San Francisco - California Academy of Sciences - Head Librarian

POSITION SUMMARY:   
Reporting to the Chief of Science and Sustainability, the Head Librarian is responsible for strategic planning and management of the Academy Library, including its programs, staff and assets. The Head Librarian will participate and assist in Academy-wide programs of outreach and public engagement on issues of scientific research and literacy, and should be familiar with emerging technologies in library service, highly motivated with excellent interpersonal skills, and have the ability to work with a diverse patron group including scientists, visiting scholars, Academy staff, students, and potential donors. The Head Librarian will be responsible for management of library programs, staff, and budgets.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage all library programs and services, including Reference, Collection Development, Technical Services, and Interlibrary Loan
  • Oversee all Library collections, including rare books
  • Coordinate care, custodianship, and conservation of collections
  • Investigate and implement new technologies and tools to enhance library and archives collections and services
  • Serve as main point of contact for the Library's ILS, OCLC WMS and the WorldCat Local OPAC
  • Supervise Academy Library staff
  • Supervise the Archivist and Digital Collections Librarian and work with Archives staff on new and ongoing digitization and access initiatives
  • Manage departmental budget
  • Provide reference, education, and outreach services to Academy staff and outside researchers
  • Oversee acquisition and receipt of purchased library materials and gifts
  • Negotiate contracts for electronic resources and other services
  • Promote the Academy Library internally and through participation in consortia and other national/international projects, including the Biodiversity Heritage Library
  • Participate in Academy content development and initiatives
  • Formulate library policies and procedures, spearhead strategic planning
  • Follow all Academy safety regulations
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or experience:
  • MLS/MLIS degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association required
  • A minimum of 5 years of broad-based and progressively responsible experience in an academic or scientific research library
  • A minimum of 5 years managing library or archives professionals or paraprofessionals
  • Expertise in leveraging existing technologies to broaden the reach of a library
  • Experience developing tools and techniques to reach new audiences in person and online
  • Subject expertise in areas such as biology, ecology or environmental science; degree or training in a life sciences discipline strongly desired
  • Experience working with a broad range of collections, including books, journals, maps, digital media, as well as archival and manuscript collections
  • Experience instructing students and faculty in the use of library resources
  • Experience successfully writing and/or administering government or foundation grants

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Understanding of core library and archives competencies and functions
  • Knowledge of emerging library and archives trends and technologies
  • Experience working with digital collections and digitization initiatives
  • Experience in computer programming, application development, and/or digital library projects a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience and comfort with public speaking
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be a strong leader with a commitment to ongoing staff development
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as a member of a team
  • Facility with typical computing environments, including Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals. Knowledge of French, German, or Latin a plus.
