DESCRIPTION:
Introduction
The County of Yolo is recruiting for one regular, full-time position in the class of Library Assistant I/II at the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch in the Yolo County Library System.  However, the candidate selected for this position may be required to serve at other branches as needed. The candidate selected will be placed at the Library Assistant I or II level depending on their background and experience, and at the discretion of the appointing authority. The salary range for each classification level is as follows:

Library Assistant I:  $2,600.00 - $3,161.00 Monthly
Library Assistant II: $2,897.00 - $3,522.00 Monthly

The ideal candidate for this position will have previous professional or volunteer experience in an urban library setting.  Spanish bilingual candidates are preferred.  The eligible list that is generated as a result of this recruitment will also be utilized to fill other  full-time, part-time, and/or substitute Library Assistant positions in various branches or divisions of the Library as they become available.

Definition
Library Assistant I
Under close supervision, performs a variety of routine and repetitive library clerical work; and performs other related duties as required.

Library Assistant II
Under supervision, performs paraprofessional library clerical tasks involving both circulation and technical services; assists in developing and presenting library programs; assists in the selection, acquisition, cataloging and processing of library materials; performs other related duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics 
Library Assistant IThis is the entry level of the library paraprofessional series. Positions in this class are characterized by the performance of routine clerical duties requiring discretion and judgment in applying procedures and guidelines. Considerable public contact is involved in the explanation of library services and functions.

Library Assistant II
This is the second level of the library paraprofessional series. Incumbents in this class perform work that requires a general knowledge of library functions and services and the ability to apply basic library tools, methods, and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are typical of those performed by the incumbents in these classifications; however, other duties may also be required.
  • Prepares circulation desk for service and checks-out, renews, and checks-in library materials;
  • Explains library’s circulation policies and procedures;
  • Issues library cards;
  • Assists patrons in requesting books, including inter-library loan.
  • Shelves library materials numerically and alphabetically;
  • Files a variety of items alphabetically;
  • Prepares books, newspapers and periodicals for circulation;
  • Explains layout of library;
  • Searches shelves and files for requested and overdue material;
  • Receives, receipts, and deposits monies paid for fines and fees and lost or damaged materials;
  • Performs all phases of circulation, registration, and overdue functions;
  • Performs basic troubleshooting for library computers and equipment;
  • Processes new books and additions to library collection on computer;
  • Prepares and processes routine book orders;
  • Checks in and routes inter-library/inter-branch loan materials;
  • Responds to user complaints as appropriate and refers difficult problems to appropriate staff person;
  • Assists patrons in answering routine informational questions, locating and selecting library materials.
This position may also require the performance of different essential or marginal functions depending upon work locations, assignment or shift.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Library Assistant I

Education: Graduation from high school or possession of G.E.D. certificate.

Library Assistant II
Experience: One (1) year of experience performing tasks and duties comparable to those of a Library Assistant I.

Typing: Accurately type at a speed of twenty-five (25) words per minute.

License
Some positions in this classification may require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.

Knowledge of: basic library tools, methods, and procedures; correct English usage and spelling; Dewey decimal classifications system, Library of Congress subject headings, and library filing rules; library functions and services.

Ability to: organize work assignments; follow written and oral instructions; communicate effectively with a wide variety of people of all ages; perform repetitive and detailed tasks with accuracy; interpret and apply library rules and procedures; learn the library collection and provide routine informational assistance; analyze situations and take appropriate action; exercise judgment; work harmoniously and cooperatively with others; work a flexible and changing schedule, including evenings and weekends; use or quickly learn to use, online circulation systems, online catalog, databases and other computer applications; learn, use and apply library policies and procedures, vocabulary and materials.

Written Examination
All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to the written examination.  This examination may test for, but is not limited to, the essential knowledge and abilities listed in this job announcement.  Qualified applicants will be notified of the exact date, time, and location of the examination to the email address included in the application. All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order.  The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination, in conjunction with any county or veteran’s preference points.
