Job Description

LACC is seeking applicants for a full-time, 10-month, tenure track faculty Librarian position to begin in the Fall 2021 semester. The assignment may include working on campus, online, offsite, and/or evening and weekends.  This position will be part of a collaborative team that provides information resources and reference assistance to students, faculty, and staff.  The ideal candidate will be tech-savvy and current in the discipline with a passion for information literacy and with a demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse student population.

MINIMUM/REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s in library science, library and information science;

OR the equivalent, AND

A demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff, and students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

(Duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following):

  • Provide reference service to students, faculty and staff (in-person and online).
  • Conduct library instruction sessions in collaboration with faculty.
  • Develop and coordinate research skills workshops.
  • Actively promote the use of library resources and services to students, faculty and staff, including social media and website updates.
  • Plan and execute outreach programs to various teaching disciplines, the College’s Pathways and to the community.
  • Implementation of inclusive learning environments and curricula that welcome and engage all students, incorporating instructional technologies to improve student learning.
  • Contribute to collection development activities, including selection and deselection and recommending online and print sources for purchase by the library.
  • Provide input in the selection of library’s electronic resources.
  • Design and produce curricular materials, research guides, information-literacy tutorials and other resources in print, web-based, and multimedia formats.
  • Actively participate in the development and assessment of learning outcomes, including analysis and the use of results to improve student learning and access to resources.
  • Assess and promote the use of emerging technologies for library services and operations.

POSITION PURPOSE:


Reporting to the Executive Vice President of Instruction and Student Services, the Dean provides vision, leadership, and administrative oversight for Library Services and the Student Support and Success Centers (academic support programs including the Teaching and Learning Center, the Pass the Torch program, and the Science Technology Engineering and Math Center). The Dean directs, organizes, and manages division-wide educational planning and program development in accordance with the missions, goals and objectives of the college and division. The Dean facilitates communication and support between the departments within the Learning Resources Division and other divisions and departments across the campus. The Dean is responsible for the various processes necessary to provide high-quality instructional support to a variety of programs across the campus. Additionally, the Dean would serve as the evening administrator on the college campus, and the successful candidate will have a schedule that includes evening hours after 5pm. 

NATURE and SCOPE:


The Dean of Learning Resources supervises Librarians (full and part-time), Library Technicians, Program Coordinators, part-time faculty tutors, and faculty coordinators of the STEM and TLC student support centers, and the Division Administrative Assistant.

The Dean supports, implements, and advances the college’s commitment to equity, multicultural education, and social justice in all aspects of employment and education, staffing, curriculum, programs, and services.

Due to the campus-wide nature of the division, the Dean will need to work with instructional divisions, student services, finance and educational resources and FHDA central services to achieve institutional goals. 

KEY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:


The following duties and responsibilities are typical but not limited to the following:

  • Develop, implement, and promote programs, resources, and services for Library Services and the Student Success Centers.  
  • Work with the faculty and staff in Library and Student Success Centers to implement effective pedagogies, and methodologies in their respective programs, includes working with faculty and staff in the division to ensure that program review ,learning outcomes, and curriculum are managed effectively and efficiently.
  • Facilitate pedagogically sound growth of Library Services and the Student Success Center to promote student engagement and success.  
  • Develop, implement, and manage the Division budget; monitor categorical and foundation accounts.
  • Implement personnel policies and practices.  
  • Supervise and evaluate faculty and staff in the Library and Student Success Centers. 
  • Support, implement, and promote compliance with the District’s Diversity and Equal Opportunity Plan in all aspects of employment and education; encourage cultural and ethnic diversity in staffing, curriculum, programs, and services.
  • Seek additional sources of funding for the Division when appropriate and necessary.
  • Develop and implement Divisional policies and procedures.
  • Administer regular program reviews and provide curriculum coordination and supervision.
  • Serve on appropriate college and district committees, participate in governance meetings.
  • Assure compliance with the District’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program by providing motivation, incentives, and discipline to assigned staff; maintain a safe work environment, enforcing safe work practices, reporting and investigating accidents, maintaining necessary documentation, and requiring employees to receive mandated training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Master’s in Library, Information, Sciences or a Master’s in Education or a Master’s in any discipline being tutored: Math, English, ESL, Computer Science, Reading, Writing, Science, Engineering.
  • One year of administrative experience managing at least one of the following areas: Library or Tutorial Support/Supplemental Learning Program.
  • Minimum of three years of administrative experience or increasing leadership responsibilities in an educational setting.
  • Experience in developing programs that promote enrollment growth, retention and student success, library services or academic support services including tutorial support.
  • Experience in managing and leading diverse stakeholders, including team building, cultural sensitivity, conflict resolution, and team projects.
  • Knowledge of and experience with shared governance principles; recognizing the importance of the democratic process and fostering open communication among division, programs and services.
  • Ability to manage complex budgets including categorical funds.

JOB SUMMARY:


The faculty and staff of the Library are committed to student success, by providing a space where students have access to resources to support their academic and personal growth. The Library Technician will work directly with students, faculty, and staff to promote student success and equity. This position will include, but not be limited to, the following duties: interface directly with students (in person, by phone, and online) to help locate/select/circulate library materials and navigate the library’s services; interpret and resolve questions and concerns regarding library policies and procedures, including liability for damaged or lost materials; develop and implement processes to maintain a diverse collection of reserves material, including electronics; interface with faculty and division deans to identify and order instructional materials for library reserves; collaborate with library colleagues to determine and implement library policies and procedures; develop, communicate, and implement procedures for efficiencies in the circulation/reserves area; use the library’s computer- and web-based systems to maintain records and generate reports; and recruit, hire, train, and supervise student workers.  
This position reports to the Dean of Language Arts and the Learning Resource Center; the position is located primarily at the Foothill College main campus but also includes shifts at the Sunnyvale Center. 

DEFINITION  


Under direction, performs a variety of complex library support services; provides direct service and assistance to library patrons by reviewing and resolving issues and concerns; oversees, trains, schedules, and coordinates the work of student workers; prepares complex records and reports; and performs related duties as assigned.

Receives direction from an assigned supervisor or manager.  Exercises no supervision of staff.   

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS 


This is a journey-level classification that is responsible for overseeing and performing complex support services for assigned functional area, as well as providing work direction and training to student workers.  Positions are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative.  Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

  • Directs and instructs students and staff at the circulation desk, reserves, and reference desks and directs library patrons to appropriate locations and/or staff; responds to difficult and complex conflict resolution, inquiries, questions, and requests for information; interprets and applies regulations, policies, procedures, systems, rules, and precedents in response to inquiries and concerns from patrons; answers calls and resolves questions and problems.  
  • Directs library patrons in use of library facilities and equipment including study room, computer lab, online catalog system, copiers, printers, magazine index, and the internet. 
  • Instructs patrons on the use of a variety of computer hardware, software, and web-based systems found in the library; evaluates, responds to, and troubleshoots problems; generates reports and installs system upgrades as needed.

  • Acquires new print and non-print instructional materials, including periodicals, by checking for duplication and similar materials in the current collection before ordering; researching materials and vendors to determine best prices and terms and conditions; selecting materials and vendors; and creating contracts; orders materials and tracks order status; receives shipments; processes invoices for payment; participates in planning and monitors budgets; prepares budget reports. 
  • Catalogs and processes new instructional materials; maintains library catalog; selects, edits, exports, and verifies a matching bibliographic record using the WorldCat database or creates original bibliographic record; imports records into the library catalog. 
  • Verifies authority headings and classification using Library of Congress Subject Headings and other necessary resources. 
  • Re-catalogs and reclassify materials as needed; corrects cataloging errors, call number conflicts, and labeling issues; deletes records for obsolete items in catalog and removes items from shelves for processing out of the collection and appropriate disposal; deletes library holdings for extant copies.  
  • Processes interlibrary loan requests for both lending and borrowing materials; performs search online; places requests with participating libraries; notifies patrons about availability of requested items; receives and distributes requested materials; processes renewals; and returns borrowed items to lending libraries. 
  • Prepares circulating materials for use; prints spine labels; inserts anti-theft devices; applies labels, label protectors, book tape, dust jacket covers, laminate, etc.   
  • Manages periodical collection and daily newspaper subscriptions by receiving, logging, labelling, and checking in magazines and newspapers and weeding periodical collection annually to reflect holdings; reviews annual renewal requests from vendors, prepares invoices, and removes discontinued titles and adds new titles; files claims for newspapers not delivered.   
  • Assesses damaged books and resource materials; cleans, mends, covers, and repairs damaged books and other instructional materials; assists in the discarding of old books and materials according to established policies and procedures; removes holdings as appropriate; deletes discarded titles from database as appropriate. 
  • Processes donation of books or other materials according to library guidelines; communicates with donors regarding drop off; issues receipts.  
  • Writes procedures and makes recommendations for assigned service areas; implements library policies and procedures. 
  • Participates in program reviews; researches and provides data and statistics; makes recommendations on budget needs.   
  • Identifies and reports safety and maintenance concerns; opens and closes library daily.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 


Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.  Standing in and walking between work areas is frequently required.  Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment.  Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and reach to perform assigned duties, as well as push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information.  Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 25 pounds with the use of proper equipment.  Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals on a case-by-case basis.
