Position Summary:
Under general supervision, perform a variety of specialized technical library duties involving direct contact with students, staff, faculty, and community members; perform library work requiring basic to complex understanding of library principles, practices and procedures, and may assist within the different areas of Learning Resources and perform other related work as required.

The Library Technician class is distinguished from other classes in that incumbents are expected to assist in the overall operation of the District's Library/Learning Resource Center. Incumbents are expected to know and understand Library principles and practices and perform basic to complex paraprofessional library work with limited supervision. Incumbents independently apply basic to complex college library policies and procedures. The Level III Technician serves in a lead capacity for the department.

Incumbents in the Library Technician series support Student Learning outcomes by assisting students to locate and use the Library and Learning Resources relevant to their collegiate assignments.  

Education: 
- Two years of college level coursework and a Library Technology Certificate (or be able to obtain a certificate in the first two years of employment);
- Associate degree preferred.

Experience: 
- Three years of recent, increasingly difficult library/media technical experience, preferably including: Experience in the ordering, receipt, processing, and circulation of library materials; Possession of a library technology certificate or the equivalent;
- One year of general clerical experience may be substituted for one year of required library experience.

Knowledge of: 
- Library/media terminology and standard library/media practices and techniques;
- Standard library classification, filing, and cataloging systems;
- General types and uses of library and audiovisual materials and equipment;
- Standard procedures for cataloging, processing and circulating library and audiovisual materials;
- Office methods and equipment;
- Audiovisual equipment care and use;
- Computer programs necessary for record keeping and databases;
- Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation.

Ability to: 
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties;
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
- Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.

Essential Functions:
Any one position may not include all the essential functions listed, nor do all the listed essential functions include all tasks, which may be found in the positions of the class.

Level I, II, and III 
- Open and close Library daily;
- Assist patrons, answer and screen telephone calls;
- Operate cash register and reconcile receipts at the end of the day;
- Assist in planning and carry out department procedures;
- Utilize the Integrated Library System (ILS) to facilitate the circulation of library materials;
- Utilize the ILS to locate and retrieve books and materials;
- Shelve books and shelf read using Library of Congress Classification System;
- Create library accounts for students, staff, faculty, and community patrons;
- Maintain and troubleshoot copiers/printers;
- Repair books and periodicals;
- Compose correspondence independently and from general direction;
- Inform Library users of rules of conduct as necessary and enforce those rules when appropriate;
- Monitor functionality of Library equipment and schedule repairs and maintenance as needed;
- Perform other related duties as required.

Level II and III 
- Utilize the ILS to process new and/or added reserve materials with brief entry cataloging;
- Monitor required textbooks, class schedules, and correspond with faculty to ensure class reserves are accurate and available for students;
- Monitor the circulation/reserve materials and recommend new reserve acquisitions;
- Monitor overdue materials through the ILS and prepare notices to collect fines and clear student records;
- Post and clear library debts in both the Library and Banner student accounts;
- Correspond with periodical, vendor, and local newspaper distributors for claims of missing or damaged issues/articles;
- Maintain Periodical Holding list in HTML and maintain current and back issue magazines and newspaper for public access in the ILS;
- Prepare and maintain periodical and microform statistics;
- Order and maintain department operating supplies and inventory;
- Process and grade tests for the Library Research Workbook;
- Maintain department statistics and records for reporting purposes;
- Assist in training student library assistant(s).

Level III 
- Act in a lead capacity to assign and coordinate the work delegated to the Level I and II Technicians and Library Assistants, as approved by Director;
- Interview, hire, train and plan and oversee the work of Library Student Assistants including periodic performance evaluations;
- Serve as technical support for the Library ILS, including system configuration and access control;
- Update and maintain the ILS user database; load new or updated student accounts from Admissions & Records to the library system and review and resolve problems;
- Prepare statistics reports and provide use statistics to the Director;
- Serve as Circulation Department liaison to Computer Services and Student Services;
- Maintain circulation records to monitor student account activity and debts;
- Run circulation reports to retrieve student circulation history to resolve conflicts;
- Serve as technical support for Library servers by investigating and identifying problems and resetting servers as needed or submitting work orders if required;
- Serve as technical support for electronic databases with emphasis on facilitating remote access usage;
- Research, order and process interlibrary loans using advanced methodology and multiple international resources.
