Under direction, perform a variety of activities such as acquisition, cataloging, and patron assistance; perform a variety of paraprofessional support duties related to the functions and programs of the libraries. Incumbents may oversee, monitor, and/or direct the work of lower level personnel.

This Library Technician position will focus heavily on customer service, with a preponderance of time spent working directly with the public in both Youth and Adult departments.  A successful applicant must demonstrate an aptitude for working with children.  The Library Technician will perform multiple storytimes each week, provide reference to children as well as adults, represent the library at outreach events, conduct school tours of the library, and assist in partnerships with outside agencies.

At close of recruitment, all applicants meeting minimum qualifications will be sent a brief on-line test via e-mail as a first screening step.  All applicants with passing scores to this initial test will be reviewed again, and those most closely matching position requirements will be invited to oral interviews.
Examples of Essential Duties

  • Provide patrons with information about library resources, materials, and services; maintain an automated, comprehensive, accurate, and current database of information on available library resources.
  • Act as a liaison with cooperative libraries and fill requests from other libraries.
  • Plan, coordinate, and/or conduct special programs such as story hours or reading programs.
  • Perform community outreach programs.
  • Conduct and oversee inventories of books and other library materials.
  • Maintain bibliographies and create book lists; conduct bibliographic searches using a library computer system.
  • Provide patrons with information about library resources, materials, and services; maintain an automated, comprehensive, accurate, and current database of information on available library resources.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers and lower level staff to carry out program goals.
  • Interpret library policy in absence of a Librarian.

  • Check out and check in library materials to patrons.
  • Register patrons, establish eligibility status, and input information into database.
  • Acquire, process, and maintain library materials including basic cataloging.
  • Compile data and prepare summary activity reports including circulation, number of materials added/discarded, materials processed and held, patrons served, and other statistics.
  • Participate in the preparation and maintenance of displays and exhibits.
  • Give group tours to children, parents, and organizations.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include the equivalent of:

Education:
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in library science, English, Liberal Arts or a closely related field from an accredited college.

Experience:
Two (2) years of full-time clerical experience working in a library and/or working with children in a teaching environment.  Library work experience strongly preferred.  Experience working with children strongly preferred.

Substitution:
Additional qualifying library experience can substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis for up to two years.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Experience: 
Four years of professional librarian experience. Supervisory experience in a related area may substitute for up to one year of the professional librarian experience. Public library experience is highly desirable.

Education: 
Equivalent to a Master's degree in Library Science, Library and Information Science, or a related field from an accredited college or university is required.

License:  
May require the possession of a valid California Driver's license and a satisfactory driving record as determined by the City.

Other Requirements:

Job Description and Duties
Under the direction of the Staff Services Manager II, the Staff Services Analyst (SSA) will work collaboratively with OQPA staff and Centers/Offices throughout CDPH to provide subject-focused public health and other health-related reference and literature search services as required by CDPH scientists, physicians, other public health specialists, and staff. Provides technical support and instruction to staff using electronic resources and reference tools.
