APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Continuous Who Should Apply:
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications as stated on this bulletin may apply for and take this examination. All applicants must meet the education and/or experience requirements as stated on this examination announcement. Once you have taken this examination, you may not retake it for twelve (12) months.
How To Apply:
Please read the following information in the section carefully. Candidates are required to submit the following three (3) items:
1. Examination/Employment Application (STD 687)
2. Training and Experience Examination
3. Proof of Education The Examination/Employment Application (STD 678) and Training and Experience
Examination must be submitted by the cut-off date. Applications emailed, postmarked, personally delivered, or received via interoffice mail after the cut-off date will be held until the following cut-off date.
APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY:
Emailed applications are preferred. Submit your Examination/Employment Application (STD 678) via email at exams@library.ca.gov. Please include Exam Code 2LIAA in the subject line of your email. Emailed applications must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on the cut-off date. When submitting your application, Social Security Numbers must not be included; however, please include your CalCareer Identification Number (ID). You are assigned a CalCareer ID when you create an account on the CalCareers website. If you do not have a CalCareer ID, please select the Create a CalCareer's Account link: CalCareers. If you already have a CalCareer ID, but are unsure of where to locate the number, log into your CalCareer account (select the link above). The ID number will be located under the CalCareer Account section. Additionally, the Training and Experience Examination must be completed and submitted separately through Microsoft Forms. Links to connect to the Training and Experience Examination and the STD 678 are located further down on this bulletin in the “Taking the Exam” Section. The California State Library does not accept resumes in lieu of the STD 678. Please send the required documents listed above for your examination to be process in a timely manner. Incomplete submissions may cause your examination to be delayed or disqualified. Applications must include “to” and “from” dates (month/day/year), job title, time base, and duties performed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
All applicants must meet the education and/or experience requirements as stated on this exam bulletin to be accepted into the examination. Part-time or full-time jobs, regardless of whether paid or volunteer positions, and inside or outside California state service will count toward experience.
LIBRARIAN
Equivalent to graduation from a college or university and completion of a graduate degree from an accredited library school. (For the Librarian class only, registration as a graduate student in a library school will admit applicants to the examination, but evidence of completion of the required graduate degree must be submitted before an applicant can be considered eligible for appointment.)
PROOF OF EDUCATION
Applicants using education to meet the minimum requirements must provide a copy of their diploma, official/unofficial transcript, statement and/or evaluation from an accredited U.S. college or university with their examination application. If an applicant is Bulletin Release Date: 2/7/2022 not able to provide proof of education from a recognized institution at the time of hire, their name may be removed from the eligible list(s).
FOREIGN DEGREES
Applicants with foreign transcripts must provide an official/unofficial foreign transcript evaluation that indicates the number of units to which his/her/their foreign course work is equivalent. California State Library accepts foreign transcript evaluations that are completed by one of the agencies approved by the California Commission on Teachers Credentialing. Agencies accredited by the Commission for Foreign Transcription Evaluation may be found on the Commission's website: www.ctc.ca.gov. NOTE: All documents submitted become the property of the California State Library. Do not submit original diplomas with the examination application.
POSITION DESCRIPTION LIBRARIAN
This is the entry and full professional level in the series. Incumbents may either (1) perform professional work to collect, acquire, catalogue and classify, provide reference to, circulate, develop, use computerized databases for, and preserve library material; or (2) have full responsibility for a small-to medium-size departmental library of average complexity. Positions exist throughout the state.
EXAMINATION SCOPE
This examination consists solely of a Training and Experience Examination-- Weighted 100% This examination will consist solely of a Training and Experience Examination must attain an overall minimum score of 70% in order to be placed on the eligible list. In addition to evaluation application’s relative knowledge, skills, and ability, as demonstrated by quality and breathe of education and/or experience, emphasis in each exam component will be measured competitively, relative job demands, each applicant’s: Knowledge of: 1. Standard practices of professional library and information sciences to perform required library duties. 5. Library technology (e.g., computers, software/hardware, automated circulation systems, etc.) used in professional library and information sciences to perform required library duties. Skill to: 1. Consult with patrons to meet research needs 2. Effectively manage time and tasks to complete assignments 3. Obtain and organize materials requested by patrons to ensure the integrity and validity of data. 4. Maintain confidential information to ensure confidentiality of customer information in the library. 5. Interact/communicate professional and courteously with all staff within the library community in order to promote library services. 6. Organize library materials in order to effectively retrieve requested information for all staff and library patrons. 7. Communicate information and ideas in writing to accurately communicate Library objectives. 8. Analyze resources to accurately answer research questions. 9. Work effectively in a team environment in order to promote equal access for all staff and library patrons. 10.Multitask and/or adapt to changing priorities and environments in order to effectively perform the duties of the job. Ability to: 1. Work collaboratively with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds to maintain positive and productive relationships with patrons, staff, and the public to ensure cooperation. 2. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with library users, coworkers, supervisors, and others contacted during the course of work to provide customer service to a diverse population of library users 9. Think critically to identify alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
ELIGIBLE LIST INFORMATION
An open eligible list for the Librarian classification will be established for the California State Library. The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list in order of final score regardless of exam date. Eligibility expires 12 months after it is established unless the needs of the service and/or conditions of the list warrant a change in this period. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility. Veterans’ Preference will be granted for this examination. In accordance with Government Codes 18973.1 and 18973.5, whenever any veteran, or widow or widower of a veteran achieves a passing score on an open examination, he or she shall be ranked in the top rank of the resulting eligible list. Veterans’ status is verified by the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR). Information on this program and the Veterans’ Preference Application (STD Form 1093) is available online. Additional information on veteran benefits is available at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Career Credits will not be added to the final score of this examination.
