City of Burlingame, San Francisco/Peninsula - Teen/Children's Librarian

The City of Burlingame is seeking a highly energetic full time Teen/Children’s Librarian with a strong public service commitment. Incumbents will provide professional reference services, library service and programming to children and teens, as well as assist patrons in finding materials for recreation and information. The Librarian I classification is an entry-level position; the Library II classification is the experienced, journey-level position requiring a higher level of experience and training.  The Librarian I/II can be filled at either level depending upon qualifications and experience.

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide reference and reader’s advisory to children, teens, parents, and educators at a busy Children’s Desk, which requires extensive knowledge of children’s and teen literature. 
  • Instruct children and teens in the use of electronic reference sources.
  • Plan and conduct programs for children and teens. This may include special programs,  story telling, book talks, and school visits, etc. to encourage reading and listening and use of library materials and facilities.  Special emphasis on middle and high school student population.
  • Oversee several areas of collection development and collection maintenance with an emphasis on teen literature.
  • Coordinate teen volunteer program.
  • Attend meetings and workshops as necessary.
  • Plan and prepare book lists and displays using creative marketing techniques to promote the library’s collections and services with an emphasis on teen literature.
  • Utilize library computer systems and databases.
  • Work with other library departments, City departments, and library systems.

Essential Qualifications

Knowledge of: Effective written and oral communication techniques; active listening skills; effective presentation expertise.

Ability to: Establish rapport with patrons and staff and respond to their requests and comments in an open, objective, and straightforward manner; clearly interpret library policy; tactfully communicate with patrons and staff with differing opinions; mediate difficult situations and suggest appropriate avenues for resolution; maintain a positive flexible attitude; learn the operations, functions, policies and procedures of the Burlingame Public Library, foster teamwork and open communication; maintain thorough knowledge of different literary genres and age-level materials and be knowledgeable about reader’s advisory tools. Incumbents must be able to work shifts that consist of regularly scheduled nights and weekends. 

Skills: Assume responsibility, as assigned, for giving direction, scheduling, and training volunteers and/or other staff; demonstrate creative problem-solving and sound decision-making abilities; recognize and effectively sets priorities in planning and organizing work; effectively supervise and motivate subordinate staff; demonstrate a working knowledge of standard and specialized teen and children’s reference and bibliographic resources, both in print and electronic format; demonstrate working knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System.
