Assistant Program Director, Research Advisory Services
Academic Engagement and Learning Services (AELS)

The University of California, San Diego Library seeks creative, collaborative, and service-oriented applicants for the position of Assistant Program Director of Research Advisory Services for our Academic Engagement and Learning Services (AELS) Program (Assistant, Associate or Full Librarian). The APD leads the user-centered design, delivery and assessment of virtual and in-person reference and research consultation services. The position will participate in the development of a new collaborative service model for the three programs in the Library’s Learning and User Experience Division: AELS, Technology and Digital Experience (TDX), and Spaces, Lending and Access (SLA).

Responsibilities of the Position 


The Assistant Program Director (APD) for Research Advisory Services is responsible for developing and facilitating the vision of Research Advisory Services in the Library, in partnership with the AELS Program Director. The APD provides strategic leadership on user-centered service design, technology, and culturally responsive methods and practices.

• Reports directly to the Program Director and has a central role in planning, creating, implementing, and administering program services, policies, and procedures.
• Supervises eight-ten librarians and staff. Responsible for recruiting, training, evaluating, and supporting professional growth and development.
• Serves on the AELS management team, responsible for programmatic visioning and ongoing development of inclusive team culture. The management team develops and prioritizes internal projects and working groups and makes decisions on budgeting, resources, and staffing.
• Provides administrative and operational oversight for Research Advisory Services, including physical and virtual service points and specialized services such as systematic review support.
• Develops and implements strategies for advancing diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility in research advisory services, tools, and content.
• In consultation with the Program Director and service providers, ensures that AELS provides technologies, training and other support for subject librarians responding to user needs.
• Serves as a subject librarian, providing outreach, instruction, research, and collection development services in an assigned subject or discipline area and in collaboration with others.

QUALIFICATIONS


Basic qualifications (required at time of application)


• MLS/MLIS, or equivalent advanced degree or experience.
• Demonstrated experience in a management position at an academic, research, or public library setting. Transferable skills would be acceptable. Leadership or coordinator roles overseeing library services or functions without direct supervision would also be considered.
• Ability to set priorities, make informed decisions, and build team motivation and consensus.
• Experience in providing library public services and demonstrated commitment to developing content and delivery methods that meet the needs of our students, staff, faculty and user communities.
• Demonstrated intercultural competence and ability to provide leadership in ways that advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in Library services and culture.
• Excellent analytical and organizational skills and ability to plan, document, and complete projects.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Commitment to excellence in service and ability to work both independently and collaboratively with faculty, students, staff and colleagues from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Preferred qualifications


• Three or more years of direct management experience in an academic or research library.
• Demonstrated ability to guide professional growth and develop leadership skills of librarians and other library professional staff.
• Professional service or scholarship in learner-centered methods, service design, or other areas related to library research advisory services.
