Description
The Access Services department at Stanford Libraries (SL) seeks a creative, energetic, and focused individual to fill the role of Part-time Library Circulation Specialist.

During the first six months, this Part-time Circulation Specialist will work additional hours and will have this schedule.
Friday-Saturday: 10am-7pm
Sunday: 10am-5pm
Monday: 8am-5pm

The Part-time Circulation Specialist will work at the Circulation & Privileges desk at Stanford’s Cecil H. Green Library providing excellent customer service by charging and discharging library and course reserve materials, answering questions, providing technical and computer assistance, issuing access and borrowing cards to affiliated scholars and fee borrowers, and taking payment for library fines and fees. The Circulation Specialist must successfully interpret and communicate SL policies and procedures, develop a rich and varied knowledge of SL resources and University services, and skillfully manage referrals. S/he will be called upon to troubleshoot and maintain library technology, including printers, copiers, and scanners, using established procedures. S/he will also assist in processing new materials, and compiling and generating department statistics.

The Specialist will be responsible for securing the Green Library as part of a closing team. S/he may be required to handle difficult situations such as medical emergencies, building alarms or incident reports according to department procedures.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Library Specialist may be assigned several duties within one or more functional areas of a library. Performs tasks under general supervision, exercising some initiative. May supervise hourly employees and oversee the day-to-day operations of a branch library or library.

CORE DUTIES:
Public Interaction, including job duties such as:
•    Perform circulation and privileges functions such as charging, discharging, managing holds and reserves, accepting payment of library fines, and issuing/updating library cards (for access and borrowing) according to established policies and procedures.
•    Refer fine appeals to supervisor
•    Assist patrons with access problems, route problems to supervisor
•    Release keys and combinations to assigned study spaces and lockers
•    Answer informational and ready reference questions in person and via email with clarity, accuracy and professionalism
•    Instruct users in the use of library catalog and other basic informational resources
•    May staff the library entry desk, performing bag check and basic circulation tasks.

Materials Processing, may including job duties such as:
•    Receive and prepare new acquisitions and notify patrons of availability
•    Prepare items for shipment to commercial bindery
•    Receive and process items from/to auxiliary libraries; prepare return shipments. Verify shipments of inventory transfers between locations.
•    Create, maintain, delete and process both the print and the online Course Reserve materials

Collection Maintenance, including job duties such as:
•    Screen and evaluate circulated materials for a variety of treatment options (i.e. repair, bindery)
•    Perform searches for missing items
•    Performs and monitors material transfers between locations
•    Performs quality control checks on stacks and maintenance and circulation activities
•    Uses regular reports to perform or delegate searches and identify materials needing record updates or transfers.

Computing Support, including job duties such as:
•    Use on a daily basis common computer programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, Web browsers, and email
•    Monitor library email account and reports
•    Edit department intranet web pages as needed; monitor and update links and information on public-facing pages.
•    Assist users and perform basic troubleshooting for library technology such as photocopiers, printers, microfiche readers, etc.

Building duties, may include job duties such as:
•    Opening and/or closing activities such as managing doors, lights and computers;
•    May perform walk-throughs to monitor or clear the building of all patrons
•    Investigate door alarms, report building or patron incidents to supervisors, Facilities and/or public safety as appropriate.
Supervision, including job duties such as:
•    Train, schedule or supervise student or hourly staff in routine service desk operations or routine collection and stacks maintenance activities.
•    Assist supervisor in hiring or terminating hourly or student staff
•    Communicates and documents assignments, accomplishments and performance issues
•    Reviews and approves time cards

Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience Required
Two-year college degree plus one or more years of experience in an academic library, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
•    Experience with direct interaction with patrons
•    Demonstrated supervisory experience
•    Demonstrated computer literacy with word processing, spreadsheets and communication software such as email
•    Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills
•    Able to apply judgment in choosing procedures and evaluating alternatives
•    Demonstrated ability to perform detailed tasks accurately and efficiently
•    Possess strong communication skills in English
•    Demonstrated ability to be flexible and work well under pressure
•    Record of excellent attendance

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
•    Ability to push a cart weighing up to 650 lbs. that requires an initial push force up to 70 lbs.
•    Ability to work in an environment that is dusty and or moldy
•    Ability to lift books that are up to 10 pounds
•    Ability to kneel and reach
•    Must be able to stand for many hours
