Under direction of the Head of
Special Collections provide basic reference desk services in the Special
Collections Reading Room and the Map Room (as needed) for faculty,
students, staff, and the general public and to reference correspondents
as assigned. Assist in instruction and outreach preparation for classes,
tours, special events, and exhibits by retrieving materials selected by
the staff and preparing information regarding the materials.
Work on special projects as assigned such as providing work for the
reference desk including but not limited to the creation of
bibliographies, collection development bibliographic searching, creating
inventories and housing archival materials into preservation storage
for incoming collections.
THIS LIMITED APPOINTMENT WILL END ON MAY 31, 2015 WITH THE POSSIBILITY
OF EXTENSION BASED ON THE TOTAL NUMBER OF HOURS WORKED. A LIMITED
APPOINTMENT HAS A TOTAL OF 1000 WORK HOURS.
Physical Demands:
Lifting books weighing up to 10 lbs. and boxed material up to 40 lbs.
Able to retrieve and shelve books and boxes from shelves 5 inches to 10
feet height, requiring bending and climbing ladders, and access aisles
that are 36 inches wide.
Able to push loaded book carts and flatbed trucks weighing several hundred lbs.
Work Environment:
Work schedule between Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
No eating and drinking in public areas or areas with collections.

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience working in an academic library reference or public services environment.
Knowledge of academic library functions and procedures.
Knowledge of original research techniques and resources and research skills.
Interpersonal and communication skills to interact successfully, in
person and by telecommunication, with a variety of people including
co-workers and patrons, and provide detailed information and conduct
reference interviews.
Experience understanding and appropriately responding to questions and
identifying situations/questions, which should be referred to others.
Experience using word-processing software (Microsoft Word) and
familiarity with and/or ability to learn database, spreadsheet, desktop
publishing and/or image processing programs (Microsoft Excel, Adobe
Photoshop preferred).
Editing and proofreading skills to produce error-free copy.
Skills to work with details; to make comparisons; and to distinguish differences and inaccuracies.
General office skills to operate various types of equipment, including,
but not limited to, computer terminals, photocopy equipment, scanning
equipment, fax machine, and computer keyboards.
Reasoning skills to extrapolate from one situation to another based on knowledge of policies and procedures.
Skills to operate online circulation systems, online catalogs, and other necessary databases.
Knowledge of Library of Congress or Dewey Decimal classification system.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience or training in Special Collections or Archives.
Knowledge of basic preservation handling and storage of rare books and archival materials in use for the public.
Experience using rare and archival materials and the creation of finding aids.
Experience using a wide range of library resources.
