POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Archives and Digital Collections Librarian, the Archives and Digital Collections Assistant Librarian is responsible for processing archives, manuscripts, and image collections. May supervise one or more volunteers and may work independently on special projects related to the archives and digital collections. This position will handle a variety of tasks with varying deadlines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Process collections under the supervision of the Archives and Digital Collections Librarian, including preservation, arrangement, and description and the development of box lists and finding aids using Archivists' Toolkit.
  • Perform image cataloging for both physical photographs and digital images using Dublin Core and the Library's existing controlled vocabulary.
  • Prepare images for ingest into the Archive's digital asset management system.
  • Digitize photographs, slides, and archival materials using high-resolution flatbed and slide scanners in accordance with established digital library procedures.
  • Provide reference support to the Archives & Digital Collections Librarian through the use of institutional resources.
  • Assist in the paging, use, and secure storage of archival materials in accordance with Library policies.
  • Follows Academy safety regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or equivalent experience:

  • Masters degree in librarianship from a degree program accredited by the American Library Association or a master's degree in archival studies.
  • Previous work experience in an archives or special collections setting highly desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Experience in arrangement, description, and preservation of historical materials, cataloging of images, and creation of finding aids.
  • Knowledge of archival standards and best practices for archival arrangement and description including DACS, EAD, and MPLP.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member in a dynamic environment and on a variety of simultaneous projects.
  • Excellent analytic problem solving and organizational skills with a consistently high degree of accuracy.
  • Familiar with photo editing software such as PhotoShop.
  • Skilled at using MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to deal tactfully with library users and to work effectively with co-workers and volunteers.

Prefered Qualifications:

  • Understanding of researchers and the research process and ability to keep their needs in the forefront of their mind when making processing decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience in digitization and metadata best practices, and experience with databases (such as MySQL) and digital asset management systems (such as Canto Cumulus).

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
