The University Library
consists of the Peter J. Shields Library, the Carlson Health Sciences Library
and the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library in Davis, and the Blaisdell

Job
Summary:
Under general supervision,
represent the University Library to patrons on evenings, weekends and holidays.
Responsible for interpreting and enforcing unit, department, and library
policy/procedure, and oversees access services related functions. Responsible
for opening/closing and overall building and collection security. Provide and
oversee Public Service Desk including circulation, reserves and basic reference
assistance, and may schedule/direct student assistants. The library is open on
evenings, weekends and most holidays, during which incumbent has charge of the
facility when reference librarians or other library career staff is not
scheduled. Position assists Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Services
(ILL/DDS) during NW shifts; processes requests, including urgent patient-care,
and may direct ILL student assistants. Responsible for tasks in one or more of
Access Services areas: Collection Support, Public Service, and Personnel
Activities.
Physical
Demands:
Read standard and computer
print, handwritten requests, notations and computer screens. Operate keyboard
and read CRT screens for extended periods of time. Operate and troubleshoot
standard office equipment including but not limited to computers, scanners,
photocopiers, and facsimile machines. Lift and pass books weighing up to 15
pounds across a 39" high counter, maneuver loaded book trucks weighing up
to 400 pounds, transport books by elevator, and shelve and retrieve books in
stacks from 5" to 84" high in 32" to 34" wide aisles. Must
be able to work for extended periods of time (up to 2 hours)
shelving/retrieving books in stacks.

Must be available for staff meetings during daytime hours when required and to substitute for other night and weekend staff on short notice. Must be able to work over 50% time during finals and to adjust work schedule to accommodate co-workers' vacation/sick leave. Rotate night, weekend, and holiday hours as necessary.
Position may be required to work at any of the university's campus libraries on an as needed basis: These locations include the Carlson Health Sciences Library (CHSL), Physical Sciences and Engineering Library (PSE) and Shields Library all located at the Davis Campus. No eating in work area. UCDHS ID/badge to be worn at all times when at BML. Frequent interaction with patrons and staff; communicate in person, by telephone, and electronically.

Minimum
Qualifications:
Library operations and
practices work experience in an academic library public service setting, with
Access Services responsibilities (Personnel, Collection Maintenance,
Facilities/Security, and Circulation).
Interpersonal and communication skills to successfully interact with a diverse patron and staff population to effectively explain complex policies; remain calm and exercise tact and compassion when dealing with difficult individuals.
Experience functioning as a work leader; training, directing, evaluating, motivating.
Organizational skills to work independently and follow established processes and priorities; flexibility to manage rapid priority changes and adjust workflow to meet deadlines and back-up co-workers during staffing shortages and heavy workload periods.
Analytical skills to determine solutions while maintaining compliance with established policies/guidelines. Problem resolution and policy exception granting/refusal experience. Experience responding to emergencies and unusual situations, applying good judgment with appropriate incident management and/or referral.
Experience operating automated library systems, catalogs, and other databases necessary for circulation/reserves and DDS/ILL operations.
Bibliographic skills to retrieve and interpret records, verify citations using online and printed resources and determine appropriate tools for bibliographic checking. Creativity in searching and problem solving for obscure material identification and access.
MS Office applications experience including Word, Excel, and Access. Electronic communication experience including email, ftp; web browser experience.
Skills to operate and troubleshoot standard office/library equipment, including computer workstations, photocopiers/printers, microfilm readers, scanners, and fax machines.
Writing skills to compose clear and concise reports, proposals, policies and procedures, instructional material, and correspondence.
