DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS


Positions in the Library Technician class series may be assigned a variety of work from those duties listed within the REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES section or a combination of those and other related work functions. Even though the same general level of difficulty and responsibility is found within each position within the same class level, positions in the different areas of assignment are not interchangeable and each position has its own particular qualification requirements even though they are derived from a general minimum qualifications section. Each position within the class series is a separate and distinct classification as defined in Section 88001 of the Education Code of the State of California. The work of each position/class may be further described as follows: Duties involve the application of paraprofessional library skills and knowledge and understanding of the practices and procedures of assigned Library service area(s).

Representative Duties


The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Oversee assigned public service area(s) such as general circulation, reserves, audiovisual, and/or periodical service desk.

2. Perform acquisitions duties including ordering, receiving, and processing materials including books and audiovisual material; search for and place orders for materials; perform bibliographic checks on needed materials; receive and process new and gift materials; process invoices related to materials ordered including to reconcile materials received with invoicing and resolve discrepancies; maintain order files and related information and statistics.

3. Perform a full range of technical processing duties including using computer databases to retrieve and modify a variety of records information; process materials for addition to the collection; link items to catalog record and process for use; make minor repairs to damaged materials.

4. Oversee periodical subscriptions including ordering, checking in, processing, and maintaining of periodical holdings; update periodical listing; weed, shift, and create new labels for periodicals.

5. Perform a variety of duties involved in stacks maintenance; oversee shelving of library materials; perform general shelf maintenance including shelf reading; search for lost items; participate in space planning and shifting of the collection as needed; oversee inventory of assigned collection.

6. Withdraw library materials from catalog records; prepare materials for disposal.

7. Oversee circulation desk activities and provide staffing at the circulation desk; answer circulation phone and refer calls to other departments or units as appropriate; process all notices and billing for unreturned materials; assist patrons at Circulation/Reserve desk using automated circulation system; explain policies to library patrons; answer informational and directional questions.

8. Supervise student assistants working in assigned Library function and service area(s); hire, schedule, train, and evaluate assigned student assistants.

9. Maintain procedures manual and student assistant handbook related to functions and area(s) of assignment.

10. Instruct students in how to use Library equipment including photocopiers, microform reader/printers, and audiovisual equipment; troubleshoot routine problems.

11. Receive and process interlibrary loans requests for books and other materials.

12. Oversee cataloging, processing, and circulation of faculty course reserve materials; correspond with faculty concerning their reserve materials.

13. Access to student information in Banner system to place/remove block for students with overdue items; call students to inform them to return the overdue items.

14. Search of library resources, including reserves, books, periodicals, and audio visual materials in response to requests from students.

15. Maintain a variety of records and files; maintain bookkeeping records and statistics; prepare necessary correspondence and reports; run assigned reports; count, balance and deposit money.

16. Provide staffing at the circulation desk or other library service points as needed.

17. Order and maintain departmental supplies and library equipment.

18. Oversee security of building, during emergencies and as other situations arise, in the evening.

19. Perform Library opening and closing procedures; pick up books from bookdrop; process newspapers; turn computers on/off; prepare cash; clean out machines; lock/unlock all doors.

20. Support overall Library operations and services through projects and other duties as appropriate and assigned.

21. Attend and participate in professional group meetings, conferences, and workshops; maintain awareness of new trends and developments in library science; incorporate new developments as appropriate.

Minimum Education and Experience

THE POSITION

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM  DESCRIPTION


The Library and Information Resources department at Santa Rosa Junior College provides a diverse array of instructional support services district-wide. There are two library facilities: Doyle Library at the Santa Rosa campus and Mahoney Library at the Petaluma campus. Instructional collections include over 200,000 books and e-books, 45 electronic databases and a discovery search interface. All holdings, print or electronic, are available through a shared library services platform and accessible online. The department's program emphasizes instruction in the areas of information competency and effective research methods. There are close to 800 students enrolled in Information Literacy classes per semester, and faculty librarians teach all class sections.

CAMPUS DESCRIPTION


The SRJC Petaluma Campus currently enrolls nearly 6,000 students in credit and non-credit courses.Each semester, approximately 250 course sections in nearly 60 disciplines are offered, including many majors and certificates as well as courses necessary for transfer to UC, CSU, or to complete SRJC's local AA/AS degrees. SRJC has been offering courses in the Petaluma area for over 50 years; in 1995 permanent facilities on the current 40 acre site were completed. In 2008, SRJC tripled the square footage of the campus with an extensive expansion and remodel project. POSITION DESCRIPTION


This position is responsible for a full range of professional duties such as: providing instruction to a diverse community through various means including online and in-person reference services, research appointments, course-integrated instruction sessions, workshops, and Library and Information Resources (LIR) credit courses; serving as a collection development and instruction librarian liaison to departments in assigned subject areas across the curriculum; developing instructional materials using traditional and emerging technology; participating in the management of digital resources and services; working collaboratively with a diverse range of individuals; directing classified staff; and performing additional duties as assigned, including possible night and weekend service.

Definition
 Under general supervision, plans, develops, operates, or leads a work unit of the library, such as circulation, cataloging, materials acquisition, youth services, and automated system; operates and maintains computerized library systems; communicates with library patrons; performs clerical and support functions; and performs other duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics 
 This is a paraprofessional position with some responsibility for the planning and the operation of a work unit of the library.  Incumbents in this classification perform a variety of routine and technical assignments following standard procedures under minimal supervision.  This class is distinguished from the Supervising Library Assistant in that the latter has ongoing responsibilities as a first line supervisor.

Supervision Received
General supervision is provided by a department or section supervisor.

General Library Duties
Assists patrons in person and by telephone by providing information on library policies and services; provides information and responds to ready-reference questions; resolves complaints using tact and good judgment; operates a computerized circulation system to check-in and check-out library materials, monitors delinquent library materials and any associated fees, and places holds on library items for pick up; searches and catalogs library materials utilizing the library automated system; performs tasks using automated system modules and various manual and electronic ordering programs designed by vendors; plans and implements presentations for children, such as crafts and storytelling; maintains bibliographic records of library holdings; tracks encumbrances and expenditures; monitors computer operation and performance; and creates and distributes printed reports and notices.

Computer Applications

Experience: Two years of experience in a library or public service setting which included customer service and computer skills.  Experience providing lead direction or supervision is desirable.

Education:  An Associate degree in library technology or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Training:  Any recent training such as academic courses and certification programs that are relevant to this job classification.

License:  May require the possession of a valid California Driver's license and a satisfactory driving record as determined by the City.

The Library of the University of California, Davis, seeks two dynamic and innovative Collection Strategist librarians to provide leadership for collections in the Life and Health Sciences and Social Sciences/Area Studies, respectively. The Collection Strategies Department leads the University Library in creating and sustaining an environment of evidence-based collections acquisition, management, and review. The Collection Strategists are collaborative and user-focused and work closely with personnel in other Library departments, and with campus faculty, staff, and students in a highly interdisciplinary research community renowned for its academic excellence and global impact. The strategists will operate within a department designed to support the high-quality research collections and academic services on which the entire university community depends.

Under the general supervision of the Head of the Collection Strategies Department, the strategists work across directorate and programmatic lines in a highly interdependent library organization to build and maintain vital collections. The strategists, supported by the Collection Strategies Department Analyst, gather, assess, and analyze qualitative and quantitative data, contribute to the strategic allocation of Library resources for the acquisition and management of collections in traditional and emergent formats, and design interpretive reports to best present and communicate how the Library judiciously develops its collections in an environment of change in scholarly communication and publishing. A key element to the success of the strategists’ work is incorporating University of California-wide and national collections initiatives, shared print programs (such as WEST), and specialized data repositories into the Library’s collections framework.

Position Responsibilities


Under the general supervision of the Head of the Collection Strategies Department, the Collection Strategist develops frameworks and leads the coordination for evidence-based content acquisition, management, and assessment regardless of format or delivery platform. In coordination with Collection Strategies Department personnel, the strategist contributes to budget planning, oversees funding allocations, and manages monographic approval plans. In consultation with other Library and university departments and service units, the strategist designs models that promote and sustain content acquisitions, access, archiving, and preservation, and coordinates the Library’s system-wide planning and consortial resource selection and evaluation, as well as national efforts to acquire shared content. The strategist guides evidence-based collection development and management decision making, and designs assessment strategies and analyze quantitative and qualitative data to inform and substantiate the strategic allocation of the Library’s collections budget, as well as decision processes for the selection and management of content, including print, digital, media, data, and other emergent formats.

The Collection Strategist guides evidence-based processes by developing content acquisition, format choice, location, and assessment strategies; designs methodologies that promote best practices in making informed collection development and management decisions; and conducts regular content use reviews. The strategist coordinates gifts-in-kind activities. The strategist monitors local, system-wide, and vendor-provided reports to identify collection-related trends and patterns. The strategist participates and represents the Library in UC system-wide initiatives or on national level projects.

The strategist participates in professional development activities as appropriate to meet both personal needs as well as departmental goals and objectives, and as an academic appointee engages actively in pertinent ongoing research, scholarship, or creative activity and/or teaching.

Required Qualifications


-A master's degree in library or information sciences from an American Library Association-accredited institution or equivalent

    Under general direction, to provide library hardware and software technical support and systems administration; to act as purchasing agent for the library, procuring all materials, supplies, furniture and equipment; to provide training and support to staff in using various modules of library management software; and to perform related duties as assigned.

    Essential Duties:

    · Purchases materials, supplies, furniture and equipment; shops among vendors and suppliers for price and quality; completes and processes requisitions; generates orders;
    · Receives items ordered, unpacks and inspects, reconciles with shipping documentation; and contacts suppliers to resolve discrepancies;
    · Forwards invoice with approvals to Business Office for payment and confirms payment by auditing a report generated from the accounting system;
    · Maintains files and records of purchases, documentation and vendor information;
    · Tracks purchasing costs against budgeted amounts;
    · Provides technical and user support services for the automated library management system; trains library staff in use of system modules;
    · Administers software modules used for library acquisitions, circulation and cataloging;
    · Acquires books, serials and periodicals for library; downloads bibliographic data from various sources through the cataloging module; and generates claims for missing issues;
    · Operates library systems administration module containing matrix of user information including user rights and security; maintains matrix information;
    · Uses systems administration module to create calendars that determine circulation parameters based on each item's checkout date and due date; maintains a hierarchy grid to arrive at a check out period unique to each type of item depending on category of patron;
    · Coordinates systems maintenance and Library accountability with remote lan server administrators;
    · Runs reports from remote server using UNIX commands; generates routine and customized reports using database programs; and generates basic reports such as overdue notices from module;
    · Installs new computers and peripheral equipment; sets up network properties; and assigns network
    protocols and IP addresses;
    · Installs and maintains hardware and software; routinely updates antivirus software and internet browser; recognizes the need for and installs replacement hardware including disk drives, CD drives, batteries and fans;
    · Establishes and follows a maintenance and replacement schedule for all staff and student computers;
    · Troubleshoots problems and personal computer hardware, software and peripheral equipment;
    · Performs administrative duties such as, preparing cash box for circulation desk, removing coins from
    copiers; counting and depositing cash, and keeping budget records.

    Ideal Candidate


     A working knowledge of all aspects of classified work done in the library, including circulation, customer service, cataloging, routine system maintenance, software used in the library, acquisitions, purchasing, and budget. Experience using Ex Libris Alma and Primo is a plus.

    • An ability to work with faculty, staff, and students in a variety of capacities as a representative ofthe
    library.
    • The ability to provide regular training to other classified library employees and to assist them in the
    development of job-related skills.
    • An understanding of the goals, values, and needs of community college libraries and to provide a
    leading role among classified staff in support of those goals, values and needs.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 


    Knowledge of: Principles of accounting or bookkeeping. Personal Computer hardware operations. Computer applications and networking including printing, TCP/IP Telnet and FTP.     The Department


    The University Library is a dynamic and innovative partner in the Sonoma State University community. Students are at the core of what we do, and we leverage technology and creativity to promote discovery of and access to collections, to help students learn to use information effectively, and to encourage lifelong learning. We teach students to seek out appropriate information sources, to evaluate information, and to be critical consumers and producers of information in an increasingly digital age. We collaborate with instructional faculty on teaching and learning in the classroom, develop and implement information literacy curriculum, and assess our work in order to make data-driven decisions.     Job Duties


    The Sonoma State University Library seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and innovative librarian to join our team. This new tenure-track position will provide leadership and direct the creation, implementation, and assessment of online learning services and programs that support the Library in research services, instruction, and outreach, as well as University goals for student success. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with units in the Library and on campus to build, position, and assess digital learning by creating effective solutions that address the information needs of Sonoma State's diverse community.     Job Summary

    Representative Duties

    1. Oversee assigned public service area(s) such as general circulation, reserves, audiovisual, and/or periodical service desk.
