RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical services
- Provide copy cataloging and draft original cataloging for audiovisual materials, equipment, and web-based electronic resources, using OCLC database and library’s automated system
- Package and label audiovisual materials and equipment appropriately, for optimal circulation procedures
- Recognize errors and assist with improvement of data in the library catalog records
- Effectively use the circulation, cataloging and authority modules of the library’s automation system
- Assist with indexing journal articles
Collections maintenance
- Manage inventory and maintenance of assigned collections (primarily audiovisual and multimedia collections)
- Perform systematic withdrawal of outdated audiovisual and multimedia titles
- Assist with validation of links to electronic materials using library and vendor databases, using a variety of interfaces
- Acknowledge donations of non-print materials, and add selected gifts to the collections
- Assist with displays and promotion of library materials
Interlibrary loan
- Request, receive, process, and deliver physical and electronic materials using Docline and OCLC
- Monitor electronic fund transfer accounts
Public services
- Check materials in and out, collect fines, shelve reserve materials, and perform other tasks at circulation desk
- Provide daily scheduled breaks for circulation manager
- Substitute for circulation manager during planned absences
- Assist with training student assistants
- Demonstrate optimal use of online catalog to patrons
- Provide courteous, efficient service to affiliated library users and visitors
- Listen for patrons’ needs and refer suggestions and questions to librarians
Additional duties
- Maintain files and contribute to improving documentation and training materials associated with responsibilities
- Report task-related statistics and usage statistics for electronic resources to library director as requested
- Provide basic assistance with public access photocopier
- Assist in maintaining the neat appearance of the library
- Maintain awareness of current safety procedures and report incidents appropriately
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE; EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Education, Training and/or Experience
- Library Technician certificate, or equivalent (e.g., two years library experience at paraprofessional level)
- Proficiency in using office productivity software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher; Adobe Acrobat.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics
- Attention to detail a must
- Ability to process physical materials neatly
- Ability to perform accurate data entry
- Excellent clerical, organizational, filing, and file management skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills in interacting with diverse patrons and visitors
- Aptitude for shifting easily between work in technical and public services
- Ability to manage multiple projects, and to actively report progress and recommend solutions to problems
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with operating various office machines (printers, scanners) and their routine maintenance
- Experience in using a library automation system
- Familiarity with editing digital graphics and photos
- Knowledge of basic reference materials and tools in health sciences
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment.
- Requires ability to communicate and exchange verbal and written information clearly and concisely.
- Requires sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; be able to lift 25 lbs., retrieving and placing materials on high shelves and on floor-level shelves; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work performed in a general office environment.
- Hours are generally weekdays, 8:30 a.m.to 5:00 p.m. When substituting for circulation manager during planned absences, work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in order to open the library.
