The Sonoma County Library is seeking customer service driven library professionals with excellent communication skills.

THE POSITIONS:

Under general supervision, provides excellent customer service while performing a variety of professional adult and children's library services, including reference, reader's advisory, collection development, and programming; performs related work as assigned.

SCHEDULE:

Tuesday through Saturday with possible evening hours on Wednesday until 8:00 pm. There may be some flexibility in start and end times and meal breaks.

TYPICAL TASKS include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides general reference and reader's advisory services; 
  • explains library policies and procedures to patrons and staff; 
  • assists and advises patrons regarding the use of library materials and equipment, including automated catalogs, the Internet, various software, eBooks and downloadable audiobooks; 
  • conducts reference searches using a variety of database, online, and other search techniques; 
  • helps to maintain and select the addition of books, reference materials, CD's, DVD's, electronic media, and other library materials suitable for children and/or adults; 
  • assists in or directs the preparation of exhibits and the organization and presentation of a variety of programs for adults and children; 
  • promotes the Library at community schools and events and provides written outreach through community publications; 
  • may represent the Library in meetings with the community or special interest groups. 
  • The Librarian II performs all of these tasks but at a more difficult, higher level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS), Master of Library Science (MLS), or Master of Science in Library Science (MSLS) degree from an accredited college or university.

The Librarian II requires two years of appropriate professional experience working as a children's and adult reference librarian, preferably in a public library.

OVERVIEW:
The Reference Librarian is responsible for the library instruction program, all reference activities, collection development, and the maintenance of the integrated library system and the library website.  The Reference Librarian serves as acting director in the absence of the Library Director.  As a member of the faculty, the Reference Librarian serves on various college committees and represents the library at appropriate local, state or national meetings.

POSITION DUTIES:
In addition to the responsibilities of the classification description, the specific position is also responsible for:

Representative Duties:
The responsibilities of the Reference Librarian include but are not limited to the following:
  • Assisting faculty, staff and students in the use of print and automated library sources.
  • Developing and teaching information-seeking skills to faculty, staff and students. With the assistance of relevant faculty, plans and coordinates library resources in relation to new classroom learning.
  • Selecting and recommending automated and print sources for purchase by the library.
  • Writing and releasing procedures for circulating the general collection, reserve and periodicals collections, and for the utilization of the reference collection.
  • Assisting in the selection, training, and supervising of employees within departments. Serves as acting director in the absence of the Library Director.
  • As a member of the faculty, serving on various college committees.
  • Representing the library at appropriate local, state or national meetings.
  • Assisting in grant-writing activities with various faculty and administrators, as needed.
  • Development and assessment of student learning outcomes.

Sonoma County Library is seeking a customer service oriented individual with excellent project management skills, and solid communication, interpersonal relations, organizational, and problem solving skills to serve as the Administrative Specialist in support of the Library Commission and Human Resources for the county-wide library system. This position is located at the Central Library in downtown Santa Rosa, in the heart of Wine Country, with the Redwoods and Pacific Ocean only minutes away.

THE POSITION

Under the general direction of the Human Resources Manager, supports operational activities of the Library Commission, Library Administration, and the Human Resources Department. Supports a broad range of management functions, including scheduling, minute-taking, electronic and print records maintenance, both internal and external communications, recruitment, and labor negotiations. Serves as liaison to the Library Commission.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: 
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in library science, education, business or public administration, finance, human resources, management, or a related field,

    and
  • two (2) years of administrative experience, preferably in a library setting;

TYPICAL TASKS

The Sacramento History Museum is looking for reliable self-starters with can-do attitudes, integrity, enthusiasm, a sense of fun and a driven work ethic to lead Underground Tours, Gold Rush Experience Walking Tours and Underground After Hours Adult Tours in the Old Sacramento Historic District.  Tour Guides must be professional, have experience working with the public, possess excellent customer service skills, and have an interest in history, theater and education.
Preferential consideration will be given to those with college-level coursework in history, theater, education, or to those with tour guide experience.

Duties include:

  • Speaking to large groups in a clear, organized, and creative way, as you guide them through the District
  • Returning tour groups to the Museum in a timely manner
  • Answering visitors’ questions based on knowledge of Old Sacramento History
  • Participating in tour guide training
  • Reading the interpretive plan and using it to develop a unique 50-minute long tour
  • Assisting the Tour Coordinators with ticket sales, equipment collection, and other tour logistics
  • Successful candidates will be reliable, enthusiastic, energetic, articulate, good public speakers, friendly, and responsible.

Job Description: 

Under the direction of a supervisor or director, performs technically complex duties requiring a comprehensive understanding of library media principles, practices and procedures and may assist within the different areas of Learning Resources and may require performance of a variety of less responsible duties as a secondary assignment.

This position is primarily assigned to the Library Media Technology Center (LMTC). DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Library Media Technician III classification is assigned a broader, more complex technical duties which requires a comprehensive understanding of library media principles, practices and procedures.

Incumbents in the Library Media Technician I classification are at an entry level position. This position assists in routine library-related tasks under close supervision in different locations in the Learning Resources unit.

The Library Media Technician V classification performs at the technical specialist level. This position performs complex, skilled technical work requiring a comprehensive understanding of library media principles, practice and procedures.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Train and provide work direction to assigned personnel, prioritizes and assigns work, and ensures timely and accurate completion. 
  • Monitor, adjust, balance, and maintain day-to-day Learning Resources operation of assigned area.
  • Research and recommend process improvements to provide timely and more efficient use of resources.
  • Assist with initiating, planning, and developing library/media projects in assigned areas.

Position and Duties

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet the requirements below:

1. Education:

Student Intern: Any combination equivalent to completion of high school and current enrollment in an accredited college or university in undergraduate or graduate program.

Graduate Student Intern: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of a Bachelor's Degree and current enrollment in a Master's of Library and Information Science Degree program from an American Library Association accredited college or university. Interns must continue to be enrolled in a college or university during their employment with the City of San Jose.

Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate or graduate program is required. Student and Graduate student interns must continue to be enrolled in a college or university during their employment with the City of San José.
