PERS/PARS CONTRIBUTION: The applicable retirement contribution (PERS/PARS) is
deducted from the listed salary/wage for employee's retirement benefits.

SALARY: $5,184.00 - $7,541.00 Monthly

THE POSITION
Utilizing independent judgment and under supervision of a Library Administrator, this mid-management
classification supervises and manages the operations of the Brand Library and Art Center.
Brand Library and Art Center
The Brand Library and Art Center is comprised of an art and music library, art galleries and a recital hall. The Center encompasses El Miradero, an iconic landmark in the City of Glendale built in 1904 as the home of Leslie Brand and opened as a library in 1956. A 21,000 square foot addition opened in 1969. Brand Library & Art Center beckons visitors from all over Southern California to enjoy library resources, concerts, dance performances, art exhibitions, lectures, community meetings and other special events. El Miradero is listed in the Glendale Register of Historic Places, and is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Center expects to reopen in March of 2014 after a major renovation and historic rehabilitation.
Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assists in supervising and managing the Brand Library and Art Center programs and exhibits in the library, galleries and recital hall that generate regional, state-wide and national attention. Develops long range plans and implements applicable policies and procedures. Directs and advises staff and volunteers on City and Library policies, procedures, customer service issues, budget, programming, and collection management. Participates in the hiring, training, and supervising of new staff and volunteers. Reviews employees' job performance, and effectively recommends appropriate personnel action. Serves as a steward and oversees the maintenance of the Brand Library and Art Center, a cultural and architecturally significant facility. Prepares budget requests and related documentation. Monitors and controls a section budget, and expenditure of library funds, programs, equipment, and other items. Performs advanced professional work in the application of professional library, gallery and recital practices. Analyzes resources and guides the development of specialized collections in art and music. Demonstrates initiative in identifying and recommending improvements to programs, services and work processes. Recommends policy and procedure amendments as needed. Oversees the preparation and presentation of Library programs, activities, and services to the general public. Develops positive working relationships and coordinates activities with other Library sections, City departments, and outside Library systems. Represents the Department in City-wide meetings and makes presentations to other City departments, boards and commissions, and business and community partners. Facilitates coordination of programs and services amongst businesses, support groups, and community partners, and coordinates the planning efforts with staff. Works in partnership with and/or serves as a liaison to businesses, support groups and community partners to enhance library programs and services. Initiates marketing and public relations efforts to promote programs and services. Initiates and pursues fundraising opportunities. Serves as an advisor to the Center’s support group with the goal of increasing membership and enhancing programming. Oversees the execution of marketing, media relations and social media. Performs the more complex and specialized reference and reader’s advisory services to patrons. May assist on art and music reference desk. Provides customer service to other City departments, outside library systems, community organizations, and the general public, and resolves complex issues or disputes. Works with other supervisors on policies regarding patron registration and borrowing services and the shelving of materials. Works with other supervisors on technology support, plans for the incorporation of new technologies to the system, and works with other City departments to provide high-quality technology services to the staff and general public. Communicates service section activities to Library Administrators, Library Community Relations Supervisor, and the Director of Library, Arts & Culture. Maintains current professional knowledge by attending professional meetings and staff conferences, and reading relevant publications. Maintains records, statistics and prepares reports.
Participates in the development of Library short term plans and goals. Conceptualizes, develops and implements new programs and services, including policies and procedures.
May act on behalf of a Library Administrator in his/her absence or as required. Drives on City business depending on the needs of the position. Ensures Department services are provided with the highest customer service and ethical standards. Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner. Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

·         Principles, trends, terminology and practices of modern library work, as well as art program development, administration and facility management.
·         Standard reference materials, library tools, guides and indexes.

Experience
·         Four years professional work which includes the following: two years supervisory experience in the same field and two years of professional experience in art and/or music.
·         Experience working in a library and/or art center with an art and music focus is highly desirable.

Education/Training
·         Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited college or university.
·         College coursework in art and/or music is highly desirable.
