will be available in the Luria Library. We are seeking applicants who have a commitment to student success and can participate in a team environment dedicated to excellent service and culturally responsive librarianship that addresses the racial, gender, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within our community college student population. Our emphasis on creativity, collaboration, and intentional use of technology makes the Luria Library a dynamic workplace.

The Outreach and Collection Development Librarian will work collaboratively with other librarians, faculty and staff to design intentional programming, create partnerships and maintain culturally diverse and inclusive library materials to support student learning, success, and equity. The Librarian will lead the Luria Library’s collection development and management activities to ensure that purchased library materials support student success in a rapidly changing information landscape. The Librarian will cultivate relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members to encourage collaborative partnerships. The Librarian will work closely with staff and faculty across academic, student services, and student academic support departments to raise awareness about the various ways that the Library can serve as an essential partner in facilitating student success.

Other major responsibilities include providing face-to-face and online reference services, instructing students and faculty in the use of Library resources, and teaching information competency workshops grounded in the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy and the Luria Library’s Program Student Learning Outcomes. In our teaching, we seek to use critical information literacy instruction and culturally responsive pedagogy for engaging Black, Latinx/e, and other students who are historically underrepresented and underserved by many academic libraries. Responsibilities also include full participation in departmental responsibilities and college service (such as committee assignments and co-curricular activities).

SALARY & PERSONNEL BENEFITS:

The current salary schedule range for an entering tenure-track faculty member is $64,204  - $100,654 plus an earned doctoral bonus of $3,210.20. Depending on the entry step, the faculty member advances one-step each year and has the potential to reach the current maximum step of $128,134, depending on the educational level attained. Starting salary is commensurate with academic preparation and full-time related, paid experience. In addition to salary, each full-time employee participates in a "cafeteria style" health and welfare benefits program.

The Pollak Library empowers and nurtures our academic community in the pursuit, discovery, and creation of knowledge. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Associate Dean of the Library for Collections and Scholarly Communications. Reporting to the Dean of the Pollak Library, the Associate Dean (AD) for Collections and Scholarly Communications (C&SC) provides leadership and collaborative expertise for developing, sustaining, and delivering the collections the Pollak Library owns and accesses. In collaboration with the Dean, collections librarian, subject liaisons, and campus faculty, the Associate Dean works across programmatic lines to build and maintain vital collections, and to participate in emerging content management workflows. Gathers, assesses, reorganizes, and analyzes qualitative and quantitative data. Contributes to the strategic allocation of resources for collections in traditional and emergent formats, and designs interpretive reports for collection management in an environment of change in scholarly communication and publishing. Strategic directions include but are not limited to integrating developments in scholarly publishing and communications and open content, balancing commercial/commodity collection building, and obtaining and exposing unique scholarly content and CSUF research.

The Associate Dean works closely with the Dean and others across the CSU to provide strategic leadership in harnessing the power of the Unified Library Management System (ULMS), a consortial implementation of Ex Libris Alma, to build a statewide collection of resources that supports student success, faculty teaching, and research. The Associate Dean will have overall management responsibility for the Collections and Scholarly Communications unit that oversees the selection, acquisition, cataloging, and maintenance of materials in all formats, as well as University Archives and Special Collections (UA&SC), interlibrary loan, and scholarly communications initiatives. This currently includes 21 FTE. Works collaboratively with unit librarians and staff in setting the strategic direction of all components of the unit. Works closely with the Associate Dean for Public Services on technologies that support UA&SC and digital preservation. With the Scholarly Communication, Open Educational Resources, and Copyright and Policy librarians, the AD provides strategic direction for CSUF's support for open access, open educational resources, digital scholarship and preservation, and the campus institutional repository. Serves as a member of the Pollak Library Dean's Council, the library's senior leadership group. Reporting to the Dean and working closely with the rest of the library's senior leadership team, the AD represents the library in areas of strategic importance, contributes to the library's fundraising program, and is expected to play a leadership role in defining and executing an innovative vision of scholarly resources and their management. Works closely with unit personnel, fiscal services, and the Dean in monitoring the collections resources budget. As a senior leader in the library, the AD builds and sustains successful collaborations with creative approaches to mentoring and empowering employees, fostering and leading cross unit teams, and solving organizational problems and issues, while emphasizing user centered service. The AD advances diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the unit in alignment with the University’s strategic plan. Works in close collaboration with library colleagues and classroom faculty and administrators across both CSUF and the entire California State University (CSU) system. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications


Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited program.  A minimum of three years of progressively responsible administrative experience in an academic or research library setting including personnel supervision. Demonstrated deep understanding of the role of the library and scholarly information resources, data, and institutional assets in supporting student success, teaching, and research. Experience leading scholarly resource identification, licensing and acquisition, management, and delivery. Experience in library budget administration. Demonstrated capability to develop new models of providing access to scholarly resources, data, and institutional assets. Experience with assessment of resources and related services; capacity for evidence-based collection development and management. Robust knowledge of issues and trends in scholarly communication and publishing across disciplines and globally. Understanding and appreciation for archives and special collections and their roles of cultural stewardship and teaching. Deep expertise in one or more areas of the position's general responsibility: scholarly resource development and evaluation, acquisition and management, delivery and access, cataloging and metadata, scholarly communication and digital scholarship, interlibrary loan and resource sharing, archives and special collections. Demonstrated leadership experience and evidence of flexibility and initiative in a collaborative and rapidly changing environment. Demonstrated commitment and contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion in a professional setting.

Expertise and experience onboarding and mentoring staff and faculty, including the assessment and implementation of library technical services workflows to maximize efficiency and promote collaborative teamwork.

License/Certifications


Valid California Driver's License. The position requires the use of a state vehicle to transport to events and visit schools and other outside constituents at variable hours.

Representative Duties


The successful applicant will be expected to provide instruction in Information Competency, both in the classroom and within the library. Information Competency topics include recognizing an information need, information retrieval, evaluation of information, information formats, presenting information effectively, understanding legal and ethical aspects of information.

This assignment may include day or evening classes, weekend classes, large classes, distance learning and using multiple teaching methodologies.

Other duties include: performing academic reference, instruction in the use of the library’s online resources, developing and presenting library research and writing workshops, promotion of library resources to faculty, and other general library activities such as collection development, developing subject guides and promotion and outreach.
