Description
The J. Paul Leonard Library at San Francisco State University invites applicants for a tenure-track Senior Assistant or Associate Librarian position to fulfill a combination of responsibilities supporting student success by serving as liaison to all first year experience-related initiatives and undergraduate-focused programs, and coordinating outreach to new/prospective students and campus learning communities beginning summer 2018. The Library seeks individuals with background or experience providing research assistance and group instruction in an academic or research library, creating instructional support materials, using social media, and targeting services to undergraduate students.
Required Qualifications
• ALA-accredited Masters in Library and Information Science or equivalent
• At least one year of professional, post-MLS academic library experience providing library instruction, research assistance and programming for undergraduate students, particularly in their first and second years
• Excellent analytical, communication, proactive problem solving, interpersonal, and project management skills
• Ability to work both independently and as part of collaborative teams with faculty, staff and a culturally diverse campus constituency
• Ability to design, deliver, and assess clear and concise instructional presentations and training workshops; familiarity with instructional design and courseware.
• Evidence of potential to engage in scholarly research and professional development
• Ability to provide in-person and electronic research assistance to library users; may require occasional weeknight or weekend hours.
• Working knowledge of new and emerging technologies and familiarity with their impact on higher education and research.
• Ability to work independently and as a member or leader of a team.
• Ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse campus constituency and demonstrate how they have or will incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in their work within primary assignment, professional achievement and/or service responsibilities.
• Strong service ethic.
Desired Qualifications
• At least two years of professional post-MLS academic library experience, including professional responsibilities for group instruction and research assistance.
• Demonstrated record of outreach and/or programming to undergraduates, especially lower division students
• Experience interfacing with campus units such as Associated Students, Student Life, Residential Life, student organizations, etc.
• Active involvement in professional development activities with a record of scholarly contributions and achievements in the profession.
• Knowledge of the research process and evolving models of scholarly communication, open access, data management, and other trends in information science.
• Ability to adapt to rapid change and to exercise creativity and initiative.
• Experience with web authoring, distance teaching & learning, and use of social media.
Responsibilities
• Serve as the Library’s primary liaison to all first year experience-related initiatives, undergraduate-focused programs and other academic support centers such as tutoring services and Student Life.
• Coordinate the Library's involvement in a campus First Year Experience (FYE), FYE seminar and Metro College Success Program
• Coordinate the Library's involvement in Sneak Preview, Welcome Days, other prospective and new student orientations and activities including New Student Orientation and Registration.
• Coordinate Library programming and serve on campus committees related to first year-related, lower division, and undergraduate instructional support for courses that include library research or other information literacy student learning outcomes
• Create instructional support materials such as screencasts, tutorials, and research guides reflecting information literacy best practices for active learning
• Coordinate the Library’s participation in student learning communities and on campus housing programming such as the Asian American and Pacific Islander Retention and Education (ASPIRE) program
• Serve as the Library’s social media coordinator
• Engage in outreach and serve as the Library’s ambassador to undergraduates, especially students in their first two years.
• Work with campus units such as Student Life or Residential Life and library faculty and staff to provide meaningful, welcoming, fun, and supportive library services and experiences for newer students that foster student engagement and sense of belonging
• Serve as a subject liaison to assigned programs and disciplines, teaching research workshops and supporting student research
