The Torrance Public Library has a temporary employment opportunity for the position of Library Assistant I in the Youth Services Department. The position is a paid position that last for up to 6 months.

Duration: Temporary Appointment (maximum 6 months)

Salary: $18.26/hr

Duties: The Library Assistant I is a full-time position, working out of the Katy Geissert Civic Center Library. This position reports to the Youth Services Supervisor. This position staffs the Youth Services desk typically 2-4 hours each day including two nights per week, and alternate Saturdays working with the Youth Services Supervisor. The current major duties are tracking and compiling statistics and data entry, creating Excel reports, and providing reference and readers advisory services to the public. This person also provides support to the Youth Services Librarians at the branches by distributing program supplies and PR materials. The Library Assistant I may be asked to assist the Library Assistant II with the installation and creation and of displays.

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills to interact with peers, the public, and subordinates

Special collections include the CCA/C Archives, Small Press Traffic Collection, New Materials Library, Hamaguchi Print Collection, and the Artist’s Book Collection. POSITION SUMMARY:
The director will provide leadership, management, and expertise to fulfill the mandate of the CCA Libraries. The director will work in concert with the library staff, faculty, and academic and administrative leaders to ensure that the library resources are used to create the greatest benefit for the CCA community. The director is responsible for the strategic vision and planning of the libraries to ensure the library remains innovative in its provision of resources, systems, and services that best support CCA’s existing and expanding academic programs. While reporting to the CIO, the director maintains a close relationship with faculty and Academic Affairs, collaborating closely with technical and academic staff to craft and implement a shared vision for faculty development and teaching excellence. The director should serve as an advocate for the Libraries and lead discussions about redesigning the Libraries to better serve CCA as a hub for information literacy, instructional technology, faculty development, student engagement, and high impact teaching and learning practices. The director actively leads the library staff, engaging them in the process and unifying the vision and services across the campuses. The director is enthusiastic, innovative and passionate about the role of libraries in a flexible, media-rich, studio-based, hands-on art and design environment.

● Directs the operation of the libraries to include the development, recommendation, implementation and evaluation of policies and procedures.
● Leads and develops library staff, bringing together the libraries with a unified and articulated vision.
● Engages with librarians and faculty in the development of the physical and digital collections to insure they are relevant to the instructional and research needs of the college’s faculty and students.
● Oversees associate director(s) to direct the work of the whole library staff of approximately 10 members as well as student workers.
● Strategically manages the library budget, plans and advocates for current and future resource needs.
● Partners with the CIO and Educational Technology to evolve and grow the library technical infrastructure and digital media services in support of teaching, learning, and scholarship.
40% Strategy & Communications
● Partners with the librarians, faculty, provost, and CIO to develop the library’s strategic vision and plans in correlation with college-wide goals and objectives.
● Champions the design and implementation efforts that emerge from planning to bring the strategic vision to fruition.
● Partners with the associate provost to create and foster ongoing library governance.
● Represents the library services to campus administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni and the professional library community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
MLS degree from an ALA accredited graduate program. Extensive experience in library administration and leadership including development and management of budgets and supervision of staff; superb written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, and proven ability to interact effectively with all levels of the campus and library community; and, strong public service orientation required. Must possess demonstrated excellence in cultivating staff rapport and promoting a positive and productive management style. Should have a demonstrated ability to foster an open, equitable, and diverse academic and/or administrative environment. Must be highly organized and have demonstrated innovative leadership capabilities, ability to problem solve and facilitate meetings, experience delegating and working collectively to achieve positive results, and an ability to perform multiple tasks in an effective manner. Creativity, flexibility, a “start-up” energy, comfort and experience with data and institutional research, and familiarity with and ability to apply technological innovations to the libraries are essential. Knowledge of electronic information tools and library automation systems, including digital resources required. Prefer subject background in the arts and demonstrated knowledge of art resources.

The eligible list that is generated as a result of this recruitment will also be utilized to fill substitute Library Assistant's in various branches of the Yolo County Library System. The salary range for this regular, part-time position at the Archives division is as follows:

$1,274.50 - $1,549.50 per month

This incumbent in this position will serve as support staff for the Records Center. The candidate selected will be primarily responsible for assisting with the pick-up and delivery of records to and from the Records Center; participating in the destruction of appropriate records in accordance with legal retention schedule and destruction guidelines; conducting research and locating documents and records; receiving, researching, and responding to requests for information and records requests; reviewing requests for record releases; pulling, copying and re-filing documents; verifying that all incoming records for storage and destruction are processed in accordance with established Records Center procedures; assisting with the inventory, analysis, and scheduling of County records and forms; receiving and screening visitors and telephone calls; providing information and handling issues that may require sensitivity and the use of sound independent judgment; conducting research, responding to requests for information; m aintaining County records, including assigning location codes and file numbers to all retained documents and records and applying appropriate indexing criteria to records; maintaining and updating records management databases and indexes to track and retrieve records; and maintaining logs of received records. Definition
Under close supervision, performs a variety of routine and repetitive library clerical work; and performs other duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the entry level of the library paraprofessional series. Positions in this class are characterized by the performance of routine clerical duties requiring discretion and judgment in applying procedures and guidelines. Considerable public contact is involved in the explanation of library services and functions.

Essential Functions:

Circulation:

  • Prepares circulation desk for service
  • Works at the circulation desk and represents Yolo County and the Library policies in a positive manner;
  • Provides a high level of customer service to a diverse community in-person, over the telephone, and through email and internet as appropriate;
  • Responds to routine questions from customers; responds to customer complaints and refers difficult problems to appropriate staff person; Issues library cards;
  • Assists customers in requesting books, including inter-library loan and digital downloads;

Job Summary

The Technical Services Librarian is responsible for original and copy cataloging of library materials in all formats. Oversees all technical services, such as serials management, materials processing, repair, binding and preservation. Incumbent must assure that the EDMC philosophy: quality services to clients; development, growth, involvement, and recognition of employees; sound economic principles; and environment which is conducive to innovation, positive thinking and expansion - is considered in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of this position.

Key Job Elements
  • Catalog library materials in MARC format, using AACR2R, LCSH or other schema, as required by the school.
  • Use OCLC or alternative to obtain copy cataloging, do original cataloging, and edit according to local needs.
  • Oversee processing of library materials in all formats, including AV and digital images.
  • Assist Reference Librarian and Director of Library in acquisition of new materials in all formats consistent with overall institutional strategic goals, the library's collection development policy, and annual budget allocations.
  • Review existing collections for continued curriculum relevance. Plan and manage inventory and weeding projects as well as seek out and evaluate new materials for curriculum relevance and suggest purchase as needed.
  • Maintain accurate expenditure records and assist Director of Library in strategic planning and preparation of the annual library budget.
  • Assist in creation of course bibliographies, class and faculty presentations as well as assist patrons in intelligent use of the library's integrated catalog.
  • In the absence of the Reference Librarian, develop, promote and conduct library information literacy classes, using materials in print, non-print and electronic formats.
  • Develop; maintain a library technical service manual.
  • Attend meetings and workshops, and seek additional opportunities for professional development. Other Duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Knowledge:
  • Master's Degree in Library, Information Science, or related from an ALA accredited school.
  • At least 3 to 5 years experience working in a library in a post-secondary institution.
