POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the User Services Librarian, the Collection Development Librarian plays a leading role in the selection and acquisition of library resources for the Research Division. This position also supports the User Services Librarian by providing high-level and directional reference assistance to Academy Library patrons and outside researchers, and assisting with education and outreach activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Spearhead collection development activities for the Research Division, including the evaluation and purchase of monographs, journals, and electronic resources.
  • Assist in building and maintenance of Library web pages and resources lists using a Drupal-based content management system.
  • Provide reference services to Academy staff, volunteers, researchers, and outside patrons in person as well as via email, telephone, and online chat.
  • Assist the User Services Librarian in conducting education and outreach activities, such as library orientation sessions, and in creating instructional services, such as online tutorials.
  • Follow all Academy safety regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or equivalent experience

  • Master's degree in librarianship from a degree program accredited by the American Library Association.
  • 2+ years experience working in a museum or academic library, reference and/or collection development experience preferred.
  • Subject expertise in areas such as biology, ecology, or environmental science.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and understanding of core library functions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Attention to detail with a consistently high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively with co-workers and volunteers.
  • Skilled at using MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Familiarity with both Windows- and Mac-based operating systems; Linux experience a plus.
  • Ability to create webpages and online content, using hand coding, WYSIWYG editors, blogging software, etc.
  • Experience with an integrated library system such as ExLibris ALEPH.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals. Knowledge of Latin, French, German, or Spanish a plus.
