San Bruno Public Library - Librarian I/II

Salary: $57,024.00 - $80,484.00 Annually


The Position:
The Librarian I/II provides a wide variety of professional library work, including adult and children’s reference, selection of materials, providing instruction in the use of print and electronic resources, children’s storytimes, adult and children’s programming, school outreach and cataloging services.

Please note: This position will be hired as Librarian I, with eligibility to promote to Librarian II after performing as a top-step Librarian I for one year with exemplary performance.

The Division:
The San Bruno Public Library, a division within the Community Services Department, has served the City in its present location since 1954, offering a tradition of small town service with big city dedication to technology. As a member of the Peninsula Library System, a consortium of all public and community college libraries in San Mateo County, the Library participates in system cooperative activities and is fully automated with the Innovative Interfaces Sierra integrated library system, online public access catalog, and public internet access. Library staff serve approximately 22,000 registered borrowers with an annual circulation of 354,000 from a collection of 95,000 physical items and access to over 60,000 ebooks. An integral part of San Bruno, the Library maintains its commitment to the future with a strong link to our local schools and partnership with other agencies.

Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate is a self-starting, independent individual capable of working in a team-oriented environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate techniques and sources used in library work, commitment to accuracy and detail, and possess a strong customer service attitude.

Minimum Qualifications:

Librarian I
-Master of Library Science degree from an American Library Association accredited college or university. No professional experience is required.

Librarian II
-Master of Library Science degree from an American Library Association accredited college or university 
-Two years of increasingly responsible professional experience performing duties similar to a Librarian I

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidates in the Librarian I classification should possess knowledge of principles and practices of professional library work; reference methods, techniques and sources used in library work; public library materials selection standards and policies; computer-based technologies for libraries for both reference and bibliographic applications; internet applications for public libraries; and materials and services available in public libraries. Candidates should be able to assist library users in response to reference and related library questions; establish, maintain, and foster positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; relate to the public in a tactful and effective manner; and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

In addition to the knowledge, skills and abilities for Librarian I, candidates in the Librarian II classification should possess knowledge of operating policies and procedures of the library; policies, procedures, and functions of the library system; principles and practices of supervision and training. Candidates should be able to assist in developing operating policies and procedures related to area of assignment; supervise and train paraprofessional staff; perform all professional library duties independently with minimal supervision; implement and enforce library and city policies and procedures; and handle difficult situations and customers at the Reference Desk, Circulation Desk, and any other parts of the library.

Special Requirements:
Possession of, and ability to maintain, a valid California driver’s license
