As the center of campus intellectual discovery, the Sacramento State University Library promotes teaching, learning, research, and scholarly communication at the University by integrating the library with student success programs and instruction. One of twenty-three libraries in the California State University System, the Sacramento State University Library holds over 1.4 million volumes, comprised of print and electronic monographs and serials, and is a U.S. Government Depository. The library’s mission is to inspire excellence in teaching, learning, and scholarly activities.

POSITION DETAILS:


We seek a professionally engaged and collaborative librarian to provide guidance on services and policies to the library and to faculty, students, and staff on matters pertaining to scholarly communication, such as institutional repository best practices, faculty profile system support, issues in academic publishing, copyright and fair use, user privacy issues, data management, and the Open Access and Open Education movements.  

JOB DUTIES:


Under the general direction of the Head of Collection Management Services, the Scholarly Communication Librarian:

Develops and implements the Library’s scholarly communication program in coordination with other library departments and library Administration. Creates goals and objectives for a cohesive program.

Leads development and implementation of an education program for library employees on issues of scholarly communication. Advises on how librarians in all subject areas can educate and communicate with their constituencies around issues of scholarly communication.

Develops and implements a program to increase awareness among faculty, researchers, and students about scholarly communication issues in the digital environment, alternative publishing models, public-access requirements for grant-funded projects, Open Access, and Open Education.

Promotes the use of the campus’s institutional repository/faculty profile system: Sac State Scholars. Creates and maintains support documentation, policies, and workflow guidelines for the institutional repository. Selects content to include in the repository that is representative of Sac State and showcases the excellence of the university, including high-level undergraduate work.

Develops and maintains a broad network of partners, e.g., the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), Information Resources and Technology (IRT), the Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development (ORIED), Division of Inclusive Excellence, students, faculty and staff, California State University (CSU) system-wide offices, and the scholarly community to inform, support, and advance the library’s scholarly communication programs and goals.

Stays informed of, and shares with the library and university staff and faculty, national and international trends and developments in scholarly communication, including legislation, changes in intellectual property rights, commercial and academic/research scholarly publishing, and information technologies that affect access and preservation of scholarly information.

Leads library participation in current and newly developed initiatives that encourage and enable faculty to manage their own intellectual property rights, and improve access to published research. Establishes mechanisms to assist faculty with publishing choices, data management plans, licensing agreements, and fair use of copyrighted works as users of information.

Establishes a means of analyzing and evaluating the progress of the library’s scholarly communication outreach and education program.

Helps faculty determine the impact of their scholarship, through both traditional and alternative measurements.

The Scholarly Communication Librarian contributes to library-wide decision-making and serves on library committees as needed.  

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • American Library Association accredited Master’s degree or accredited international equivalent, or accredited advanced degree in a field relevant to the position conferred by December 31, 2022. 
  • At least two years of professional experience in librarianship, research, publishing, law, or another relevant field. 
  • Strong understanding of scholarly communication trends in a diverse academic or research environment
  • Evidence of inclusive and equitable leadership, collaboration, and initiative.
  • Effective oral, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  •  Experience with outreach, marketing, and/or promotion of services relevant to scholarly communication.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of intellectual property rights, Open Access, institutional repositories, accessibility, and related issues as they affect the creation and dissemination of scholarship
  • Understanding of the research or creative scholarship process in higher education.

  • Experience with institutional repositories, faculty profile systems and/or data management plans
  • Experience preparing and delivering instruction to a diverse population relevant to scholarly communication.

  • Advanced degree in subject area relevant to the position.

General Purpose


Under general supervision, performs routine library support functions; assists students, faculty, staff and the public in locating, receiving and using library resources in a variety of formats; assists full-time staff and Librarians with acquisitions, periodicals and cataloging functions following established procedures; accurately creates and maintains detailed library records; and performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Assists students, faculty, staff and the public in identifying and locating library materials within the District and through the interlibrary loan process; explains basic library policies and procedures; directs patrons with reference and research questions to faculty staff on duty. 

Provides basic assistance to patrons at the circulation desk; circulates library materials; assists patrons in the use of computers, media equipment, photocopiers and other library equipment; accepts payments for fees and fines, posts payments; generates new and maintains existing library patron records; answers phones and email inquiries.  

Processes new books, periodicals and other library materials for circulation and reserve collections; checks orders, covers, stamps and bar codes and labels books; repairs torn pages and loose hinges as needed; contacts suppliers regarding errors/omissions in shipments as directed. 

Processes intra-District library loan requests following established procedures; explains interlibrary loan procedures and policies to library users; processes and circulates borrowed materials and processes requests from other libraries.  

Performs library opening and closing functions following established procedures; turns on/off lights and computers, restocks supplies and unlocks/locks library entrances; ensures money drawers are sufficiently prepared with change each day; secures cash drawers at closing; calculates and prepares deposit forms.  

Responds to and troubleshoots user problems with copiers and printers and other library equipment; contacts appropriate technical support personnel; reports maintenance and building issues following established procedures; advises supervisor of major facility and equipment problems. 

Assists Librarians and provides clerical support services as needed; prepares reports; processes mail; calculates, analyzes and maintains inventory spreadsheets, records and files on circulation materials including books, textbooks, tablets, laptops and other materials; updates library ledger involving fees and print card money collection.  

Maintains organized access to library materials by accurately shelving, shelf-reading and shifting books and other library materials, searching for lost or missing items and cleaning shelving areas as needed.  

Processes multimedia items and prepares materials for circulation; assists with the circulation of electronic short-term reserved materials including calculators, iPads and laptops; ensures borrowers sign required contracts and are fully aware of the limited checkout time for these materials; cleans and charges items as they are returned. 

Prepares requisitions for library materials and supplies; maintains various spreadsheets on items purchased and provides statistical information as needed. 

Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of historically minoritized groups and participates in professional development activities to increase cultural competency to enhance equity-minded practices within the District.
