The City of Santa Barbara is seeking a Senior Librarian to
coordinate and supervise operations primarily at the City Library branches with
supporting activities for the County branches within the Santa Barbara Public
Library (SBPL) system. The position requires strong and proven leadership
skills, prior collaborative work experience in libraries, and forward-thinking
technological vision and skills. The ideal candidate will be an experienced
supervisor with a history of working with vendors, colleagues, and internal
staff to deliver services that anticipate and exceed expectations. A sample of
supervisory responsibilities include: training assigned employees, supporting
employee development, recommending and assisting in the implementation of
Library goals and objectives, establishing schedules and implementing policies
and procedures.
The successful candidate will also bring experience in
"digital leadership". This position will ensure functional
technological environments for the Santa Barbara Public Library and incorporate
emerging technology and technical services trends into strategies which foster
the mission of the Department. Additional responsibilities include overseeing
digital circulation functions for the system, online collection development and
evaluation, project management, and serving as liaison to vendors and community
groups as needed.
This is an exciting opportunity for candidates with strong
leadership skills and experience, gained through hands-on work in a fast-paced,
collaborative and creative library environment.
Must be able to work Monday thru Thursday, 9:00 am to 6:00
pm and Friday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. Availability to work some evening and
weekend hours is required.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Experience/Training:
- Three years of professional library work experience, including two years of prior library supervisory experience.
- Experience in the areas of library technical services and library automation to meet the requirements and responsibilities of the position.
- Library experience in the areas of traditional and digital circulation is preferred, along with experience in online and digital collection development, and managing a collection budget.
- Completion of a Masters of Library Science degree from an accredited library school or equivalent Master's level education such as a Masters of Information Services combined with previous library experience.
Knowledge of:
- Standard technical library principles, practices and procedures of a library section; information retrieval/delivery systems, computer services, emerging technologies and their impact on library collections and services; effective supervisory practices.
Ability to:
- Effectively supervise staff, including how to set effective long and short-term goals based on a good understanding of management practices and establish realistic priorities within available resources;
- effectively problem solve, including how to approach a situation or problem by defining the problem or issue, determine the significance of the problem, collect data, distinguish between relevant and irrelevant data; effectively make inferences about the meaning of the data, and use logic and intuition to arrive at decisions or solutions that achieve the desired outcome;
- effectively manage projects; effectively manage change, including demonstrated support for innovation and for organizational changes needed to improve the organization's effectiveness;
- effectively manage efficient and cost-effective approaches to integrate technology into the workplace and improve program effectiveness;
- establish and maintain productive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
- communicate in a timely, effective, positive and respectful manner; write accurately and concisely, using proper grammatical form.
- Bilingual skills (English and Spanish) are highly desirable for the branch positions.
License Requirements:
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License at the time of appointment
