Salary: $4,156.77 - $5,014.56 Monthly
Under general supervision of the
Library Technical Services Manager, the Library Assistant II performs a wide
variety of technical and clerical library work in the Technical Services
Division. This division is responsible for the purchasing, installation,
maintenance, security and support of the Library’s computers, peripherals,
audio-visual equipment, and telephones as well as related software. The
Division is also responsible for the acquisition, cataloging, and processing of
all library materials.
The Library Assistant II performs a
full range of duties as assigned including those that require the knowledge of
general department policies and procedures. Employees at the Library
Assistant II level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or
unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and
policies of the work unit.
ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS: This is a
specialized assignment with the Burlingame Public Library and incumbents will
be primarily assigned to the Information Technology Services division but may
be required to perform other Library Assistant II functions which may include
but are not limited to the following.
- Respond to and resolve questions and problems from users at all levels in the library; provide technical support, user assistance, and training in a courteous and tactful manner.
- Provides customer service to patrons in library and over the phone and via email, including basic reference advisory service using a variety of search tools.
- May interpret library policies in assigned areas to library staff and public.
- Prepares and maintains library materials for the public by adding new materials to the library's online catalog and modifying and deleting item records.
- Install, configure, upgrade, and repair computer hardware, software, and network equipment including peripherals such as printers, scanners and etc.
- Install, maintain, and troubleshoot shared public use thin-client workstations.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve complex problems with personal computers and workstations, printers, software and related equipment.
- Image and roll out new workstations.
- Respond to emergency requests for computer repair.
- Install, maintain, upgrade, and train on computer and audio/visual equipment in the meeting rooms of the library including the new computer lab and the Lane Room.
- Establishes and maintains accurate records and files.
- Participates in special projects.
- Operates integrated library system.
- Assists in developing procedures.
- Operates standard office equipment.
- Monitors and troubleshoots automated materials handling system and check-out machines.
- Assists in updating signage, printed materials and Web site.
- Participates in meetings, committees, task forces and workshops
- Direct and instruct patrons on self-service options online and in the library.
- May prepare and maintain displays and exhibits.
- Plan and implement special event programs.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education &
Experience: Minimum one
year of experience in a public library in a position comparable of that of
Library Assistant I in the City of Burlingame as well as the equivalent to
completion of the twelfth grade.
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS: (The following are representative
sample of the KAS’s necessary to perform essential duties of the position)
Knowledge of:
- Library terminology.
- Standard library procedures, policies and organization.
- Library materials and resources.
- Integrated library systems and automatic material handling systems.
- Library functions including circulation, reference, administration and technical services.
- Record keeping and filing systems.
- Computers and Microsoft Office.
Ability to:
- Communicate with the public clearly, accurately and concisely, both orally and in writing;
- Perform library clerical work of moderate difficulty.
- Work independently without close supervision or as part of a group or team.
- Provide lead direction to others.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Learn the use of library automation systems automatic materials handling systems, and computer-based technology.
- Provide excellent customer service to the public, citizens, and other City employees.
- Sort or file alphabetically and numerically.
- Maintain records, logs and databases.
- Understand and use Dewey Decimal System.
- Follow written or verbal instructions and procedures.
- Observe safety principles and work in a safe manner.
- Operate a computer and use word processing and spreadsheet software, assisting staff as needed.
- Work irregular hours, shifts and weekends as assigned.

The Selection
Process
All applications will be reviewed for
relevant education, experience, training and other job related
qualifications. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee that
a candidate will be invited to participate in the selection process. The
candidates who best match the needs of the City will be invited to participate
in an oral panel interview process. An eligibility list for this position
will be established from those who pass the oral panel interview with a score
of 70% or higher. The list will remain in effect for at least one year
unless exhausted sooner.
The department will invite the most
qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department
interview. The City Librarian will make the final
appointment. Salaries for new employees are established at the department
level interview. All new hires are required to successfully pass a one
year probationary period.
Prior to appointment, candidates will
be required to:
- successfully complete and pass a fingerprinting and background reviews.
- comply with The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. All new employees are required to provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States at date of hire.
- present an original social security card.
