Definition and Class Characteristics
  • The Library is currently recruiting for a Library Technician who will manage the Collaborative Technology Center (CTC). The position involves a high level of comfort with technology, including troubleshooting problems and updating computers, as well as developing new technology classes, coordinating the monthly class schedule, and teaching a few classes each month.

  • Under supervision, performs administrative support work for the County Library System; coordinates the day-to-day activities of a library program or operation; provides positive customer service to library patrons; performs various responsible clerical, administrative and maintenance duties as required to maintain the efficient operation of the library; and performs related work as required.

  • Library Technician is the paraprofessional level of the library support classifications.  Incumbents perform the most difficult and complex library support work requiring technical training and experience

  • The Library Technician classification is distinguished from the Library Assistant III by the higher level of responsibility exercised and expertise required and is distinguished from the Librarian I in that the latter job class functions at a professional level of performance and possesses a broader knowledge base per educational requirements. The Library Technician classification requires knowledge of system-wide library policies and procedures and the ability to successfully apply that knowledge to assigned operations and programs.

Examples of Duties

Essential:
  • Organizes, coordinates and participates in the daily activities of the branch library and the county wide library system
  • Coordinates resource sharing and inter-library loan services
  • Schedules deliveries of books, materials and other resources to branch libraries
  • Assists in maintaining efficient and uniform circulation procedures

Job Summary

Major Duties

  • Monitors the Innovative database for accuracy; proofreads online input done by subordinate staff; conducts quality control evaluations of data base; performs final quality control check before new materials are released to the public.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Arts degree including or supplemented by courses in library sciences or a related field and;
  • Three (3) years of experience performing paraprofessional library work in a public library, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Position and Duties:
We are seeking new Librarians to join our team and change the lives of those we serve!  We are currently looking to fill part time openings and add to our on-call pool of librarians. The ideal candidate for these positions will understand, support, practice and promote the San José Way of library innovation and the Mission, Vision, & Values statements of the City of San José and the San José Public Library; demonstrate leadership and a commitment to active customer service; have knowledge of current library technology and trends; have experience working with a diverse community and staff; and enjoy working in a fast-paced, innovative team environment. 

Our librarians are community leaders, using their professional skills in finding ways to keep the library in the forefront of providing the information, lifelong learning, and recreational diversions people need to lead better lives.  The job description enumerates the range of duties expected, but above all we are looking for flexible, service-oriented, friendly, and smart librarians, proud of their profession and wanting to make a difference in their community. 

Librarians are responsible for performing a variety of professional librarian duties. This may include: providing direct assistance to library customers in the location of information and library materials; serving as a resource for children, young adults, adults and library staff; conducting library tours, giving book talks, and planning, promoting, or presenting other programs; working with community groups to promote understanding, use and support of library service activities; analyzing, interpreting and answering reference questions, and providing reader's advisory information; supervising, leading or training the work of a clerical and technical staff as assigned; assuming responsibility for a facility or a section as assigned; selecting and managing collections; cataloging; web development and design.  These positions will include evenings and weekend shifts.
