JOB SUMMARY


Under general supervision, responsible for stacks maintenance operations and supervision of 30-40 students in the Operations Unit for the UC Davis Library. Hire, train, and evaluate student assistants for the unit, and assign work, monitor performance, attendance, and provide follow-up training/corrective action/referral.

Act as Lead for stacks maintenance operations at all three UC Davis Library Davis campus locations; Shields Library, Physical Sciences and Engineering Library, and Carlson Health Sciences Library, covering over 2 million volumes in over 150,000 sq. ft. of collection space. Collaborate with Blaisdell Medical Library in Sacramento as needed. Perform complex special projects as needed and play a prominent role in planning and implementing very large collections shifts.

Provide service at the Circulation Desk which includes directing circulation student employees and circulation desk workflows, charging, discharging, recalling, and placing holds on library materials, accepting searches, answering and referring questions, and issuing library cards and privileges.
As a member of the Access Services Department there is an expectation of cross-training in a team setting.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS


Read fine print, varied handwriting, penciled annotations, written instructions, and computer screens.

Print legibly in small spaces.

Stand and/or walk for extended periods of time.

Operate keyboard equipment (computer, typewriter, adding machine) for extended periods of time.

Lift books weighing up to 10 lbs., push loaded book trucks (400-700 lbs.), page and shelve books.

Stoop, bend, kneel and reach shelving from 5" to 82" in vertical height.

Move book shelving (weighing approx. 15 lbs. each).

WORK ENVIRONMENT


The Stacks Maintenance Lead position works primarily at Shields Library in Davis. This position may be required to work at any of the University Library facilities as needed to lead special stacks projects and training. The position serves as a backup for opening libraries on the Davis campus.

QUALIFICATIONS


Required:


Experience training, guiding and reviewing the work of others, and providing clear instructions orally and in writing.

Experience creating and maintaining material to document operational processes and procedures.

Knowledge of the Library of Congress Classification System to place items in correct call number order.

Experience working in stacks maintenance in a library.

Experience establishing and maintaining cooperative relations with a wide variety of staff and patrons.

Experience managing a fluctuating workload under pressure of frequent interruptions and deadlines, and coordinating and prioritizing a wide variety of assignments from various work initiators.

Experience planning and performing stack shifts in a library.

Experience using Microsoft Word and Excel, time clock system software, library databases and email systems.

Experience answering questions and providing service in a busy customer environment.

Preferred:


Experience working in public service.

Experience with document digitization concepts and procedures.
