Buena Park Libraries - Library Assistant




EXEMPT: No SHIFT: Varies REPORTS T O: Librarian II or Librarian I SUMMARY:  A para-professional position that is responsible for a broad range of public services. S/he will perform routine library work to specialized reference duties for Adult, Children’s and Young Adult library services.  
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: 1) Presents the image of the Library District to the public by being welcoming, pleasant, courteous, and professional. 2) Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external library users. Furnishes information on library services, activities, facilities, policies and answers reference questions. 3) Describes or demonstrates procedures for searching public access catalogs, electronic resources and print material. 4) Interact s with schools and community groups to provide information about library services. 5) Provide s basic readers advisory information for library customers. 6) Participate s in the acquisition, cataloging, retention, withdrawing or special handling of library materials.  7) Participate s in the compiling of library activity reports and statistics.  8) Assists in the development and implementation of special programs and services. 9) Communicates clearly, effectively and in a professional manner. Follows written and oral instructions.  Utilizes social media technology. 10) Takes advantage of opportunities for continuing education to keep current with best library practices and procedures. 11) May supervise library volunteers. 12) Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and have excellent interpersonal skills. EDUCATION and/or
EXPERIENCE: A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university or equivalent experience. Some experience with general library procedures preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to communicate easily and rapidly with customers in English. Ability to read, analyze and interpret job - related information and professional journals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Fluency in a second language desirable.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to perform basic mathematical computations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have access to an insured vehicle.
COMPUTER/TECHNOLOGY SKILLS: Ability to touch type using a QWERTY keyboard.  Knowledge and use of computer office software and computer - based library applications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to talk and hear at a level where communication occurs easily and rapidly. The employee is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects; twist and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel or crouch. Book carts weighing up to 250 pounds must be pushed or pulled and strength to pick up and carry library supplies up to ten pounds is required. See to perform data entry. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
