YOU'RE INVITED TO APPLY:  The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Free Library (MCFL) are announcing a recruitment for the position of Library Assistant II (Spanish Language Services).




CURRENT VACANCY:  Currently there is one (1) part-time vacancy located at the Novato Branch library.  Part-time hours consist of 37.5 hours per pay period (18.75 hours per week) depending on the needs of the library. The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future vacancies that may occur in this assignment while the list remains active. Eligible lists remain active for a minimum of six (6) months.  For future opportunities, please indicate your interest in part-time, full-time and/or extra hire employment on your application.




MARIN COUNTY FREE LIBRARY: With a mission to engage the community, provide innovative library services and foster lifelong learning, the MCFL serves the unincorporated areas of Marin County, as well as, the cities and towns of Corte Madera, Fairfax, Marin City, Ross, and Novato. Along with a dedicated share of a stable local property tax, the MCFL enjoys broad community support as shown by the recent passage of a supplemental parcel tax by more than 74%. Through the activities of the County’s ten-branch library system, the MCFL offers an expansive collection; digital content; public access computers; free wi-fi; AV and print resources; special programming for children, teens and seniors; literacy programs serving both families and individuals; and study space for students of all ages.




THE POSITION:  The Library Assistant II (Spanish Language Services) assists with the marketing, programming and presentation of outreach efforts to Spanish language communities primarily in and around the Novato area including coordinating events and activities, presenting library programs, and creating Spanish language displays and exhibits. In addition to supporting the programming efforts, the Library Assistant II answers directional, informational and basic reference questions; assists patrons in locating and selecting books and other materials; performs simple bibliographic searches; and assigns and reviews the work of lower level staff and volunteers. Duties will be performed in both English and Spanish.




IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate will have prior experience programming and conducting outreach for Spanish language communities; assigning and reviewing the work of lower level staff and volunteers; and training staff and volunteers in library policies and work procedures. In addition, the ideal candidate will work effectively in both an independent and team environment; be able to apply strong organizational, planning, and problem solving skills in a rapidly changing environment; recognize and respect cultural differences; and be passionate and enthusiastic about public library service and recognize that the library is a place where information transforms lives.




MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities listed in the class specification. Typically, equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of experience assisting patrons in a public or academic library.  College coursework in library sciences may be substituted up to one year of the required experience.




TENTATIVE EXAM SCHEDULE:  The first 50 qualified candidates whose applications are received between 9:00am on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 and 4:00pm on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 will be forwarded for additional testing. Testing may consist of a highly qualified review, supplemental application screening, online assessment, written examination, oral examination, or any combination to determine which candidates’ names will be placed on the eligible list.

BILINGUAL CERTIFICATION:  The successful candidate must demonstrate proficiency in both Spanish and English prior to appointment.  A bilingual proficiency exam will be administered at the time of selection to ensure the candidate possesses the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements of the position.




SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be willing to work evenings, weekends and at any branch as assigned.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE


All completed application documents will be reviewed.  Based on the information provided in these documents, the most qualified applicants will be invited for further examination.  Depending upon the number of applications received, the examination may consist of an application screening, online assessment, written test, practical exam, oral interview or any combination of these.


In compliance with the Immigration Reform Act of 1986, individuals offered employment by Marin County will be required to show the specified documentation as proof of authorization to work in the United States within three days of employment.




APPEALS PROCEDURE


Applicants may appeal a step in the examination or selection process by submitting a written appeal to the Human Resources Director within fourteen calendar days after the notice of results of a testing step has been mailed.  The written statement must include the specific grounds and reasons upon which the complaint is based.
