DEFINITION
To provide assistance to library patrons to obtain materials and
information; to assist librarians in the organization of library
materials; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to the public
service area.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Division Dean.
EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Provide public services to library patrons at the Circulation Desk, adhering to library policies and procedures.
2. Reshelve library materials.
3. Perform a variety of daily activities for the library; open and
close the library; monitor the library security system; secure book
drops, money trays, and computer terminals.
4. Utilize the library's computer system to charge and discharge
library materials and to access email; to maintain patron accounts;
issue library cards; to update status and patron information.
5. May assist in the maintenance of library collection and identify materials for mending.
6. Perform library cash transactions and collect fines and fees.
7. Operate and maintain audiovisual equipment including video- and
audio- cassette players, CD and laser disc players, copiers, and
computers.
8. Perform various clerical duties and tasks; answer the telephone and
respond to inquiries and requests; direct calls or take messages.
9. Oversee and train student workers or new circulation staff.
10. Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
• Methods and techniques of customer service.
• Operations and services of a library.
• Library terminology.
• Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers.
• Principles and procedures of record keeping.
• English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Ability to:
• Operate a computerized circulation system.
• Respond to requests and inquiries from library users.
• Operate a cash register and make correct change.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to the diverse academic,
socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities
of the College community.
