The City of Mission Viejo is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Library Manager. The eligibility list established for this position may be used to fill future full-time, part-time or temporary Library Manager vacancies.   

Currently, there is one (1) full-time vacancy scheduled to work Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Library and Cultural Services Department at the Mission Viejo Library. The schedule/assignment may vary depending on the needs of the City. This is an exempt position in the City’s Supervisory/Administrative group.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties:
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate library programs, services, collections, and automated systems functions and services for the Public Services area which includes Adult, Young Adult and Children;
  • Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for the Public Services area; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems;
  • Assign work activities, projects and programs;
  • Manage and participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities for assigned program; recommend within departmental policy, appropriate service and staffing levels;
  • Develop and standardize procedures and methods to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Library operations;
  • Continuously monitor and evaluate the service delivery methods and procedures and identify opportunities for improvement for presentation to the Director of Library and Cultural Services;
  • Direct the preparation and administration of the Public Services’ Division budget;
  • Provide for the selection, training, professional development and work evaluation of department staff;
  • Authorize discipline as required;
  • Perform the most difficult professional work in rendering reference and advisory service to readers;
  • Administer vendor contracts and coordinate activities between vendors and the Library;
  • Represent the Library in meetings with other public agencies, community groups and the public;
  • Coordinate Library outreach to schools and other organizations;
  • Collect, prepare, assemble and analyze data and reports;
  • Develop and implement programs and events within Public Services area; conduct programs and events for the public;
  • Seek, develop, and manage grants, and other funding projects and opportunities;
  • Provide highly responsible, professional and technical staff assistance to the Director of Library and Cultural Services; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience and Training and License/Certificate:

Equivalent to a Master’s degree in Library Science or closely related field supplemented by five (5) years of library experience including three (3) years supervisory experience.
