Position Summary 

Library Systems & Services (LS&S) is seeking a full time, 40 hours per week, Library Associate3-Children’s Services person to oversee the day-to-day functions of the children’s department of the Desert Hot Springs Public Library, part of the Riverside County Library System (RCLS) in Desert Hot Springs, California.  

The Children’s Services will work closely with the Branch Manager, as well as other Library Associates Service positions. The primary responsibility for this role is overseeing services for children, ages 12 and under, including selecting and weeding materials, developing and presenting innovative programs, and promoting those programs and the library through outreach. Responsibilities also include providing reference and computer assistance to patrons, and covering at the circulation desk, if necessary as well as other tasks as assigned. 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.  

  • Coordinates and executes a variety of children's programs and initiatives for the library  
  • Evaluates basic statistical data and prepares basic statistical reports and surveys for the library  
  • Processes, creates and edits bibliographic and item records for the library catalog  
  • Maintains and updates the library social media presence and webpage and may support social media of other branches  
  • Provides reference and computer help to patrons  
  • Serves on committees and at times may serve as the chairperson for committees  
  • May handle opening and closing responsibilities; counting money, completing daily cash reports  
  • Contribute to outreach efforts that may include visiting/contacting other sites or organizations to create or promote programs
  • Be responsible for the collection management process of children's materials  
  • Be a proficient readers advisor  
  • Understand the role of volunteers and their duties, and work closely with them
  • Know and understand the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library. In addition to these freedoms, support client discretion of materials available at your local library(ies).  

Qualifications:

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.

  • H.S. Diploma or GED required, Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Three years library experience preferred with an emphasis on children services
  • One year supervisory experience preferred
  • Proficiency with library systems and databases
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal
  • Multilingual speaking is a plus
  • A high degree of proficiency in MS Office suite including Excel, Word and PowerPoint is desired
  • Excellent customer service skills

Physical Requirements:  

Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.

Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
