POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Mabie Law Library at the University of California, Davis School of Law seeks applicants for the position of Research Law Librarian. Under the supervision of the Law Library Director, a collaborative team of five Research Law Librarians provide in-person and virtual legal reference and instructional services to UC Davis School of Law faculty and students. Librarians also assist with legal research questions from UC Davis community members and members of the public. Librarians contribute to all other aspects of reference department services and programming, from preparing and maintaining online research guides to providing in-person or asynchronous legal research instruction. Areas of concentration may be assigned according to library needs and the librarian’s individual talents and interests. In accordance with School of Law curricular needs, librarians may have the opportunity to develop and teach for-credit legal research courses, such as Advanced Legal Research. We welcome applications from both experienced librarians and those newer to law librarianship.

Responsibilities:

• Provide in-person and virtual reference services for law students, law faculty and other library users;

• Serve as a liaison to individual law faculty and provide complex research assistance in support of their scholarship and teaching;

• Provide one-on-one or classroom-based legal research instruction, and provide topical presentations to student groups, faculty, and other users as needed;

• Contribute suggestions for developing the library’s print and electronic collections;

• Create online research and instructional guides and online tutorials, and contribute other content to the library website;

• Assist with the recommendation, development and adoption of technologies and systems relevant to reference services;

• Contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of reference practices and policies;

• Participate in library marketing, communications, and outreach efforts;

• Provide library tours and orientations for law students and other library users;

• Fully participate as a member of the overall Law Library team in delivering library services, productively collaborating on shared projects, and meeting department goals;

• Participate in opportunities to contribute to the School of Law community, such as by joining committees and volunteering for events;

• Fulfill other duties as assigned.

Initial work hours are on-site, Monday – Friday from 8 am – 5 pm, with several in-person reference desk shifts assigned throughout the week. Following a short probationary period, librarians are eligible for hybrid or other flexible work arrangements subject to supervisor approval and operational needs. Some evening or weekend shifts may be required.

Librarians earn two vacation days per month and one sick day per month, and have access to generous retirement, medical, dental, vision and other benefits. In addition, there are thirteen university holidays. Relocation assistance may be available. The Law Library covers core fees for librarian membership in the Northern California Association of Law Libraries (NOCALL) and the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL), as well as the cost of membership in one AALL Special Interest Section (SIS). The library also provides funding to assist with travel to appropriate professional conferences.

UC professional librarians are academic appointees. This position will be a member of the LX Collective Bargaining Unit represented by the University Council-American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). Candidates for appointment to the UC Librarian series shall have a professional background of competence, knowledge, and experience suitable for appointment. To advance in the series, librarians are evaluated based on professional competence and quality of service within the Library, in addition to at least one or more of the following: professional involvement and contributions outside of the Library, university and public service, or research and other creative activity.

The Mabie Law Library is an integral part of the UC Davis School of Law, and provides services that support the teaching, research, and scholarship of its students and faculty. We also serve members of the UC Davis community, members of the legal community, and the public. The Law Library’s physical spaces and personnel are housed in King Hall on the Davis campus. The Law Library has a collection of over 400,000 volumes and volume equivalents and access to a wide range of electronic databases provided through its library licenses, main campus, and UC-wide license agreements.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• A Juris Doctorate (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school

• A Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science school, current enrollment towards such a degree, or an interest in earning such a degree

• Excellent research skills and knowledge of legal research systems and resources

• Experience providing research services, performing legal research, or providing related support in a library or other professional setting. Relevant experience gained as a student, such as in internships, graduate programs, or research assistantships, will be considered

• Experience or interest in teaching

• Comfort with learning and applying new technologies;

• Strong customer service orientation, organizational skills, and attention to detail

• Ability to independently and effectively manage and prioritize projects and time

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with library colleagues and a diverse range of library users

• Flexibility, creativity, and ability to adapt to change.

Experience working in an academic law library.
