Librarian, 12-month (Digital Archivist / Special Collections)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree from an American Library Association-accredited program and institution by the date of appointment
  • Minimum of two years’ progressive experience working independently in a research-level Special Collections department, or a minimum of two years’ professional archival or digital records management experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments
  • Demonstrated knowledge of archival theory and practice and technological applications related to archives, special collections, and records management
  • Familiarity with EAD, MODS, METS, XML/XSL and other data structure standards relevant to the archival control of digital collection materials
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices for digital archives and records management
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to fulfill the scholarly and service expectations of a tenure-track position
  • Commitment to and/or expertise in educating and serving a diverse student population

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional graduate degree or certificate in Archival Studies, or an archival emphasis in an MLIS program
  • Experience working collaboratively with college/university faculty, staff, and students
  • Thorough grounding in library instruction pedagogy, including the ability to impart information literacy skills and concepts, to develop effective instructional materials, and to show students how to formulate information-seeking strategies, particularly at the college level
  • Ability to evaluate, select, and review information resources in relation to curricular needs.
  • Ability to provide helpful, efficient service to customers while working as a generalist in a cooperative, general reference environment
  • Proficiency in using and teaching electronic information resources
  • A record of significant involvement in library and/or archivist professional organizations
  • Demonstrated awareness of trends related to digital archives, special collections and institutional repositories

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage the digitization of several archival collections
  • Collaborate with library Technical Services staff and Academic Technology staff to make the digitized collections available via the library’s web portal
  • Provide reference and consultation services to the student, faculty, and visiting scholar patrons of the department; conducting library instruction for classes interpreting and helping students to appreciate the unique and rare resources of the department
  • Assume responsibility for outreach and the marketing of department services to the campus and outside communities
  • Work closely with subject librarians and other members of the University community as appropriate
  • Serve a rotation at the central reference desk approximately 6 hours per week including some nights and weekends
  • Engage in library and university governance and scholarship, including research and publication
  • Oversee the work of staff and student assistants assigned to the department
