Salary: $23.41 - $31.30 (hourly); $4,059 - $5,427 (monthly);

The Benicia Public Library seeks a dynamic individual to
perform a wide variety of professional duties with special emphasis on
children’s services. Under supervision of the Head of Youth Services Librarian,
duties include reference service to patrons of all ages (approximately 25% of
this position’s time is spent at the public service desk), reader’s advisory,
collection development, storytelling, class visits, children’s programming,
classifying materials, and working with members of the community. This position
has responsibility for using independent judgment, organization and
administrative skills.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
- Under general supervision, to perform library work; to assist public in use of the City Library; and to perform related duties as required.
- The incumbent in this position serves under the direction of the Head of Youth Services and must possess sound knowledge of the principles, practices and philosophy of public library work.
- This position has responsibility for using independent judgment, organization and administrative skills. The position requires working with the public of all ages, answering their library needs.
- The position will be given a specific area to develop, such as Children's or Reference Services, to include a program of service and collection of appropriate materials.
Representative Duties / Qualifications:
- Provides reader's advisory service to the public; answers reference questions, using reference and circulating collection.
- Plans, organizes, publicizes and directs programs for a specific target group, ie. children or young adults.
- Coordinates the acquisition, cataloging, classification, circulation, distribution, weeding, care and preservation of library materials for a specific area of concern.
- Participates in selecting books, audio visual materials and other materials for inclusion in collection and develops programs to stimulate reader interest.
- Budgets the funds needed for their assigned area.
- Markets the collection in assigned area of concern.
- Prepares reading lists and bibliographies.
- Creates and presents programs for assigned area, including booktalking, storytelling, etc.
- May be responsible for outreach into the community (class visits, talks to a service club, etc.).
- May be assigned as Library liaison to an outside organization.
- Assists in the development of Library goals, objectives, policies and procedures.
- Responds to citizen complaints and inquiries, serves on professional boards and committees and other job related meetings.
- Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
- General knowledge of the principles, practices and philosophy of public library work.
- Organization, services and equipment including applicable information technology
- Information sources, bibliographies, reference materials, and classification systems.
- Collection development, including materials selection and basic catalog procedures
- Techniques of customer service and patron assistance
- Principles and practices of organization, administration, budgeting, personnel management and supervisory techniques.
- Computers - both library specific software & general PC operations.
And
Ability to:
- Plan, organize, direct and coordinate the activities of a library program.
- Represent the library in a public relations capacity.
- Analyze and respond to community needs and requests.
- Develop and conduct special programs.
- Communicate effectively with all age levels.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the general public and other City staff.
- Spanish speaking skills and knowledge of specific library computer applications are desirable qualifications.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
- Any combination equivalent to experience and education that
could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying.
A typical way to acquire the knowledge and abilities would be:
- Experience - Librarian I:
- None required.
- Experience - Librarian II:
- Two years of responsible experience performing duties
similar to those of a Librarian I with the City of Benicia
And - Education - Librarian I/II:
- Graduation from an accredited Graduate School of Librarianship with a Master's degree in Library Science.
