Education and Experience Required
  • Equivalent to an Associate of Art or Associate of Science degree from an accredited college or university and three years of experience performing varied library service work.

Definition and Class Characteristics
  • The Library is currently recruiting for a Library Technician who will manage the Collaborative Technology Center (CTC). The position involves a high level of comfort with technology, including troubleshooting problems and updating computers, as well as developing new technology classes, coordinating the monthly class schedule, and teaching a few classes each month.

  • Under supervision, performs administrative support work for the County Library System; coordinates the day-to-day activities of a library program or operation; provides positive customer service to library patrons; performs various responsible clerical, administrative and maintenance duties as required to maintain the efficient operation of the library; and performs related work as required.

  • Library Technician is the paraprofessional level of the library support classifications.  Incumbents perform the most difficult and complex library support work requiring technical training and experience

  • The Library Technician classification is distinguished from the Library Assistant III by the higher level of responsibility exercised and expertise required and is distinguished from the Librarian I in that the latter job class functions at a professional level of performance and possesses a broader knowledge base per educational requirements. The Library Technician classification requires knowledge of system-wide library policies and procedures and the ability to successfully apply that knowledge to assigned operations and programs.

Examples of Duties

Essential:
  • Organizes, coordinates and participates in the daily activities of the branch library and the county wide library system
  • Coordinates resource sharing and inter-library loan services
  • Schedules deliveries of books, materials and other resources to branch libraries
  • Assists in maintaining efficient and uniform circulation procedures
  • Assists library patrons in the use of library materials and resources; re­searches and refers patrons requesting help on various subjects such as local history and genealogy; checks materials out to the public at the circulation desk
  • Oversees the operation of PC-based systems and networks and requests technical support, as needed; upgrades electronic equipment used in the library; designs, updates and maintains library website
  • Develops and improves the library's online catalog via OCLC (online catalog library center) and Sirsi/Dynix software
  • Prepares displays and plans programs in support of assigned library opera­tions/facilities
  • Reviews, evaluates and recommends the purchase of books, tapes, periodicals and other library materials
  • Maintains records and prepares reports relative to assigned library operations and/or programs
  •  Important:
  • May direct the work of assigned staff; assists in training staff in new technologies

Knowledge and Skills Required

Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of library administration
  • Basic supervisory principles and practices
  • Principles and practices of library technology, including on-line databases and CD/ROMs utilized in library work
  • Customer service techniques and etiquette
  • Basic budget preparation methods and practices
  • Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Principles and practices of work safety

Skill in:
  • Identifying and utilizing library resources, including performing detailed and technical library support work
  • Utilizing and applying the Dewey Decimal Classification System
  • Maintaining a current knowledge of books and authors
  • Planning, and coordinating the work of assigned staff
  • Establishing and maintaining priorities and objectives for self and others
  • Understanding instructions and communicating clearly, concisely, and effectively in both verbal and written forms
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work
  • Typing accurately and at a rate sufficient to effectively perform assigned duties
  • Operating and maintaining standard office machines, equipment, and computer hardware and software, as designated
 Possession of a valid driver's license within 30 days of hire.
