Position Description:


The Senior Director of the Library leads the Vanguard University library in fulfilling its mission, vision, goals and outcomes for providing information, study and research needs of each university constituent. The Senior Director of the Library will articulate the strategic vision for the library and serve as an advocate for the Library within the University and the larger community. The Senior Director of the Library will supervise a team of faculty librarians and library staff in their responsibility to provide instruction, reference and library services to the Vanguard community. The Senior Director of the Library will provide leadership for information literacy programs and collaborate with departments to advance educational technology in conjunction with library resources. The Senior Director of the Library reports to the Dean of Teaching and Learning and is a 11-month administrative faculty position at the Associate Professor or Professor rank.

Essential Functions:


  • Provide oversight and support to all areas of the library (staffing, acquisitions, budget supervision, periodicals, cataloging, webpage, databases, archives, systems, instruction, digital initiatives and library technologies, reference, outreach, and collection development).
  • Inspire, lead and foster professional growth and development for the library faculty and staff to ensure continual implementation of effective library services and best practices.
  • Create an environment that facilitates all scholarly activities including teaching, learning, research and project preparation.
  • Communicate internally and externally regarding Vanguard University Library events and activities that advances scholarly presentations, resources and materials.
  • Develop strong relationships with academic leadership and departments, along with students, staff and community constituents to advocate for library programs and build collaborative relationships.
  • Enforce policies and regulations adopted by the Board of Trustees, the offices of the President and Provost, and the Vanguard University Faculty Librarians and Library staff.
  • Collaborate with the Faculty Librarians and Library staff to ensure adequate hours and service for effective operations.
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan to advance the mission and vision of the library in alignment with the vision of Vanguard University to communicate to internal and external constituents.
  • Provide excellent undergraduate and graduate-level collections which represent diverse points of view and support to current and future educational programs.
  • Define, develop and measure outcomes through the Vanguard assessment process for the library that contribute to educational effectiveness and apply findings for purposes of continuous improvement and budget planning and allocation.
  • Provide leadership development and training.
  • Lead library information literacy assessment for WSCUC, internal constituents, and other classes as needed.
  • Serve on university and faculty committees, as well as external library organizations and consortia.
  • As primary budget unit manager, compose departmental plans and requests for annual budget.
  • Lead the library in its identification and implementation of library technologies to further student library services.
  • Head search committees for new library faculty and staff.
  • Conduct yearly staff evaluations and faculty librarian post-tenure reviews as needed.
  • Undertake and complete a comprehensive library program review.
  • Provide constructive conflict resolution and collaborative problem solving.
  • Update library policies and procedural manual and ensure consistent application and enforcement.
  • Compile instruction statistics, write grant proposals, support the accreditation of new and existing programs, and complete federal reports as needed.
  • Carry an evening shift and occasional weekend work as necessary.
  • Provide reference support.
  • Actively participate and contribute to the development of the new library in regards to physical space, collections, staffing, services, technology, and impacts.
  • Participate in the university visioning process and implement steps toward that vision.
  • Support the overall mission of the university and of the library.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Ph.D. or MLIS or MLS from an ALA accredited university required.
  • Extensive experience in an academic library (preferably 5-10 years), and a history of increased responsibilities.
  • Proven expertise with creating, teaching, and evaluating library instruction classes.
  • Proven ability in providing reference and research services.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic team-based environment with multiple interruptions.
  • Ability to lead by example in administration, instruction, and reference.
  • An aptitude for servant-leadership and student-centered orientation.
  • Excellent communication, supervisory, and budget management skills.
  • Experience in and knowledge of several areas of academic librarianship.
  • Membership in American Library Association (ALA) and/or California Academic & Research Libraries (CARL).
  • Understanding of and comfort with library technologies and the ability to implement and assess those technologies.
  • Desire to lead library in meeting its strategic goals and the ability to translate vision into practical reality.
  • Possession of a vibrant Christian faith and commitment to the integration of faith and learning.
  • Understanding and acceptance of Vanguard’s unique faith distinctive.
  • Active participation in library associations and other library scholarship pursuits.
