SALARY  $41.29 - $50.20/hour; $85,883.20 - $104,416.00/year

THE POSITION
Under the general direction of the Deputy County Librarian or a Principal Librarian, assumes staff advisory responsibility for the development and coordination of library service programs.  This position will coordinate branch operational service functions in the following areas as a member of the administrative staff:
  • Circulation Services
  • Sunday Services
  • Services-As-Needed Staff
  • Staff Scheduling
  • Accessibility Services
  • This position works a Sunday - Thursday schedule.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I
Experience:
  • The equivalent of two years' full-time experience as a Librarian II, having developed expertise relevant to the position.


Or II
Experience:
  • The equivalent of 18 months full-time experience as a Librarian III, having developed expertise relevant to the position.


Or III
Experience:
  • The equivalent of one-year full-time experience as a Supervising Librarian I in the Alameda County classified service (non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts), having developed expertise relevant to the position.


Or IV
Education:
  • Possession of a master's degree in Library Science or Public Administration awarded by an accredited college or university,


And
Experience:
  • The equivalent of three years' full-time, responsible professional library experience, having developed specialized knowledge in a particular field or the equivalent of three years’ full-time program experience in a professional environment. Supervisory experience is desirable.


Special Requirements:
  • Incumbents of this class may be assigned to work schedules including weekend and/or evening shifts.
  • In addition to meeting the minimum requirements above, this position requires that applicants possess the equivalent of one year full-time experience, within the last 5 years, either providing or supervising staff providing library circulation services.


NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of librarianship as applied to a public library system.
  • Public library programs and their relationship to community needs.
  • Current standards of library reference and services and familiarity with Adult, Teen and Children’s literature.
  • Library reference and circulation methods, technology, procedures and organization.
  • Principles of supervision and training. 

Ability to:
  • Plan and organize.
  • Analyze and problem solve.
  • Make decisions through weighted judgment.
  • Direct, manage, and centralize coordinated tasks and duties.
  • Lead and direct change.
  • Use interpersonal sensitivity and emotional intelligence.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Conduct workshops.
  • Maintain quality of system services in a specialized area.
