The County of Yolo is recruiting for one regular, full-time Outreach and Programming Librarian position at the Yolo County Library.  The selected candidate will work primarily at the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, and will be required to work evening and weekend hours as part of their regular schedule. They will also provide programs and outreach services throughout the County of Yolo, focusing on reaching communities that are underserved. They will coordinate with various government and non-government organizations to most efficiently serve the communities.  The candidate selected will be placed at the Librarian I or Librarian II level depending on their background and experience and at the discretion of the appointing authority.

Definition


Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of professional duties involving circulation, programming, technology, and reference services within the County Library system; and does other related work as required.
 

Distinguishing Characteristics


The Librarian I/II class has two salary levels. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and the level at which appointments are made is at the discretion of the appointing authority. The Librarian I is the entry level in this class series. Initially, incumbents work under closer supervision, and are given detailed instructions in the performance of routine tasks that are more structured and repetitive than those assigned to the Librarian II. As skills and knowledge are developed, incumbents are expected to perform increasingly responsible and difficult assignments.  At the discretion of the appointing authority, incumbents may advance to Librarian II after demonstrating the ability to perform the full journey duties of the class, which generally requires two years of experience as a Librarian I.

The Librarian II is the journey level in the class series. Incumbents work under general supervision and are expected to be proficient in performing a variety of responsible and more difficult professional library work. Specific duties of individual positions may vary, depending on assignment, but the preponderant responsibilities of all positions in this class are related to system-wide functions that include circulation, program, technology and reference services. While some Librarian II incumbents supervise paraprofessional library staff and volunteers, all Librarian II incumbents are expected to provide lead direction and guidance to entry level Librarians, paraprofessional library staff, extra help employees and/or volunteers.
 
Incumbents in this class report to a Library Regional Manager or other management personnel. While the Librarian II class may supervise staff in some instances, it does not supervise other professional Librarians.

Essential Functions


Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:.

  • Provides system-wide library services such as archives, circulation, collection development, reference and reader's advisory, technology services, and youth, teen, or adult programming.
  • Provides assistance to customers through a variety of methods to ensure that customers have the ability to effectively utilize all library resources; assists customers with utilizing social media and on-line tools, library programs, and a variety of reference services; teaches basic internet searching and other computer classes as assigned.
  • Develops, coordinates, and facilitates a variety of library programs, services and outreach to a variety of customers using a systems-thinking approach, and organizes and facilitates community engagement events to meet customer needs.
  • Serves as a liaison to community groups, organizations, and agencies, and acts as an ambassador for the Yolo County Library System.
  • Performs troubleshooting for library computers, other electronic devices, and equipment.
  • Conducts analysis using a variety of methods to make recommendations and/or implement solutions. 
  • Distributes and assigns work to employees; monitors work for progress and quality; ensures work is completed in a timely and efficient manner; reviews work.
  • Provides training and mentoring to staff in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assists, guides, and instructs subordinate library staff and/or volunteers in the performance of their duties; provides technical direction and problem solving in response to staff work questions and problems.
  • Provides input to supervisor on employee performance and informs supervisor of conduct problems.
  • Responds to and coordinates with supervisor to resolve routine customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Demonstrates professional commitment by attending workshops and educational programs, reading periodicals and specialized literature, attending staff meetings, participating in committees, and engaging with other organizations that further the library's mission and goals.

Employment Standards


Librarian I:


Education: Master's Degree in Library Science or Library Information Services or related library field from an accredited graduate school of Librarianship.

Librarian II:

Position Profile 


SMC is looking for a tech-savvy instructional reference librarian who will play a key role in shaping the future of the library at one of the largest community colleges in Southern California.

The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about culturally-responsive pedagogical techniques and effective practices of engaging students who are historically underrepresented and underserved in traditional classrooms. General Description


Sequoias Community College District is seeking an equity-minded candidate to join our Library/Learning Resource Center as a Director, Learning Resources Center serving our students at the Visalia, Hanford and Tulare Campuses.

Under the direction of the Academic Dean, the Director of Learning Resources will be responsible for the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the college’s library and distance education services for the District. The Director of Learning Resources functions as a reference/academic librarian, and supervises staff, curriculum, facilities, budget and related tasks for the assigned programs.

Job Duties


Job duties of the Director, Learning Resource Center include:

  • Directs all Learning Resources, including facility use, individualized instruction, web site development and maintenance, grant management and other designated programs and services, and fosters a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
  • Provides leadership and administrative support in the development and implementation of Distance Education planning and review as well as related student technology support.
  • Coordinates the operation of the Learning Resource Centers for the District.
  • Coordinates the operation of support services for distance education, including Canvas support and student technology supports
  • Provide leadership in developing access to electronic information resources and multimedia products, collection development, and otherwise working with faculty to augment materials and informational services that support the teaching/learning functions of the District.
  • Coordinates the introduction of technological advances in information access into the Library/Learning Resources Center and supervises ongoing programs to instruct faculty, staff, and students in such use.
  • Supervises, counsels, disciplines and annually evaluates the performance of direct reports. 
  • Ensures that the Library/Learning Resources Centers’ practices are consistent with District policy procedures, local, state and federal laws, and other contracts or agreements Serves in additional librarian capacities (reference, collection development and instruction) as needed.
  • Recommends the establishment of academic and classified positions in assigned areas of responsibility, participates in the development of position descriptions, job announcements, search and selection processes.  
  • Coordinates and provides leadership in curriculum development and program planning and review.
  • Submits recommended curriculum and catalog changes to the Office of Academic Services.
  • Attends College Curriculum committee as a non-voting member.
  • Assesses enrollment data and developing the schedule of courses and submits all scheduling information for courses in a timely and accurate manner, complying with District requirements.

  • Assists in planning the District budget by organizing and submitting the Learning Resources and distance education budgets to the Office of Academic Services.
  • Manages all budgets within the areas of responsibility and oversees the maintenance of budget records and files, supervises and approves all appropriate expenditures.
  • Attends meetings of specific instruction groups and serves on college committees and task forces as required or assigned.
  • Acts as a resource to faculty on matters related to improvement of teaching, learning and librarianship.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Master’s degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association or the equivalent; and 
  • Three years of supervisory experience in reference and instructional activities in an academic setting, preferably at an institution of higher education.
  • Successful experience supervising or using distance learning education at the college level desired.
