Kern Community College District is soliciting applications for part-time, hourly adjunct instructors.  The starting salary range is $60.00/hour; Hourly rate may vary based on type of assignment and the Lecture Hour Equivalent (LHE) formula. Representative Duties


This is for an adjunct pool that will be used to staff assignments at the Bakersfield Community College Main Campus, Delano, BC SW, and Arvin sites.

The successful applicant will be expected to provide reference service and instruction on the use of print and electronic resources to students, faculty, staff and community; and to conduct library research orientations and workshops when needed. This assignment may include day, evening, or weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications


Master’s in library science, or library and information science; 

OR – The equivalent. Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments in the field may be judged as equal to the stated minimum qualifications for these positions. Class Characteristics

This is a management position that manages the programs, projects, operations, integrated library system (ILS), information technology (IT), collections, technical processing, and services of the Library Department. The position will serve as acting Director of Library Services when the Director is absent or unavailable. The incumbent assists the Director of Library Services in managing the major activities and programs of the Department, including operations of the library and branch services. The incumbent organizes and oversees day-to-day departmental activities and operations for assigned functional areas and assists with planning, development, and administration of departmental policies, procedures, and services. Responsibilities emphasize diverse, specialized, broad-knowledge base, and complex work involving significant accountability and independent decision-making.   • Supervises and leads the selection, implementation, maintenance and review of all library IT systems and cloud-based applications.
  • Responsible for working with the City’s IT Department to ensure PCI Compliance, compliance with the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the Child Online Protection Act (COPA), the Federal E-Rate program, and all network telecommunications security and disaster recovery.
  • Coordinates a variety of business transactions with commercial vendors, publishers, educators, funding sources, service agencies, and other organizations negotiate effectively and ethically on behalf of the library and the City to obtain and maintain contracts with the most favorable terms.
  • Prepares or directs preparation of bid specifications, requests for proposals, contracts and other supporting documentation.  Ensures contracts for various services and projects are properly managed, coordinates acquisition and administration of grants.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Academic Affairs and/or other designated administrator:

Position Summary: This position provides a high level of customer service in order to assist library patrons in using the library’s collections, services, computing resources, and other equipment. This position is responsible for the successful operation of the Cal Maritime Library’s Service Desk and its Circulation and Interlibrary Loan services, which requires successful training, supervision, and scheduling of library student assistants.

Major Responsibilities:

    Staff the library service desk, which includes provision of basic informational assistance, guiding students in basic library research, referral of complex and/or in-depth reference questions, circulation of materials, updating and maintenance of patron data in circulation system, enforcement of all library policies, processing library fines, and ensuring an environment conducive to student learning in the library. Ensure the accurate recording of library service desk statistics, including gate counts and user transactions.

    Evaluate, hire, schedule, train, and oversee library student assistants (LSA) in order to assure a high-level of customer service at the library service desk. Training and oversight of LSAs includes understanding and implementing library policies, service desk procedures, and core library concepts related to collections and technologies.

    Train LSAs to conduct basic library research, answer common questions, and troubleshoot computer and other equipment problems.

    Maintain current LSA online training modules and policy manual.

    Ensure the successful daily operation of Reserves, Interlibrary Lending/Borrowing, and Document Delivery services. When necessary, develop and recommend to the Library Dean new or updated policies, procedures, and/or technologies to improve efficiency, reliability, and quality of Reserves and ILL services; understand and interpret all Reserves and ILL related policies with library users, vendors, and other institutions; streamline workflow when possible to achieve increased efficiency, cost-savings, and/or speed of ILL services; record and provide ILL statistics when needed.

    Oversee periodicals receiving; ensure LSAs properly check-in issues; claim and track materials not received.

    Maintain the orderliness of the library, which includes shelving and shifting of books, newspapers, and periodicals. Train LSAs to shelve materials and maintain cleanliness of whiteboards, tables, and general environment. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

    High school education or equivalent certification plus three years of related library experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

    Full proficiency in all technical aspects of work assignments, in particular, Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Circulation, and maintains a thorough knowledge of functional area policies and procedures.

    Knowledge of emerging trends and technologies in libraries, in particular as they relate to ILL, Circulation, and online collections. General knowledge of library collection organization and classification scheme and ability to interpret bibliographic records.

    Ability to interpret library department’s policies and procedures and apply them accurately in performing work functions, as well as the ability to evaluate procedures, and applicable work methods and recommend changes.

    Ability to enforce library policies, in particular policies related to ILL, Circulation, and patron conduct and behavior. Working knowledge of institution’s and library’s policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources.

    Full proficiency in the use of automated library system(s) and subsystem(s) pertaining to functional area. Knowledge of library research methodology and the ability to use it.

    Excellent communication and interpretive skills to be able to assess patron information needs, orient and guide patrons in use of library resources, and assist in resolving patron problems and complaints.

    Ability to effectively provide lead work direction and training to student workers and an understanding of employment and payroll procedures related to student workers.

    Ability to fully utilize standard and non-standard features of various online resources and standard desktop software packages, such as word processing and spreadsheets, to perform technical work and assist patrons.

    Demonstrated troubleshooting, problem-solving, and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems. Demonstrated ability to compile and present information in an organized manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

    Bachelor’s degree Proficiency in use of Ex Libris Alma/Primo library management system Ability to assist in the creation and design of library promotional materials using word processing, presentation, or desktop publishing software.

    Working knowledge of California State University’s, the institution’s and library’s policies and practices associated with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), such as the CSU’s Policy on Disability Support and Accommodations (Executive Order 926) and Accessible Technology Initiative.

SELECTION PROCESS:

POSITION PURPOSE


The Stacks and Space Supervisor ensures that the open physical collections are able to be successfully shared with Santa Clara University students, faculty and staff through daily collection maintenance. They perform specialized duties requiring broad knowledge of general library operations and materials. They continually assess the customer’s experiences of the library’s physical environment and provide recommendations to Library Management for improvements to physical spaces in the Learning Commons. This Supervisor ensures that the library environment is maintained to be accessible and usable by the library’s customers paying particular attention to ADA requirements. The Stacks and Space Supervisor will recruit, train and supervise student workers as needed to assist in the maintenance of the open stacks.

The Stacks and Space Supervisor also staffs the Library Help Desk, providing service to customers and supervising student workers. They will open the library on Saturdays and may be required to work other weekend days or hours as required to cover Access & Delivery Services Staffing requirements.

This position will utilize the library’s collections to provide a physical course reserve service and manage the books required for regular displays. The use of physical collections in this way will promote library resources and services. The Stacks and Space Supervisor will assist with displays and help assess the effectiveness of the displays by monitoring the physical book use.
