POSITION OVERVIEW


Under general supervision, performs complex technical duties in library service areas. Main duties include coordination of a major library service area (e.g. circulation, technical services); training and directing classified, temporary employees, and serving as a collegial member of library staff. Assignment may include day or evening hours, location is primarily one campus but may require shifts at both district libraries.

Essential Functions


Provides high level support and oversight in a technical or public service area; may act as a back-up in a different area of the library.

Assists students, staff, and community members by taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel. Explains district policies and procedures to library patrons. Resolves patron issues and complaints or refers to appropriate personnel.

Develops and monitors the bibliographic records for all print, media, and digital collections for the district; resolves discrepancies and directs the deletion of library records for discarded library materials.

Directs the circulation and inventory of library materials for the district; coordinates annual collection inventories; prepares and distributes notices for overdue library materials and unresolved library charges; reconciles the integrated library system with student account files to ensure accurate assessment and collection of library charges and fines.

Creates detailed financial, bibliographic, and statistical reports for the library, campus community, public and governmental agencies. Develops detailed procedural manuals.

Maintains budget records and controls expenditures for library book budget, including other related departmental campus budgets; verifies budget codes and availability of funds.

Initiates ordering, receiving, and invoicing of library materials including books, periodicals, electronic resources, equipment, and supplies for the district. Reconciles shipment, invoice and statement discrepancies and resolves problems and issues.

Acts as circulation and/or technical services liaison with MARINet consortium; initiates and participates in working group discussions online and at in-person meetings. Communicates relevant College of Marin library information to partner libraries (e.g. closure dates, changes in policies or procedures, and system outages). 

Provides direct support to projects that use or interact with shared integrated library system including patron load updates, system updates, and new modules. Troubleshoots system issues and contact MARINet for technical support.

Supports the integration of new technologies and methodologies for library services, applications, and system; participates in the testing and evaluation of emerging technologies.

Maintains and updates library web-based content including library web pages and graphics as directed. Designs or creates library promotional/informational materials as directed.

Oversees and trains temporary employees to assist them in performing their functions. Acts as a lead worker for Library Technician I and II.

OTHER FUNCTIONS


Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
Consult with library director, librarians, and other library technicians in order to support student learning.

Position Summary

Typical Duties

Check in and charge out materials; register new patrons; collect fines, prepare overdue notices, process holds on patron records and clear patron records; handle inter-library loan transactions; set up and maintain the reserve materials collection; oversee re-shelving of library materials; perform tasks necessary to open and/or close library facilities; resolve patron complaints or refer them to appropriate staff members; establish and maintain relationships with outside vendors/suppliers. DESCRIPTION OF POSITION


Diablo Valley College is accepting applications for a part-time, hourly position for two instructors in the Library Technology Certificate Program.

LT-104, “Introduction to Information Organization and Management” is an online assignment for teaching a semester-length 3-unit class (equivalent to 54 lecture hours), which is offered every Fall semester and is a required course for the Certificate. This is an introductory course that teaches the skills necessary to catalog items in a library or other information setting. Students will learn the basic theories, principles, and procedures of bibliographic control, including subject analysis, metadata schemes, physical processing, and database maintenance. Anglo American Cataloging Rules (AACR2), Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress (LC), and other subject heading systems will be covered.

LT-107, “Digital Assets: Tools and Methodologies” is a hybrid assignment for teaching an 8-week 2-unit elective (equivalent to 36 Lecture hours), which has weekly in-person sessions at the Pleasant Hill campus and is offered every other spring semester. This course provides an introduction to the basic processes of creating and managing digital assets including assessing materials, managing files for preservation, and using current digitizing software systems. Access issues, metadata schemes, quality control, scanning equipment and other technologies will also be examined.

Description of Position

The Diablo Valley College Library seeks a dynamic and collaborative Adjunct Open Educational Resources (OER) Librarian to support the college’s efforts to reduce the cost of instructional materials and promote equitable access to education. The OER Librarian will assist faculty in identifying, adopting, adapting, and creating Open Educational Resources and Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) materials. This role involves providing specialized support for the college’s OER initiatives, engaging with faculty and staff, and contributing to the development of sustainable OER practices across disciplines. The OER librarian will also engage in a full range of reference, library instruction, collection development, and outreach activities.

Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:


  • Collaborate with faculty to identify and adopt high-quality OER and ZTC materials for courses.
  • Provide consultations and workshops on OER discovery, copyright, open licensing, and accessibility.

  • Evaluate and Strengthen Online Accessibility for Students
  • Assess and document accessibility needs across student-facing digital learning environments, including the Learning Management System (Canvas) and third-party instructional technologies, to recommend an action plan for improvements and remediation projects.

  • Provide Technical Guidance and Direct Accessibility Support for Instruction
  • Offer hands-on assistance to faculty and staff in designing 508-compliant and inclusive learning experiences (online, hybrid, and career education), with emphasis on Universal Design for Learning.
  • Align course content with recognized rubrics and standards (e.g., California Virtual College Online Course Design Rubric, Section D Accessibility) and participate in workgroups and trainings that support alignment.
  • Provide one-on-one drop-in accessibility support for online career education courses in collaboration with workforce development.

 
Collaborate with Disability Support Services (DSS)


  • Work with DSS to identify student-centered accessibility needs, enhance existing support services, and implement accessibility practices to support students with disabilities in online learning environments.
  • Support Open Educational Resources/Zero Textbook Cost Initiatives
  • Partner with OER/ZTC faculty to offer one-on-one and small group support for accessible OER/ZTC materials.
  • Participate in OER@DVC workgroup.
  • Develop consistent practices, support materials, and technical assistance for creating, reviewing, and scaling accessible OER/ZTC content.

Facilitate Professional Development


  • Conduct workshops on online accessibility including Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and the use of emerging technologies (e.g., AI) for accessibility.
  • Support college-wide trainings in online accessibility and maintain training materials through the learning management system, Canvas.
  • Deliver ongoing coaching for faculty, staff, and administrators to increase adoption of inclusive instructional practices.

Promote Virtual Workplace Accessibility


  • Create and maintain accessible templates and resources for administrative use.
  • Audit and improve accessibility of employee-facing digital environments, including working with campus Marketing Department to train on compliance of student-facing communications.
  • Collaborate with relevant committees and governance structures to implement accessible practices and procurement.

Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, information management, computer science, instructional design, educational development, digital media, or related field.
  • 2 years of experience in accessibility compliance (ADA 508) and associated standards and guidelines, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and/or accessible online course and document design.
  • Experience with WCAG 2.1, ADA, Section 508 compliance, and accessibility evaluation tools.
  • Experience with accessibility evaluation and checking tools such as WAVE, Axe, or similar.
  • Minimum Qualification-Knowledge Of
  • Knowledge of online content platforms and technologies (e.g., Canvas, Microsoft Suite, Adobe Cloud, etc.) and accessibility needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to perform hybrid work (i.e. ability to offer online as well as on-campus trainings, support, office hours, etc.)

Desirable Qualifications


  • Experience collaborating and communicating with and supporting faculty, staff, and administrative professionals in higher education and/or public education setting.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects with a focus on continuous improvement in accessibility.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team.
  • Certification or training in online accessibility standards, experience with assistive technologies and accessibility auditing tools, and experience analyzing and interpreting VPATs, or other vendor-reported accessibility compliance documentation.
  • Familiarity with the California Virtual College’s Online Course Design Rubric, Section D Familiarity with open education best practices, including Creative Commons Licensing. Experience reviewing and remediating online courses, online content, digital documents, etc.

Job Title            Library Media Specialist

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned Dean or Director and in collaboration with the Librarian, perform a variety of technical and public services duties related to the processing, circulation, research and other activities in support of a designated College or Campus library; provide assistance to students and staff for library circulation materials or in a media services center; receive and process requests for media equipment and materials according to established procedures; receive and process requests for interlibrary loans; provide support to the District Distributive Education and media services.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Assist students and staff at media circulation desk; check in and out files, videos, records, cassettes, equipment and other materials; assist students in the proper operation of media equipment and computers as necessary. (E)
