The Position

The library faculty and professional staff in the University Library's Gerth Archives & Special Collections Department at California State University Dominguez Hills invite applications for a full-time temporary Digital Collections Archivist position. The position is a two-year term appointment with the possibility of extensions. The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed based on funding. Candidates may need to be available to begin in a position on short notice.

Responsibilities

As a library faculty member in the Gerth Archives & Special Collections Department, the incumbent will work in a highly collaborative manner with other CSUDH Gerth Archives and Library personnel to support digital projects through their entire cycle, including the preparation of digital materials (photographs, text, etc.), the creation of metadata using  CONTENTdm, and generation of outreach materials such as finding aids, libguides, digital exhibitions, and other outreach activities. The Digital Collections Archivist will work to enhance the CSUDH community's access to digital collections by actively working with Archives faculty and staff on events and publicity/social media activities to promote their access and use.

The successful candidate will

Work with the Gerth Archives faculty and professional staff to plan, prioritize, and implement projects to digitize archival materials.

Process, catalog, digitize, and upload digital objects across image, text, audio, and video formats into the CSUDH digital collections.

Supervise student assistants in digitizing materials and participate in the integration of related metadata into systems for storage, discovery, and display according to current industry standards.

Participate in the development, implementation, and assessment of policies and workflows that facilitate the digitization of Gerth Archives materials and the creation of metadata in accordance with emerging standards and best practices.

Oversee the maintenance and ingest of digital objects into CONTENTdm

Engage in outreach to promote holdings and use of primary resources and digital collections for the CSUDH community through public presentations, tours, exhibitions, and other activities.

Collaborate with other Archives personnel and the Information Literacy Coordinator to teach and support primary source literacy instruction within the Information Literacy Program. 

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or an MLS degree, with a concentration in from an ALA-accredited institution or an international equivalent.

Minimum of one year of experience working in an archives or special collections setting.

Experience with the cataloging or archival collections, the creation of digital content, and the use of a digital collection management system (CONTENTdm).

Experience with applying standards for description and preservation of special collections holdings, including MARC, EAD, MARC, MODS, METS, DACS, RDA, and PREMIS.

Strong problem-solving skills and commitment to continuous learning.

Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to carry out complex projects in a rapidly changing environment.

Evidence of a commitment to social justice, diversity, anti-racism, and inclusion in library practice.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with digital content metadata standards, digital repository platforms, and digital preservation tools.

Demonstrated experience in archival appraisal, selection, arrangement and description, reference, and outreach activities. 

Ability to maintain an awareness of current developments, trends, and emerging technologies in archives and special collections, including privacy, confidentiality, and copyright. 

Excellent project management skills. 

Experience supervising full-time or part-time staff or student workers.
