Summary Description:  
  • Under direction from assigned library supervisory or management staff, performs a variety of complex technical and paraprofessional duties in support of various sections/functions of the library; assumes responsibility for the day-to-day operations of assigned functional area such as circulation or technical processing/acquisitions; catalogs library materials; and provides information and assistance to library patrons.

Duties and Responsibilities        
  • Recommend goals and objectives for assigned function/service area of the library; assist in the development and implementation of library policies and procedures for assigned functions; make recommendations for improved services in assigned areas of responsibility.      
     
  • Under the direction of management/supervisory staff, select, train, supervise, and monitor the performance of full and part-time staff, student aides, student help, and volunteers; assign and review work; provide guidance and respond to questions; participate in disciplining processes for students and volunteers.
  • Oversee, provide lead supervision, and participate in the activities and operations of the library circulation desk; adjust staff work schedules to cover absences and provide adequate staff support; ensure patrons are served quickly and courteously and that daily functions of circulation are performed in accordance with established library policies and procedures; direct related activities including those related to the payment of fines; oversee the operations and maintenance of the library circulation computer system.
  • Oversee, provide lead supervision, and participate in the activities and operations of the library technical process/acquisitions function; order, receive, and process to shelf-ready print and non-print library materials; prepare reports regarding materials added and deleted from the collection.
  • Oversee assigned operations during assigned hours including to oversee computer commons area, copy service, reserve, periodical, study areas, and stack areas; maintain library atmosphere; resolve student problems.
  • Catalog library print and non-print materials; search and edit bibliographic information for items on established databases; download bibliographic information; edit records for local policy and correct cataloging; perform descriptive/copy cataloging and original cataloging; may perform subject cataloging; maintain individual item records in library database; perform necessary authority work for names, series, and subjects used as access points to ensure uniformity of entries in catalog; maintain library materials and catalogs; resolve conflicts and errors on bibliographic record; perform cataloging related projects.
  • Administer integrated library computer system (ILS) for the campus; create log-in accounts for new staff; manage configuration settings; assist other staff and faculty with use of the ILS; contact vendor as required to resolve problems.
  • Review new publications and collection materials; recommend the selection of materials for acquisition and/or disposition as appropriate.
  • Organize, maintain, and index a variety of reference materials including special collections, periodicals, indexes, atlas, and other materials.
  • Oversee and participate in the compilation of daily, monthly and yearly library activity reports and statistics including those relating to material circulation and usage; manage and report data for annual reports to state and federal agencies.
  • Provide public assistance/information; respond to in-person and telephone requests for library materials, services, and information; assist library patrons in routine information requests and answer directional questions; research routine reference questions; refer library patrons to other agencies if appropriate.
  • Participate in the interlibrary loan process; provide direct service to students; request books not owned by the District; ship requested books to other libraries.
  • Oversee and participate in processes to send customers’ names to outside collection agencies for past due accounts; monitor, update, and analyze customer accounts for accuracy before sending names to collection agency; clear payments and disputes with collection agency.    
         
  • Assist patrons with library equipment; provide instruction on the use of library computers; troubleshoot problems with copiers and provides cash refunds for problems with copiers, printers, and AV equipment.
             
  • Oversee and participate in general library maintenance functions; oversee and participate in evaluating and maintaining the orderliness of shelved materials including to read shelves, clean shelves, and shift books; pull and route materials in need of mending, binding, repairing, or discarding; mend materials; assist with annual inventory of library materials.
               
  • Assist with various projects and special assignments as assigned.
  • Perform library opening duties; turn on computers for student and staff use; test ILS and troubleshoot/resolve problems; collect, stamp, and date daily newspapers and contact newspaper vendors if daily newspapers were not delivered as necessary; retrieve books from outside book drop; run reports; unlock main entrance doors.
  • Perform library closing duties as assigned; play closing tape; secure money; turn off equipment; ensure all items are returned; clear building of patrons; turn off lights.  
            
  • Serve as liaison between the library and campus maintenance department for HVAC, plumbing, and lighting problems as well as other environmental complaints; report problems to ensure building is free of health and safety hazards; request maintenance of broken items and furniture.        
  • May maintain library website; update website information as necessary; create links to new databases and remove obsolete links.    
         
  • May assist and provide back-up support to other library staff and in other areas of the library.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings, conferences, and workshops; maintain awareness of new trends and developments in library science; incorporate new developments as appropriate.

Education and Experience Guidelines:   
  • Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Education/Training:        
  • Equivalent to two years of college level course work in library science or a related field.

Experience:       
  • Four years of increasingly responsible technical and clerical library.

 Work Environment:       
  • Work is performed in a library; subject to noise from office equipment operation; frequent interruptions and contact in person with students, staff, and others. Positions may be required to work some weekend and evening hours; may be required to adjust work schedule to meet library needs.


Physical Demands:         
  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a library; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate library and office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
