- Temporary, 1 year, full-time exempt position, benefits eligible (after 6 months); 40 hours/ week; minimum $3,333/month.
- Description:
Librarians
in the Educational Services unit function in a teambased environment to
promote and provide a variety of services to faculty and students.
These services include, but are not limited to, information literacy
instruction, research appointments, on-call reference and research
assistance, and on-campus involvement in courses, meetings, and events.
The Instructional Design & Technology Librarian will focus a
significant portion of time on creating information literacy tutorials,
digital learning objects, and video/web projects.
- Essential functions:
- Instructional Design & Academic Technology (60%)
- Apply
expertise in learning theory, learning outcomes assessment, and
instructional design to create engaging, pedagogically rich, and
high-impact technology-based multimedia learning objects, materials, and
experiences across a broad range of disciplines to support critical
thinking and information literacy learning in face-to-face, blended, and
online environments.
- Collaborate with librarians to create effective lesson plans and assignments.
- Collaborate
with the Educational Services Assessment Librarian to promote
learner-centered and technology-supported evaluation strategies.
- Develop
learning opportunities and materials for librarians and academic
faculty to help improve their instructional effectiveness and promote
the ongoing integration of information literacy into departmental
curricula on topics such as pedagogy, assignment design,
student-centered instruction, learning theory, learning styles, student
learning assessment, and technical training.
- Develop learning
opportunities and materials for library staff to support their work and
expand their use of and comfort with new technologies.
- Monitor
trends and provide leadership and training for planning, designing,
integrating, implementing, and promoting use of current or emerging
software and technologies relevant to information literacy instruction,
scholarship, and research services, e.g., mobile technology, social
media, online instructional tools, and course management systems, as
well as raise awareness in critical related areas such as such as
accessibility and fair use.
- Develop relationships with staff in
academic technology units across the Colleges to further the Library’s
mission to support teaching and research and to involve the Library
appropriately in instructional technology-related Colleges initiatives.
- Provide
vision, strategy, and management of ongoing Library technology-based
learning projects such as visual curriculum mapping as well as
maintenance and updating for Instruction Sevices web pages and
calendaring/communication tools.
- Provide backup support for instructional classrooms in Honnold/Mudd Library as necessary.
Instruction, Reference, & Research (20%)
- Contribute
to the Library’s instruction program by designing and delivering
course-integrated and course-related instruction as well as drop-in
workshops.
- Provide virtual and in-person research assistance by
appointment and by participating in the Honnold/Mudd Library on-call
reference rotation. Some evening and weekend hours required.
Additional Duties (20%)
- To
further the Library’s mission to support the Colleges’ teaching and
research, seek to develop relationships with faculty and administrators,
especially those who work with and/or are responsible for academic
technology.
- Explore trends and innovations in instruction and reference services and consider how they can be applied within the library.
- Participate in outreach efforts to faculty and students.
- Participate in library-wide planning and other activities through service and leadership on teams, committees, task forces, etc.
- Maintain
current awareness of trends in librarianship through participation in
professional organizations, workshops, conferences, staff development
activities, etc.
- Perform related duties and undertake special projects as assigned.
- Skills/Qualifications:
- Required Qualifications:
- MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited program, or equivalent graduate training in instructional design and/or education
- Demonstrated understanding of instructional design principles in an online environment
- Experience creating interactive online learning materials and objects (e.g., online tutorials, surveys, and guides)
- Experience teaching library instruction and/or technology training in an academic environment
- Familiarity with concepts and goals of information literacy
- Knowledge of learning technologies and their applications to instruction in a university environment
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technology tools and skills and a strong desire to share this knowledge with others
- Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects
- Evidence of professional creativity, initiative, and flexibility
- Ability
to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships within
the Library and with faculty and others in The Colleges community
- Customer service orientation and strong commitment to quality public service
- Commitment to academic librarianship
Desirable:
- Additional graduate degree
- Minimum 1-2 years experience working in an academic library environment
- Experience with learning management systems, e.g, Sakai, Moodle, Blackboard
- Experience consulting with instructors and academic support staff related to course and assignment design
- Experience
using web development applications such as Dreamweaver, Flash, Camtasia
and/or Captivate and scripting languages such as JavaScript
- Understanding of web accessibility issues and familiarity with accessibility standards
- Experience
or significant coursework in providing reference service, including a
broad knowledge of both print and online information sources, preferably
related to humanities and social sciences in an academic library
- Demonstrated knowledge of copyright and fair use principles as they relate to online and distance learning
