The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Free Library (MCFL) are announcing a recruitment for the position of Library Assistant I.

CURRENT VACANCIES:  
Library Assistant I vacancies currently exist at the Corte Madera branch (full time - 75 hours biweekly) and at the Fairfax branch (part time - 60 hours biweekly). The list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future vacancies for open, fixed term, full time, or part time positions that that may occur at any MCFL branch while the list remains active. Eligible lists remain active for a minimum of six (6) months.  For this and future opportunities, please indicate your interest in part time, full time and/or extra hire employment on your application.

Position Information
  • Library Assistants are key members of our branch library teams, responsible for extensive patron support and with expertise in circulating library materials.
  • The Library Assistant I position requires the use of circulation systems to enter and retrieve information; locate, charge and discharge library materials; register patrons; process reserves and interlibrary loan requests and collect fines and fees.
  • The Library Assistant I assists patrons in finding information or refers patrons to appropriate staff; explains library policies and services to the public; and instructs customers in the use of library equipment, including online computer terminals. 
  • They also assist with the processing of various materials and provide office support services.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:
  • The ideal Library Assistant I candidate is an enthusiastic, customer-service oriented person who can communicate effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds in a busy and fast-paced public service environment.
  • The ideal candidate stays cool and calm even when called upon to multi-task or deal with challenging patron interactions. 
  • The ideal candidate will have experience working with computers and will be comfortable working with new and evolving forms of technology. 
  • We are looking for Library Assistants who demonstrate great attention to detail; possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both orally and in writing, and have the ability to work individually and/or collaboratively with team members and personnel at all levels of the organization.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities listed in the class specification. Typically, equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of office, retail or library support work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must be willing to work evenings, weekends and at any branch to which assigned.
