The Department of Information Studies of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSE&IS) at UCLA invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of information studies specializing in Library Studies (LS). The Department of Information Studies’ LS specialization focuses on the role of libraries and the profession of librarianship, and stresses the core values of the profession: access, confidentiality and privacy, democracy, education and lifelong learning, intellectual freedom, preservation, professionalism, the public good, service, and social responsibility. The successful applicant will have research and teaching interests in information studies that relate to any aspect of librarianship. These interests might include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

• libraries in the Information Age, including their roles in the political, cultural, and information economies;

The Department offers the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree with specializations in archival studies, informatics, library studies, media archival studies, and rare books / print and visual culture. JOB SUMMARY


Under general supervision, responsible for stacks maintenance operations and supervision of 30-40 students in the Operations Unit for the UC Davis Library. Hire, train, and evaluate student assistants for the unit, and assign work, monitor performance, attendance, and provide follow-up training/corrective action/referral.

Act as Lead for stacks maintenance operations at all three UC Davis Library Davis campus locations; Shields Library, Physical Sciences and Engineering Library, and Carlson Health Sciences Library, covering over 2 million volumes in over 150,000 sq. ft. of collection space. Manage the development of library support for retention and ‘first-year’ initiatives. Serve as Library liaison for the College of Letters and Sciences (COLS). Collaborate with faculty research, scholarship and program development. Facilitate library instruction, information and literacy assessment for graduate and undergraduate students both online and in-person. Contribute in the library collection development and engage with users to understand information needs and service expectations. Provide discipline-specific research consultations, as required. Corroborate on library team initiatives such as library base for new students and students at risk.

Essential Functions


Manages the development for library sustenance to students at risk and ‘first-year’ initiatives.

Develops library instruction plans to enhance understanding of high impact best practices for online instruction and information literacy pedagogy differentiated for students at risk.

Provides on-line and in-person instruction for graduate and undergraduate education programs.

Serves as Subject Matter Expert (SME) in tutorial scripts, storyboards and other instructional development resources.

Designs course guides to supplement library instruction with a focus on signature assignments with library research.

Serves as Library Liaison for COLS. Contributes in school committees, meetings, faculty proposals and training on library plans, resources and services.

Sustains faculty research and program development in library collections to support the teaching, learning and researching needs of students and faculty.

Collaborates with library team on initiatives such as guide review, outreach, tutorials, events and workshops as necessary.

Provides reference services such as staffing the Library Help Desk and answering reference questions (Ask Us, RefDesk, phone, text and through email).

Must be able to work a varied work schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Hire, train and develop up to 5 staff team members.


REQUIREMENTS


Education & Experience


Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Systems or related field, required; and, four (4) years’ progressively responsible leadership experience in a Library, preferable within a higher education environment; to include:

Four (4) years’ experience answering reference questions on-line and in-person while collaborating with individual faculty members on information literacy outcomes and instruction; or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Library Assistant reports to the Club Librarian/Archivist, and supports the work of the Librarian and members.

Job Duties 


Scanning historic records, including photos, scripts and other Club memorabilia; documenting the progress of digitization projects.

Verifying accurate bibliographic information for new books recommended by Club members; locating and collating published book reviews; and preparing a preliminary monthly report to be edited by the Librarian and distributed to the members of the Book Selection Subcommittee.

Assisting the Club Librarian by tracking new book orders and deliveries, and preparing books for shelving and circulation.

The Library Assistant should be proficient in general office skills (DB/Text Works, Microsoft Office, and Epson scanning equipment and software). The successful applicant will possess superior data entry and record-keeping skills; will be able to perform detailed responsibilities accurately and quickly; and should be able to demonstrate an eagerness to practice the elements of library-bibliographical work. Business attire is required.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Summary

Under limited supervision, drive business processes to acquire library resources in all formats (print, audiovisual, and electronic) for the National University Library System (NULS). Manage vendor relationships to ensure critical business results, oversee ordering and receipt of library resources and maintain current knowledge of software used for acquisitions data. Assist with budget preparation regarding collection development. Provide guidance and training to less-experienced staff.

Essential Functions

  • Provides expertise necessary to ensure the library program is aligned with mission, goals and business objectives, including leading the business processes to acquire library resources for general collections.
  • Collaborates with faculty, instructors and administrators to ensure books, videos, special collections and other library resources are on-hand.
  • Works directly with publishers and producers; monitors status of orders to track vendor performance and identify non-fulfillment of orders. Teams up with the Collection Development Librarian to resolve problems with orders and to ensure proper selection timelines.
  • Connects with University General Counsel on legal review of license agreements and with Accounting as necessary for purchases and various issues.
  • Participates in the recruiting, hiring, training and guidance of part-time staff.
  • Partners with library leadership to prepare the Library’s proposed baseline budget and resolves budget issues relating to collection development. Monitors the baseline budget to discover anomalies that could adversely affect the budget.
  • Maintains working knowledge of the software used to build and maintain the acquisitions data in the library management system. Develops training materials, and tests software when new versions are issued.
  • Contributes in the design and execution of projects to clear lesser used materials from the collections.
  • Partakes in planning and coordinating the Library’s book displays.

Supervisory Responsibilities 

Supervises 1 part-time staff that works 50% time (20 hours/week) which takes 5-10% of this position’s time.

REQUIREMENTS

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Library Science or related field; or two-year Library Science Certificate; and, three (3) years of technical service experience in an academic library; and,
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience with a culturally diverse student assistant population, preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
